help with my first build

Well I want to build a computer over holiday break but i have no idea how

1) Can someone link me to a guide? I know how to insert stuff into PCI slots and how to disassemble a case, but that's about it...

2) I need some sort of a list of parts to use. I do not have a lot of money, but these are some specs that i want:

  •
  • Quad-core processor
  • 4gb DDR2 RAM (i dont care much for ddr3)
  • 300gb hard drive (I know this isnt much for today's standards, but I have lived with 20gb for about 6 years now so thats enough for me)
  • 256/512mb video card
  • I don't need keyboard, mouse, monitor, sound, speakers etc.
  • I also have a case and PSU ready, but they're pretty old, so I don't konw how good the PSU is

Also, I must be able to buy this stuff at a computer store like Milwaukee PC, nothing online please :)

A bit older parts, but the principle is the same.

If you have a friend or a relative that's done it before, bribe him/her with a pizza&beer to come and assist you. It's not rocket science, but it would be a bit easier for a first time.

Parts... Well we need to know your budget.

And you say you don't want nothing online... Then i reccomend going to the store, with your specs and ask them to make a list, they can also build it for you... Costs maybe 30-40$. But since you said you'd like to build it yourself...

Why don't you want to buy online? You can get some really good deals online, and if you're on a small budget, it might work out better for you.

My parents are scared of buying stuff online and i guess they wouldn't trust computer parts to be shipped here properly. I was thinking about $500-600 for everything combined. Haven't had time to check out the PSU yet, but like everything in this house, its probably way outdated

Lol. Your price is way too low for your expected computer, if you're going to be buying it locally (that is). You're going to pay out the [wagon] at a place like best buy and even local stores often are much more expensive than the online (newegg) equivalent.

Thank you very much. That was exactly what I was looking for. I don't need a case, and I can downgrade the RAM to DDR2, so I think i can get pretty close to $600. I might actually get this online, so thanks for the links!

EDIT: I was looking through the website and they have pretty good deals on here + free shipping :)

No you can't change to DDR2. The motherboard is DDR3 only, so you'll need to change it aswell if you want DDR2. And you wouldn't save that many dollars on changing to DDR2, plus DDR3 has the future which you can't say about DDR2.

I'm glad i know that now instead of later

Yeah i guess it would be a good idea to stay with DDR3 anyways

EDIT: I just looked through the specs and it says that the case is ATX but the motherboard is Micro ATX

Does this make a difference?

EDIT2: Here is the list of supported processors for the motherboard:

  • AMD Phenom II X4 Processor
  • AMD Phenom II X3 Processor
  • AMD Phenom II X2 Processor
  • AMD Athlon II X2 Processor

The processor listed is AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus. Does this qualify as AMD Athalon II(last one on the list) or will it not work?

Your case or the one i posted?

The one i posted is compatible with m-atx and atx.

Most cases that are atx compatibe are also m-atx compatible. If you have any papers about your case (product info) it should say there. Or if you got a brand+case name availible you could search the net and see what it says.

Sorry but I am not very knowledgeable about computer cases or many other parts. I was talking about yours.

I prefer Mid-Towers, just because it's not too big, but there's enough room in there to work with without too much excess. ALWAYS check and double check all of your parts to make sure they're compatible with one another. Make sure your motherboard can support your RAM, it's the right socket for your processor. Make sure if you use a sata hard drive to get sata cables, and make sure that your PSU is a high enough wattage to power your components.

Where would these SATA cables come from? The hard drive package? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't put non-SATA cables in there...

Also I asked previously whether my processor would work with the motherboard because of the slight inconsistency. (I'm posting from my phone so I can't copy and paste the lIst right now - look up.

The motherboard normally comes with all the data cables you need, including SATA, IDE and SLI bridges, where applicable (so for example you won't get an IDE cable if your motherboard doesn't have an IDE port). Of course, you can still buy extra SATA cables from virtually any computer shop.

The graphics card went out of stock on newegg, so I have decided to replace with this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130435

BTW my computer store is missing most of this stuff so I will be buying from newegg.

Much better performance than the old (8800) 9800gt.

Edit: I saw you asked about mobo+cpu, yes they are compatible.

Post a message instead of edit your post when asking about something, people usually miss edits (if they aren't the first or last post).

What don't you like about them?

Either one of the two i posted is faster than the 9800gt and the 5750 you posted. And they are about 100$.

I don't really understand what you mean by "i don't like them"... It's not like they are a painting which anyone can see... They are inside your case.

Edit: Apperently the 4850 is out of stock too.

Just take the GTS 250 i posted.

Check out the review. Also I forgot that I wanted DirectX 11.

You can't base your decision on a couple of reviews.

Most people tend to comment on something when it's a negative.

DX11, then i guess your stuck with 5750 for your budget.

New question: I am getting a 500gb hard drive and want to create 2 partitions: one partition will have all the windows 7 files and program files and all that operating system stuff on it. The other partition will ONLY have data and installers/cracks/isos/torrents on it. This way, I can easily restore my computer if I have to reinstall windows.

I am guessing that only 150GB will be required for partition 2 as installers shouldn't be THAT big, and I'm not much into movie editing unless its for school. I may also get into some high end games since my current computer looks a little like 512 mb RAM (32mb of which is shared with integrated graphics) and 1.1ghz cpu and cant run many games at all. The problem is I do not know how large those will show up (they will be on partition 1 unless I get a nocd of command and conquer or something)

HELP! The power supply just went out of stock at newegg, and I need help selecting another one.

My parts are:

  • BIOSTAR TA785G3 AM3 AMD 785G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
  • HIS H575FN1GD Radeon HD 5750
  • AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz Socket AM3
  • Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS
  • Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive

The old PSU was CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX, and I need a replacement that will work. I have no idea what specs to look for on a psu.
