Mandatory Sentences

So basically this guy rapes a woman,so badly, he gets sentenced to 50 years, but gets out after ten years.

Then he was convicted to raping another women, and gets out after only 7 months.

Then he kidnapped and raped a girl and held her captive for over 18 years.

Drugdealers get mandatory sentences for their crimes. So if they're sentenced to 10 years, they serve every last day. So do you think that rapists, who if we're honest commit a far worse crime than dealing drugs, should recieve mandatory sentencing for the crimes they're convicted of?

If no other sane person disagrees, why don't we have them? Why did drug dealers get them before rapists and murderers? And why have resolutions presented been defeated?

That's only because drugs being illegal have such a hige price. it's the government that inflates the cost of drugs, and makes them so expensive. Much like alcohola dn tobacco.

If you can't control your use of drugs, then I really don't care.

I'm for the legalization of all drugs and I've never had a drop of alcohol, take a puff of a cigarette, or any recreational drug of any kind.

Penn & Teller did a great BS! show about drugs a few years back. But hey, that's another topic.

Drug dealers create homeless people, prostitues, and - rapists.

So does the lottery, marriages, and a whole lot of other crap the government is absolutely fine with. The amount of double standards they have is disturbing.

Things should only be against the law if they are immoral. The law is to protect the people, not attack them. That being said, rape definitely deserves a much more harsh punishment than using a substance on your own body.

You can't legislate morality, though they have tried with the outlawing of drugs and prostitutes.

I said it in another posts, the only things that should be illegal are things that deprive other people of their rights to life, liberty, and property. Everything else may suck, but that's a part of freedom.

Definately. It annoys me when people commit crimes and end up serving less than their sentace states. It's like their crime is forgotten. I think the only instance in which somebody gets early release is in extreme good behaviour.

i don't know really, i mean just look it at the point of the rapists point of view.

"God I wish this [bleep] would stop scratching me?"

I forgot to point out. Since he's been caught, he's "found Jesus." How in he world did he find MMG? lol

But I hate how people find religion after they've been caught.

There is nothing immoral about consenting sex and using a substance on your own body. And if doing drugs is immoral because there is an increased chance that you will cause harm to others, then driving a motor vehicle should be immoral too.

Yes, that is my definition of what immorality is. For some reason I forgot how arbitrary morality is. Forgive me. It's 1 PM here and I've been up the whole night. #-o Definitely time for bed soon.

Hope it's not with a hooker or else you'll end up sleeping in an 8X10 room with bunk beds and a guy named Jamal.

PS, yes most people would've said "Bubba" but statistcally speaking, it's more like to be a Jamal.

I don't necessarily agree with prostitution myself, but it's none of my business, nor the government's. People have sex for lots of stupid reason. Just because that reason is money shouldn't mean you get punished for it.

Hell, I know a lot of women who use sex for lots of reasons not related to love. My sister only ever give oral sex just so she can not have to cook. Makes him take her out if he wants a little of that. :P

For me, it depends what the sentence is for. Longer sentences for the most serious crimes (rape, murder etc) should have mandatory sentences in my opinion. However, for less serious crimes where shorter sentences are more likely (arbrarilly we'll say sentences < 5 years) there should be flexibility because it gives prisoners an incentive to not cause trouble and to behave in prison. In the case you mention, I would say a mandatory sentence would be applicable (although I couldn't really say how long a sentence would be necessary).

He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart,

and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.

I think every sentence should have a degree of flexibility. Obviously the example you gave is an example of too much of it.

Indeed, I believe that some people do indeed learn their lesson in a fraction of the time that their sentence asks for.

I favor removing mandatory sentences for every crime, drugs especially. Mandatory minimum sentences don't allow for flexibility for discrete details. And as I said in a previous thread, I'm not one for vengeance, so long as they learn. Studies show that people are more apt to change their behavior just by the possibility of a conviction, not the length of the sentence.

A woman can get off of a murder charge by saying she had PMS. If you're not aware, justice has a cruel sense of humor.

I wasn't aware getting married would turn me into a homeless prostitute.
