Fallout: New Vegas

This is a thread that is more so directed towards Fallout New Vegas, but it would probably be more proper to have it be a general discussion on the series itself, rather than condense it into one game. I would, however, like to keep a general focus on the game because it will be coming out. I may modify this entire thread to make it a general discussion for Fallout if I can, but I need to work first, and thus I'll do it tomorrow [if I can]. Thanks.

[spoiler=Fallout New Vegas Information]]Update (Already :P): Forgot to include these tidbits, which are pretty important! So I'll be quick. First off, the people who made the Bioshock Cinematics and others, AKA Plastic Wax animation, will be/are making the cinematics for this game. Also, the Oblivion modder Oscuro, AKA Jorge "Oscuro" Salgado, who is responsible for creating Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, will be working on this game for bugfixing and balancing.

Update 2: Pc Gamer arrived early for most of us, and fortunately it only contained a concept art photo (and I guess a few screenshots that I don't consider post-worthy, just look for it online if you're itching for screenshots), so the burden of posting screenshots is gone :P Rather than screenshots, there was a crap load of information and I'm happy to say that it sounds A-W-E-S-O-M-E! :D I was a bit lazy and didn't want to type anything direct from the Magazine, and luckily Ausir from the wiki put his up online, so I'm going to post the information via the post at NMA. Enjoy and discuss.

There is an optional hardcore mode, the character needs to drink water, ammo has weight, healing isn't instant etc.

Normal mode is more similar to Fallout 3 gameplay.

The storyline is focused on the New California Republic vs. Caesar's Legion (slavers from the east) vs. New Vegas residents.

You are not a vault dweller but are given a Pip-Boy by someone who is one.

There is a screenshot of a vault suit as well.

There is an assault rifle looking like the M4, as well as a new big gun with a backpack, held like a minigun.

There are special moves for melee weapons in VATS - specifically a move for a golf club called "Fore" which seems to be a groin shot.

The Hoover Dam is in the game and is supplying electricity to the city.

There is a quest to rescue a ghoul from some super mutants. The ghoul can then become your companion

The Geckos are back.

There are both dumb and intelligent super mutants, including the elite Nightkin. On at least one occasion you can convince them to fight amongst themselves.

Some super mutants look similar to the ones in Fallout 3, while others are new. There is e.g. a female super mutant with a 1950s hairstyle who apparently is one of their leaders.

Screenshots include a guy with a beard and straw hat, a ghoul and an NCR Ranger.

The only picture of New Vegas itself is concept art and not a screenshot.

Some location screenshots include a huge model dinosaur advertising a hotel, some satellite dishes, an array of solar panels

A character generation shot showing a "vigour machine" instead of the skill book

NCR base is the McCarran Airport, Caesar's Legion is based in the Vegas Strip, while super mutants are based in a place called Black Mountain.

There is also a town called Fremont and another called Primm. A topless reuve is mentioned as being in the latter. Area 51 also appears.

NCR Ranger armor is similar to a brown combat armor with sleeves, there are concept arts of a Ranger.

Skils have a bigger effect on conversation choices. E.g. someone with a high Explosives skill may be able to have a coversation about explosives where appropriate.

There is a Reputation system in addition to Karma.

First-person action RPG with the same engine as Fallout 3.

Set in the Mojave wastelands. Vegas didn't get many nukes. More intact buildings, as well as desert vegetation. Vegas itself is mostly intact.

Vegas itself is mostly intact

Both karma and reputation are tracked. If I'm reading it right there's separate reputations for each of the settlements, as in 1 and 2.

All dialogue options are shown to all players, regardless of whether you have the stats to succeed or not, though there's no punishment for failure.

Bartering is not just lower prices but negotiating for better rewards.

Weapons also now have knock-back upon death, with shotguns sending people flying.

Followers can be managed through a context-sensitive menu, with orders like "follow", "stay" or "attack".

You're a courier, wounded and left for dead in a shallow grave. A friendly robot, Victor, digs you out, and his doctor owner Mitchell patches you up. You take a "vigour test", which is some sort of electric parlour game. This decides who you are and sets up SPECIAL. You can also take some Rorschach tests, but the mag says this is for fun. The Doc then gives you a Pipboy as he was once a Vault dweller.

"Hoover Dam", and "Helios" (a solar plant, confirmed by the mag to have been built by Poseidon) are fought into and then you can direct the power to wherever you choose. In the case of Helios you can also keep the plant for your self, use the energy to call down a powerful laser, or even try to distribute to all equally, however there is a risk of overloading the reactors.

There is a "reputation system", in which all three factions (NCR, Ceasar's Legion and the locals) will either see you as good or bad toward them individually.

There is a screenshot of three Capital Wasteland mutants running toward the player, who is wielding what *looks* to be a heavy incinerator, but has a TV screen and no flamer fuel tanks. He's also wearing NCR combat armour, which is in gold/mustard colours.

There are two separate screens of supermutants that look to be more local, grey skin, and the two are wearing very different clothes. One is Tabitha, who is hearing a blonde wig and love heart glasses. The mag implies she's "not all there".

On that quest, you rescue Raul, a ghoul who Tabitha kept alive to fix her favourite robot. He appears to be a follower, as the mag says you can give him items, and also commands, such as "stay, follow or attack", and also tell him to switch to melee, in which case he'll mutter "sure, I'll put away my rather effective gun, and switch to this piece of um, metal tubing here".

From what I read, the "all dialog" thing seems to imply there will be failures for skill checks as well as speech checks, though, as the mag states, there is no penalty for failing a skill check. In fact, the mag gives an example: A woman who the player tried a Sneak skill attempt on in conversation failed when convincing her an ambush would help the town be rid of a gang of raiders. She simply says "Good luck with your, uh, ambush"

Quick Update: From Josh Sawyer, the lead developer of Fallout New Vegas:

This is how it works. Each skill-based dialogue option has two different texts: one for high skill (which will result in success) and one for low skill (which will result in failure). If you do not meet the required threshold, you see the latter.

Update 3: I have PC Gamer screens. Enjoy 'em.

Fallout: New Vegas is an upcoming spin-off game that has been in production for some time now. Its being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, who most notably made such games as Neverwinter Nights. What most people don't know, though, is that most of the people who founded Obsidian are the former creators of both of the Original Fallout games, and thus many of the original creators are going to be working on this (From the Fallout Wiki):

Developers

Fallout: New Vegas is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a company founded by Feargus Urquhart and Chris Avellone, two of the makers of Fallout 2 (originally at Black Isle Studios). The entire development team is not yet known, but it is known that the project is led by J.E. Sawyer, one of the lead designers of Van Buren, the canceled Fallout 3 project by Black Isle Studios.

Known developers:

J.E. Sawyer - project director and lead designer

John Gonzalez - lead creative designer

Chris Avellone - senior designer

J.R. Vosovic - senior designer

Scott Everts - designer

Akil Hooper - designer

Eric Fenstermaker - designer

Stephanie Newland - designer

Theresa Treadwell - associate producer

Jason Fader - associate producer

Brian Menze - concept artist

Kevin Manning - character artist

Sean Dunny - environment artist

Shon Stewart - animator

Frank Kowalkowski - lead programmer

Justin Reynard - gameplay programmer

Chris Tencati - gameplay programmer

Fryda Wolff - sound designer

Jorge Salgado

Other people at Obsidian who worked on previous Fallout games include Chris Jones, Chris Parker, and Darren Monahan. At least some of them are likely to be on the New Vegas team.

Bethesda is publishing the game, and announced it in the London Showcase in 2007.

For anymore information regarding the previous games in order to gain an understanding of this trailer, go to the wiki.

The game itself will be using the same engine as Fallout 3 and will use the same combat, however it will have no correlation to Fallout 3. As it seems, New Vegas might have some new features, including a new Pip-Boy (Speculation only) called the Lil' Pip-Boy 3000. However, this is purely speculation on the communities behalf and I cannot say for sure, as the game will be released in Fall 2010, the same release month as Fallout 3.

If you would like to contribute or anything, go here: Bethesda Softworks Forum: Fallout New Vegas General Discussion

As to what I think, the game will probable see the return of a lot of dark humor and the old comedy that the former games had weaved into the story. Perhaps the game will probably have a lot of choices and endings as do the old games, and I'm honestly hoping for a little explanation in the Pseudo-Futuristic and untouched Las Vegas, but knowing Obsidian it will be good. I'm also hoping that this game will actually be good, as opposed to older sequals like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel for the PS2, which most consider not cannon of the series. (Thus calling it Fallout: PoS; not to be confused with Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, which was OKAY in my opinion) Seeing how its a spin-off, I'm a little nervous, as spin-offs of the other Fallout games, like the ones I mentioned, were either okay or just plain wrong.

Anyway, this thread should also be used for speculation purposes and to gain interest. So, have fun, don't flame, be constructive please.

I'm really looking forward to this game. I do have faith in it, as it seems to be a proper RPG rather than a tactical game or a third person action game. One thing that struck me about the trailer is how well-lit New Vegas is. They obviously have some sort of functional power plant. I don't think we've seen a city with this much electricity before, except maybe Vault City. The NCR NPC in the trailer is also surprisingly militaristic looking. My guess for the plot would be some sort of (armed) conflict between the NCR and New Vegas, with NCR trying to annex the city and New Vegas resisting.

Can't say I'm excited for this one since Fallout 3 had some major crash issues. Oh the horror

Like I said,

Also, the Oblivion modder Oscuro, AKA Jorge "Oscuro" Salgado, who is responsible for creating Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, will be working on this game for bugfixing and balancing.

Oscuro really did work out a lot of kinks in Oblivion and even balanced the game. With him on the team, this game will probably have a lot less bugs for sure. Then again, the Gamebryo engine is pretty erratic. But I have total faith in the future patches they will release, as they will most likely be worked on by the Obsidian Developers themselves rather then the other Bethesda employees.

Speculation wise, I like your ideas Necromagus, though the same speculation is arising everywhere, and its quite obvious with the NCR soldier. As for New Vegas, it seems that it will either have some sort of Power Plant or it was never hit by the bombs in the first place (its most likely not the ladder, but the former). What I am more interested in is what they will put in the surrounding wasteland. I really, really, REALLY want to see some desert land, like the classic fallout games, and perhaps some scarce settlements. What I do know is if they decide to include the Hoover Dam, then it should be a dangerous area since its owned by the NCR. Also, if they decide to include things like area 51 for instance, then I hope they make it a little lore friendly and cognitive, in contrast to...Mothership Zeta.

No doubt they will make DLC's...well, actually, thats up for debate, I suppose. I just hope that bring back old Fallout weapons too. Like the Bozar, for instance.

And now, to conclude my post, it seems that information on the game itself will be released in PC Gamer, OXM, and PSM3. I'll probably be picking up the PC Gamer magazine myself so I'll be sure to update the first post with info, however I can't promise screenshots as screens usually aren't legal to rip from a magazine onto a forum. Also, If you want to talk to the devs, just go to the beth forums and they might reply.

And last but not least, it appears that the cowboy in the robot in the trailer is actually Vegas Vic, which was a 1950's billboard cowboy on the way to Las Vegas. Pretty cool references.

Updated first post with PC Gamer information, and all I can say is wow. A lot of information in the trailer is revealed in the magazine, and now everything seems a little more cognitive, especially finding out you are the on buried in the ground at the beginning of the trailer! The best part is thats only a little taste (Area 51 and the Hoover Dam anyone?)

Anyway, enjoy, discuss, etc. Now theres a lot more to discuss, I guess.

Wow, seems pretty intresting.

I quite enjoyed Fallout 3, and this seems to be an much more improved version of that, I'll proably be getting it.

Definately, and it seems Josh Sawyer, the lead dev, told us how skills will work too:

This is how it works. Each skill-based dialogue option has two different texts: one for high skill (which will result in success) and one for low skill (which will result in failure). If you do not meet the required threshold, you see the latter.

I'll put this in the first post as well, as its pretty cool.

  • 4 months later...

Really looking forward to get my hands on this game when it hits the shelves.

I've played fallout 3 many hours, i don't think i've ever played a console game that much.

I've also finished that game a couple of times which is not something i normally do with other games, once finished it dissapears in a dark corner :P

I really loved how you could collect everything, i discvered every location and downloaded all the expansion, i harvested every single item there was even had lots of leftover skillbooks all of my skills were 100 by the time i reached lv 20 because i knew what to do, my special stats were almost all 9's and 10's.

And i never actually used any of my toys, i have like 68 mini nukes stored and my mirv fatman and only used it a couple of times to blow up some cars.

Lots of clothing collected which i didn't use either and every single unique weapon and the normal variant of it which i also never used.

I just used 1 armor set and an assualy rifle, a sniper rifle, some grenades and a plasma rifle XD

I think i'll be playing hardmode from the start or just start with 2 save games at once one on normal and one on hard.

Oh i can't wait :D

I hate to add yet another "I fell in love with fo3 and will be getting this"post but thats basically it. Oh and is there a thread for the older fallouts? Im a tad late to the party but fo1 2 and tactics is in the mail heading to me now. 8-)

Lol.

There is no other thread for the older Fallouts [besides one for 3, which died a little while ago, but AFAIK there is no thread for the older fallouts), but nevertheless I was going to actually make this a Fallout general discussion thread and divide all of the information I can into posts and make an altogether discussion about all of them. Would be a good time.

I have to work a midnight shift tonight, so when I get home 8ish my time, I'll be hitting the sack. Once I wake up I wish to make this into a general thread for Fallout and, of course, put more information of New Vegas and stuff.

I think that you'll love Fallout 1 + 2 by the way, more so 1 at least, Fallout 2 had a little too much references for me but the modifications and other things in Fallout 2 were much more attractive. Those games alone are better than 3 IMHO, but Tactics was a little bit of a stretch for me, but I like it nonetheless. Hope you enjoy them, and I'll also advise you to pay close attention to the dark humor and antagonists and such, because many references are supposed to appear in New Vegas.

Probaly won't get it if I don't get a better PC soon, I have FO3 for it but its pretty laggy so it didn't seem so good.

And I don't want it on 360, going through the menus and such, no thanks.

It looks very similar to Fo3 though, from watching the E3 gameplay demos.

Sorry for a double post, but in fallout 1, at mariposa base, whenever i try to go to the 3rd floor or leave the base the game crashes. is there anything i can do and keep my save file?

Thats weird. Did you just happen to wander into Mariposa, or were you instructed to go there? Did you already save the vault? etc.

If yes, then I would suggest looking for unofficial patches by NMA/modders, and also making sure your game is up-to-date.

Sure thing. I'm not sure if any of these patches will help, but they supposedly do fix a lot of random bugs. Also I'll include a Resolution patch so you can change the game to your computers native resolution.

I don't suggest you both of the bug fixing patches, so back up your 1.2 [Caution: Executable File] and try these ones. The resolution patch can be applied after, but wait to see if you can fix these bugs first. Good luck.
