Help a newbie coder out please

Archimage (archimage_a) and I have a crazy idea to design an online game that uses a DOS-based client. Can you offer some insight into what this entails? We're thinking a simple role-playing game using sprites and tiles (like old console games) with some customization (choose a class/race/weaponry etc) and basically (for now at least) a kill-some-monsters-get-some-money-buy-a-sword type gameplay...

What coding language is it possible to do this in, and could you post some tutorials/stuff you find useful (references are always good), and if you know sort of what programs/resources are needed. And if it's possible to do this to run an online game (and where can we get cheap/free server space?).

To show what I mean, a really bad mockup I made of the basic window:

java is your best bet I guess, but you aren't just going to go from knowing nothing about programing to making an MMORPG. You need to have some middle ground and learn first.

Plus I assume an online MMO would be quite difficult to deal with all the code.

Is there a way I can download a demo of flash? I don't want to spend $300 on something I'll only use a bit (but I'm definately buying it once I go to college...)

I think he just means standalone client. Not an actual dos program.

The basics are easy to to create something like what your after would take a decent coder atleast a few months of solid work.

  • Dragon Axe x11
    Berserker Ring x9
    Warrior Ring x8
    Seercull
    Dragon Med
Dragon Boots x4 - all less then 30 kc
    Godsword Shard (bandos)
    Granite Maul x 3

Solo only - doesn't include barrows[/hide][hide=Stats]

Archi wanted something that would work very easily on almost every computer... And I guess all Microsoft comps have a DOS compiler in them.

I know flash wouldn't work in dos, but it'd be easier for me than coding a ton of crap I think.

Flash would definitely not work in DOS, if you didn't know that.

Oh, didn't see the DOS part...

Well, nearly all computers have flash (and java to some extent) too. Flash games are much more common, and I'm sure it'd be easier finding the right resources + tutorials to help you along the way.
