Well, I want a computer.

Doesn't get much more simple than that, does it? I'm wanting one built, but I have no clue what would be a good setup. Can you guys give me a good (and complete) parts list for a good, long-lasting (won't break or become obsolete for at least a few years) computer? If it helps, just assume that I'm an idiot and know absolutely zero about anything involving this sort of thing. I can follow along if you give explanations of the things, though. Thanks for any help!

So...

That's a dual-core 3.1Ghz AMD processor, 4GB of RAM, a 640GB hard drive, and a very capable graphics card.

The Callisto processor also can be unlocked to run on four cores in some instances.

One thing to consider is a new DirectX 11 graphics card from ATI, or wait for nVidia to release theirs. The difference isn't much, though.

Overall, it's a very good computer with a 22" monitor for $850.

I'm wanting something that's not as steep as the average Alienware computer but can still do pretty damn good as both a gaming and a general purpose computer. I'm probably going to have it built. Does that clarify things for you?

Tyler, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm asking for. Thanks. ^_^

Pretty much, shiny. As long as it could last a few years without breaking or getting obsolete without it destroying my wallet, I'm good.

Laura, with all due respect, this is a "help me build a decent, cheap computer" thread, not a "random computer news" thread. Besides, that's for notebooks only, what sort of notebook (or even most laptops) is truly effective for online game play?

notebook == laptop. You might be thinking of a netbook.

Plenty of notebooks are just fine for gaming. Mine cost me $1100 a year ago and can play any game on all high details 1920x1200 just fine.

laura was just showing you anything you would buy is already obsolete, ember, as you said you wanted something that isn't obsolete and wouldn't be. At the growing rate of computer performances, in 4 months any computer becomes obsolete.

The only thing is that it's not obsolete for you if it does all you want, so as long as you get something that will do all you want for a few years, go for it.

Perhaps it would be most effective to first understand the parallel, as others have pointed out. I was showing you that all hardware manufacturers already have their roads paved and planned. The only future-proofing to be done is to buy a newer CPU, loads of RAM, an SSD, etc, all of which cost an arm and a leg at this point. But even if you were to pay the premium now, prices only get lower from this point on. At this time you face a difficult decision-to buy or wait. If you buy now, you're paying more than it will be worth in a few months time, but if you wait you'll never have a computer. The only sound advice to give is to buy a computer when you need it. But as I was attempting to point out to you earlier with the given link, it is impossible to own a computer that is not obsolete. Hence my post was not "random."

Just because the computer's hardware is not brand new, does not mean it is obsolete. In fact, I would favor an older X58 build over a newer P55 build because the P55 lanes are halved to x8 when running SLI/Crossfire.

Another thing to note is that even though hardware is old, does not mean it will fail to deliver performance in what most people do on a day to day basis. I'm still running a 45nm Quad on LGA775, but it still delivers the performance I need; in fact, more than most people would need. 4.2Ghz goes a long way.

You don't seem to understand what I mean by obsolete. I'm talking about something that simply can't run present-day applications (in this case, video games). There's a difference between that and something being lower-end by comparison to the bleeding edge of technology. Do you get what I'm saying?

You're original statement did not imply that. I was simply trying to point out that a computer bought today may not run the latest video games in two years. Of course a computer that fits your needs today should fit those same needs in two years, but that wasn't what I took out of your statement.

..... Why does everything have to be this complicated, from just a simple statement? Well, besides the fact that people want to be smartasses. I know that things improve at an exponential rate in the computer world. However, they don't do so much that something built with keeping up-to-date in mind won't become obsolete in a matter of months, or even one to two years. Adding all of this extra stuff is, in my opinion, spam. Can you please keep it to a minimum? This isn't a debate topic, this is a "help me build a decent computer" topic. PLEASE keep that in mind.

The rate of hardware changing and the rate of video game technology changing are two separate speeds. Video game requirements haven't changed all that much in years, and looking at the future they aren't going to change much more (next big thing will be CryEngine 3).

Oh yes, I totally deserve to be called a smartass when I'm assuming what you told me to assume; there is nothing complex about it.

I have no idea where you are from, what your budget is (saying not to break your wallet isn't a good feel), or if you have any peripherals, as you've been mum thus far.

MoBo $240

CPU $290Don't even consider an C2D/X2 if you're concerned about lifespan.

GPU $110 or this one at $135

RAM $90

HDD $74 Longer warranty, 5 years vs 3 years on most

PSU $100

DVD/CD Drive $32

OS $105

I'm not going to bother with a case or fans at the moment. I've never bought a CPU by itself before, so I don't know if it includes any thermal adhesive or not (it does include a heat sink and a fan).

Total so far: $1041 USD

9800GTX is pretty outdated now, considering it's just a buffed up 8800GT.

Anyways heres what I can think of for a ~$1200 PC

Intel Core i7-920 $289

ASRock X58 Extreme Mobo $160

GTX 275 $290

OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) x2 $260

Western Digital 1TB $110

Corsair PSU 650w $89

Sony DVD/CD drive $32

Windows 7 64 Bit $105

ANTEX Mid Tower Case $50

TOTAL: $1385

or (if you stick with 1x 6GB ram not 2)

TOTAL: $1255

I would like to say a 5850/70 instead, but the problem is that they're out of stock almost every where lol.
