graphic card booting while watching movies?

Hello,

So the problem is the following. I recently bought a new graphic card (Ati Radeon HD 4350) and noticed the following. When I watch movies, it takes roughly 2 minutes and I get an error message saying "vpu recover has reset your graphics accelerator blablala". It comes basically all the time so watching movies is impossible. This happens with avis and dvds, but Youtube and Messenger's webcams are for example ok. I tried to dug up and heard that one possibility could be overheating. However I opened Speedfan and monitored temperatures: seems like the temperatures won't go past 52c while watching movies. It stays around the same when playing RS too, so I'm tempted to believe there's some software problem behind.

Any suggestions where to start looking from?

Download the latest drivers for your card here and install them.

Reply back if it doesn't fix it.

Erm 52C is pretty hot.

Generally you want (ideally) to be in the 20 - 30 mark, or atleast under 40

Paw_Claw 20C would be extremely hard to get even with water cooling.

52C is perfectly normal if its the video card. Once they start hitting 70+ then you can start to worry.

Are you really sure its 22 degrees c? Consider the fact that water from a tap is about 20 i find it hard to believe.

Yes it's a custom build.

It does run very cold atm, but that as it has 5 case fans on at fullpower (plus gpu fan and psu fan thou they are monitor and change)

I'm waiting on a fan controller atm, but it deffo was running at an average of 22C when not using heavy amounts of gpu or cpu up

22C is insane, but I guess a lot of that is down to cool & quiet or stepspeed and the sheer number of fans.

I'm a bit of a noise freak when it come to my own PC so I'd rather it idle at 30ish and max at 50 then sound like a plane taking off (2 120mm 1200rpm fans is enough). The only thing you can hear when mines one is the occasional HDD noise if I'm moving large files.

I remember having a x1950pro with a slight defect in the stock heatsink (know issue but Sapphire Tech refused to offer a free fix) it would idle at 70 to 80 and it maxed 125 before I swapped the heatsink.

mine is quiet as a mouse.

I picked quiet, but powerful fans.

Installed and tried. Took 3 secs before the screen froze for a while and after that it kept freezing (total screen, not jut the movie player) every few secs for around a min; after that I was finally able to close the program. Didn't exactly see the VPU-recovery error this time, but other symptoms were similar. Starting to believe there's some setting wrong, just don't know which one or where to look from.

if getting the latest drivers doesn't work, send the card back and get an Nvidia card. I've had so many problems with Ati drivers that even if I have a computer with an Ati card in it, it's the last Ati card I take until I hear they start making better drivers.

It's only with movies and it's relatively old model so I assume there's only some setting(s) wrong. Seems like this was the last ATI for me though, I watch all my movies through my computer (don't have a TV) so this is really starting to affect :ugeek:

if its old its probably simply to do with definition levels or newer codecs. Some of the newer popular codecs generate a bit more gpu stress than older ones. Shuldn't be noticeable on most graphics cards, but if as u say its fairly old it may not like em too much.

Something obscure like that no doubt, think ur best bet will be a new graphics card by sounds of it

I thought you said it was new and you had recently bought it, sorry, my bad.

Newly bought by me but an old model, don't really need too powerful graphic (or should I spell that with a C?) cards for the things I do.

On side note... After driver update CCC won't load up anymore. Did some googling and it seems to be more or less common things. Totally perfect, only got loads of school and work for the rest of the week, I definitely will want to play Sherlock Holmes and track down this issue when I'd only need to relax

22C is a load of bollocks.

On topic: I've had the same issue some months ago. Atm i'm using 9.7 (graphics card is 4670) and it works without a problem.

Even tho you shouldn't need to too do this anymore, uninstall the CCC package (control panel, driver etc) and download the latest compatible one for yours. Otherwise you might try an older driver and see what's what.

Deleted all the ATI references, reinstalled the stuff from the CD and voilá, seems like the movies are working properly. Would still need to set few other things but now it's time for bed :P Thx a lot, saved my night!
