Graphical Updates: Good or Pointless?

Featured Replies

This is slightly off-topic, but if you guys are having trouble playing HD I'd recommend uninstalling any old versions of Java you don't have. Java has a tendency to not delete the old versions when you download a new one :P I used to not be able to play HD but after I did this it started running pretty well!

I don't think runescape is "behind in graphics"

Point me to any other 100% online java based game of a similar scale that looks half as good?

You can't because they don't exsist.

Yes the graphics arent amazing next to say wow, but you can't legimately compare a disc based standard pc cd/dvd game to a pure online java applet. In terms of graphics capabilities runescape has gone above and beyond what java could do, WoW comes nowhere near as close to the limits of pc graphics power.

Finally someone that understands me

Graphics Updates: Good.

Jagex +1 whenever they release one.

Think of it from this point of view; if RuneScape was still in beta & Jagex sent you an image of the old Lumbridge & the new Lumbridge, which would you choose (assuming you had never played before)?

This is just an assumption, but I'm sure most people would choose the current one over the old one, due to it's cleaner look. (Remember, this is if it was in beta & very few people have played it before; meaning you have no good memories of running past grey, brick walls.)

After reading the posts on this thread, most 'veterans' like the old graphics because of the memories & it's nostalgic atmosphere, which is fair enough.

Personally, I love graphic updates. I would rather have a fresh-looking Draynor over Mournings Ends Part III any day. Just because they don't serve any particular purpose (other than being easy on the eyes), doesn't mean it's useless. It still gives the feeling (to me, at least) that the game is progressing by giving each area its' own personality.

i cannot stand the new HP bar update, i much prefer the old ones.... :(

I don't judge a game just on its graphics, but if I'm going to be spending a lot of time on a game I do prefer it to look good.

Mechscape World (the original MechScape fansite)

not pointless but i don't care that much about graphics.

The only thing I don't like is how our avatars were made more cartoony.

I hate change. So any graphical update is bad for me.

I miss when all the dragons were one color, and very, VERY, poorly figured. :\

I still play in low detail, so that way I feel like RuneScape is still... well, RuneScape.

I'm gonna sum up graphical updates in a nut-shell:

1. They make things pretty

2. People like the prettiness and join

3. Their money allows for more and better updates

4. ...

5. PROFIT!!!!

Currently will be using my Oni Tsurugi account to attempt to get 99 on all free skills without spending any gp, just for the sake of doing so.

Internet Meme, these boards are getting more full of them by the day.

But does improving the appeal of the game actually improve it?

RS has been behind in graphics for many years, it never stopped it from becoming one of the top MMORPGs around.

People say, "Runescape, yeah, it's good...it has terrible graphics though." Well, now it doesn't have terrible graphics. So yeah.

Plus, the graphics team and the content team are comprised of different people, so it's not like content is just being sacrificed for graphics. Nothing wrong with making stuff look nicer if it isn't getting in the way of new quests and stuff.

To be honest, people will just move on to another complaint, from what i've seen people who say that the graphics is bad is just the standard, essentially they are too lazy to find out themselves what feature of the game annoys them they just say that it's the graphics.

I know I say this a lot lol, but the graphics are another reason I quit RS. Especially when the dialogue box comes up. I miss the old school looks - now it just reminds me of the Disney Channel.

Same boat as lady_ninane, I too run an old computer (well, I update it but the parts are too hard to find now). but anyway, Its not just to look better, but there setting new records in Java history, they continue to keep pushing using ONLY a Java engine, none of that VALVE/Crysis Engine or Blizzard engines: The most standard engine, and there exeeding in it.

no offense, but if your computer cant handle runescape hd, i think its time to buy a new computer ::'
