Sixth Sense Techology (Not about the movie)

Featured Replies

Hey

Just wanted to share something I have been following for a while now. Its basically an item that lets you use mesh together the digital world and the physical world.

If you are interested here is more form the creator of Sixth Sense (most of the interesting stuff is in the second half, first half talks about how he started with this idea)

Hunter

Ps: Wasn't too sure if this belonged under technology or here as its mostly about computers in the technology section

The TED videos are pretty cool. I've seen most of them.

Really, I watched the "Sixth sense" thing a while ago, but it's so early in development that it looks like junk. This means that either: a) It is early in development, and the real versions won't be impractical, look stupid, and take forever to load or b ) It will fizzle out and die, because it won't be developed further enough. I'm thinking that option b will happen.

I'm not sure, computers are constantly getting smaller, and I think that within 5 years or so we're going to have near-microscopic computer capable of running something like this.

This sounds like one of those ideas which will be used to control people...or allow people to be idiots more often.

"Yeah, buy this toilet paper, it is the most ecologically friendly toilet paper."

Really? It says it is made of Baby Pandas.

"No no, its just marketting, designed to make rich people not kill real baby Panadas"

I guess that is cool, hey who's that?

"Its a store detective, his Sixth Sense saw you steal that box of ceral."

Damn, is he wearing armour?

"No."

Do you think I could snipe him?

"Yeah, I'll help you"

Yay I <3 you sixth sense

(Between the store detective's sixth sense and the person's sixth sense)

So I just told my guy to snipe your guy

LOLZ I told my guy to knife your guy up

OMG I am putting that on SixthSense Facebook

(Back to the personal display)

"Hey I just saw that he was gonna knife me on Facebook"

Really?

"Yeah, I think I need some more armour"

I know a good store to buy some and they don't have CCTV

"Hell yeah! Steally steally"

Do you ever think we might be dooming humanity?

The balance between the roleplaying world(Which is scary when there are no rules) and the real world will break down...particularly when we create smarter machines...or if we let todays Youth design the technology of tommrow.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

What. The Hell. I uh, I don't think you watched the video. This is basically portable Google with a little bit more, from what I got out of it. None of that stuff used was really as relevant right then as she made it out to be, really, except maybe the flight information. Otherwise, it just seems like a little gimmick that'll fade out or have a very niche market.

Yeah, I listening to the first minute and thought, hey its going to be intelligent, unlike the speaker and paused it while I wrote my post.

But no...basically it is just something pointless and will never catch on...After all you are projecting an image onto someone...and anyone with an ounce of common sense will realise how that can be abused.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Hehe ...oh the opportunities .... but tbh it isn't all that pointless, it will just take some time to catch on.

I can think of a much better technology to invest in...How about the same format but instead of projecting an image onto object why not project the image into your own eye...or better yet put it on a contact lens, that way people don't get blinded by looking into a projector, people don't get arrested for displaying indecent images, buildings won't put up stupid white areas and then charge you to use the white area, items will still have useful information printed on them rather than a silly barcode

I mean come on! Its fairly easy to remember which brand of kitchen towel isn't destroying the rainforest or whatever...most of us manage to do it already...We don't walk into a shop and go 'Oh, I forgot what items I usually buy. I know what I will do, I will spend twenty minutes scanning all the brands of kitchen towel to discover which one I like the most....Now I will buy some catfood, oh there seems to be five hundred brands, I better phone the kids and tell them to make their own way home.'

If it catches on it will be the lowest humanity has sunk since the Iphone was released and basic arithimatic went out the window.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

The day I get a popup ad in my field of vision as opposed to on a screen is the day I turn suicidal.

i thought this was pretty cool, i saw it a while ago, but i like the idea of it with newspapers, or with a blank piece of paper as your "screen"

Wouldn't it be easier to get a blackberry, set your homepage to a news website and then put a projector in your jacket pocket. Then you could just project your homepage onto a piece of paper and volia.

Since that is basically what they are doing anyway you might get sued though.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

What's the point of a projector? What's wrong with a phone screen?

"The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."

siggy3s.jpg

bigger obviously. and a phone screen doesn't project an image where you want so if you want to show something to someone else it's still just a small screen.

also, i have a blackberry, i know of no functionality with any projectors, lol. i did see some other commercial for some phone that you could attach a projector to.

also archimage, the blackberry wouldn't change what you were looking at without physically interacting with the blackberry itself, with the six sense tech being motion sensing tech, you don't have to touch the device, it automatically recognizes the actions you do and things like that. it's the integration of computers into daily life without changing daily life much, you don't have to pick up your phone or go to a laptop or something like that in order to do something, you just make a hand motion instead.

That will be great...You can be reading in a library, have taken the stupid thing off and put it on the table and then get asked to leave because you are projecting random pages because of those finger things(which are actually really good at turning pages).

Or be on the train and blind the person opposite you because you got a message.

Or be walking down a street and suddenly have it start displaying stuff because it got a virus or it saw something in a window or some other thing like that.

Of course the real problem with this that it fails to do what it sets out to do...Since the computer isn't actually intellient it is just acting in a way that it is programmed to act the digital divide will continue to exist...Well unless they standardise everything, which seems unlikely given the existance of die hard fantatics like me, and of couse the fact that we get tired of the same format over time....

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Intresting stuff there. I would not mind owning that at all. Would be amazing in everyday life.

wow. just wow. the thing will have an off button i'm sure. radical idea but if you don't want it broadcasting stuff, TURN IT OFF! omg, amazing idea, right? did you even watch the tedtalk about it? it really doesn't seem like you did, more like you just watched parts of it. i really can't see why you're so against it, once the device gets smaller and less invasive, it would be amazing for real world applications, maybe not necessarily to where for everything, but if you go on a tour or vacation or something, it would make picture taking a lot easier because you just make the hand motion to take the picture, then later on you can organise everything by just looking at a wall and rearranging pictures. it has plenty of use for the real world, it just needs some refining.

Less invasive! Its a projector! It shines a beam of light out of your chest, its fairly noticible.

Turning it off? So this is going to be soo much easier to use...I see a wonderful sunset and take a picture of it...I get home...oh...it was off.

Next day. I see another wonderful sunset, I dig around in my pocket, I get it out, I put it on, I turn it on, I let it start up, I take a picture, I turn it off, I take it off, I put it back in my pocket, I go home and turn it on again, then pinch the file over to my desktop, then I notice that in the middle of the picture there is a lifeguards tower where the camera was positioned.

Now lets look at a real world example...teenagers can't turn off their phones in school incase they get a critically important message from someone...do you really think that this will be any different?

Now lets look at another real world example...Telephone calls, if you are having a conversation with someone and your phone goes off you answer your phone(unless it is really serious, obviously), I know people with Iphones who have it set up to update them when they get a new message on facebook, which they then reply to, while you are talking to them.

I don't think people have the common decency to turn the SS(stupid acronym) off, and so it will become one of those things which now stops the entire conversation as someone gets it out, walks over to wall and puts up their facebook page so they can reply to something.

That is why I am against this because the digital world is always jumping and shouting 'Here, Look, Its MEEEEE!' and people access it, not only access they want to bring it into the physical world, so that every single second of every single day the digital world can scream for attention.

Also, I have watched both of the videos, and to be fair I did watch the second video only last night...It started well and then it make an insane jump from trying to bring the physical world to the digital world to trying to bring the digital world to the physical world and went wildly down hill after that.

I just see a world which is becoming more and more dominated by putting information onto computers and using computers to give us information. A world where hard copies are being systematically wiped out by wave after wave of invention which condenses more and more of our lives into a microchip and internet connection.

It is insidious and inherantly wrong to make life so simple...How long until you can just pull out a single sheet of paper and have your entire life on it...I think, historically, it was called an ID Card.

Seriously, stop using your computer/phone/whatever for a week and see how much of your life is no longer accessible to you.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Why so luddite? Why do you say it's wrong to make life simple? Yes, humans are now dependent on the society they've built and the science they've developed, but I fail to see why it's insidious.

As for the Sixth Sense thing, I fell it's just too early to comment on it. Right now it's too rudimentary and lacks the features to replace existing technologies. Taking pics with your fingers might look cool, but I can't see much of an use, at least for now.

This signature is intentionally left blank.

Finally we are making real progress with augmented reality! However I am waiting for it to all be internal in you. Like Ross said, as soon as it's in my field of view (or even worse, in my mind) I will go suicidal. Still glad to see the progress we are making with it! For now though I'll stick with my iPhone and the apps it has (Nearest Places is one of my fave apps!)

For a real life example of why we shouldn't make things simpler, take evolution.

A virus is the most basic and most successful form of life. Why? Because all it does is consumer and reproduce. Humanity is the most successful form of macro scale life...Why? Because all it does is consume and reproduce. The Digital World will be the most successful form of world...Because all it does is consume time and reproduce ideas...over and over in a vicious cycle, getting larger and larger, destroying the real world because the simplest strategy is to wait for someone or something else to produce something, then steal that and use that to make more of yourselves.

The problems that already exist because of Facebook and its counter parts, the weakening of the English Language because of Txt speak, of MSN speak and of LEET speak. The corruption of relationships via the ease at which it is possible to get in contact with new people. The interrupting nature of the digital world as a whole. As I have said before ignoring a phone call is a rarity. How many of us read emails the moment we get them just because we have the nagging feeling they might be important. It used to be that if you were bored talking to someone you politely put up with them, now you can just fiddle with your phone until they shut up. What about conversations on trains, buses, bus stops even? The MP3 Player has rendered all of these obsolete. The TV has all but rendered the Book obsolete....

And why is this? Why do all of these things occur? Because the digital world demands attention because human beings demand attention... 2 Billion people demanding attention compared to maybe two in the real world. Even supposing your friend group is only 20 online people, those twenty people all demand your attention whenever they do anything online...Compared with that the real world occasionally demands your attention, but it just cannot compete...We risk being subsumed into a digital world which functions only to grow larger, without any product...

I suppose, if nothing else, it is the casual nature of the digital world, which Sixth Sense embodies....

Do you want to fiddle pointlessly with something(as you pointed out those Photos)? Do you want to be working during your break simple because you can?

I can be typing away for a good half an hour and then decide actually I have lost interest in what I was writing about...Writing you try to make it work because you have invested something, you have invested a piece of paper, you have invested ink....Computer you have invested nothing and so you feel nothing when you get rid of it.

PS. Sorry for subjecting you to me rambling, explaining my ideas is like running DOS on a MAC, two completely different system.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

There are still people who can write coherent sentences on the computer, such as you and I. Answering the phone all the time depends on the person. With my family (apart from my dad) most of the calls we receive on our phones are missed calls, my dad only gets them because he owns a small courier company, and people are always calling to arrange for a pickup, to ask why the things are late, or to inquire about where he delivers to. He also needs to answer the calls of his employees as they are always urgent calls. That's just my family too, I rarely call because most of my friends don't answer their phones. People only will check emails constantly out of habit, and you need to fix that habit with everyone you know. Could the fact that people don't have conversations on public transport be a geological thing? I've actually had rather enjoyable conversations with people on the bus as well as train. The rest of these things depend how social you want to be, it's up to the user to decide whether to talk to that person or not.
