Similarities between Dungeoneering and everything else

The topic description has the question I want to discuss here - where do they grab their ideas?

I had watched "In the Name of the King" not too long ago, and when I saw Lexicus Runewright.. Well, it's obvious where they got their idea for that from!

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here's a vid I created to show just how close these two personas are!

Warning: If you haven't seen and plan to watch the movie at some point, it has quite huge spoiler in the video, so watch at your own risk!

Another thing is the name of the skill itself: Dungeoneering.

Anyone played D&D? Those of you who haven't, here, a wiki link!

More obvious ones would be Rammernaut which is just the Armadillo similar to one in TzHaar quests and the graphically-similar-to-Chaos-Element Plane Freezer.

So, have you noticed any similarities between the Dungeoneering content and other stuff? Out of RuneScape things would of course be more interesting!

Penny for your thoughts, make me a few quid poorer!

Every idea stems from another, older idea. This is not the 1st time and it will not be the last. The same goes for other companies, MMOs, etc.

Man, Jagex ripping off Uwe Boll? HARSHEST flame i've ever seen on Jagex

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."

Oh god... One of these? Really?

Sigh...

If you want Similarities to other things that Runescape "took" or whatever, here ya go. Select a topic and follow the examples.

The challenge of a mistake is not to avoid it. The challenge of a mistake is dealing with the outcome.

Of course, I'm not saying it's bad or that they shouldn't do that, it's near impossible to create something new without being influenced by your own past, things you've been in contact with and your experiences.

My question and food for discussions is more about where exactly do they get their ideas from. It's just interesting to know what kind of things are our devs influenced by :P

Uwe boll films are horrid, People say he's one of the worst directors of all times. if someone's ripping from him, someone is desperate, lots of characters have the ability to move things.

Runewright is more of a magneto to me.

No I'm pretty sure Uwe Boll invented moving things through the air.

But Christopher Walken moved through air before uwe boll.

This.

And a lot.. ill do that again even, A LOT, of games have similarities or are based off of DnD.

Also, I'm pretty sure that saying "You stole that from D&D" is like saying "You stole dragons from mythology!"

Granted, to a lesser extent, but D&D is so popular that taking stuff from it is more of a reference than stealing. Especially since pretty much every game that ever existed is at least slightly based on the game. MMO's like Runescape and WoW have been literally based on it from the beginning.

You forgot that eye ball creature from Big Trouble Little China... and about 1000 other eye ball creatures that have been around for 100s of years... Anyway my thoughts on this are even if you think you have a completely new and novel idea chances are in the past 2000 years of human creativity someone has already thought something very similar.

Jagex is no shakespeare, but they both borrow better stories than they can themselves compose. It's the telling of a story, and the realization of an idea that reflects in the result, not "who thought of it first". In the latter case, we've all just been born a hundred generations too late...

Nevertheless, it's interesting to find out just what exactly inspires people. Kind of reflects what kind of person you are, wouldn't you say? For example, from this Lexicus Runewright thing I can tell the guy behind the idea either likes pretty crappy movies or likes Statham. :P

The Mahjarrat seem to be based on this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lich_%28Dungeons_%26_Dragons%29

I wouldn't be surprised if the diamonds of Azzanadra were revealed to be Azzanadra's phylacteries which must be destroyed before he can be killed completely outside of the ritual, and that the other Mahjarrat have similar soul jar objects too. The Mahjarrat are pretty much deathless outside of the ritual, but since Palkeera died outside of the ritual and the Chaos Elemental said that more than one Mahjarrat will die this year, there must be another way to kill them (that's destroying the phylacteries).

See also this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koschei

That's interesting because there's Koschei in RuneScape too, and he's probably Kharshai the Mahjarrat.

Koschei cannot be killed by conventional means targeting his body. His soul is hidden separate from his body inside a needle, which is in an egg, which is in a duck, which is in a hare, which is in an iron chest (sometimes the chest is crystal and/or gold), which is buried under a green oak tree, which is on the island of Buyan, in the ocean. As long as his soul is safe, he cannot die. If the chest is dug up and opened, the hare will bolt away. If it is killed, the duck will emerge and try to fly off. Anyone possessing the egg has Koschei in their power. He begins to weaken, becomes sick and immediately loses the use of his magic. If the egg is tossed about, he likewise is flung around against his will. If the egg or needle is broken (in some tales this must be done by specifically breaking it against Koschei's forehead), Koschei will die.

Notice the underlined part: Azzanadra lost his powers when the diamonds were stolen.

And about the story told about in Desert Treasure: it was said that the enemies of Azzanadra put Azzanadra's soul to the diamonds. That's an obvious cover-up story! I think the diamonds were created by Azzanadra himself to become deathless.

And both of those creatures are Heavily based off of the archetypal D&D Monster, the Beholder (and all Beholderkind.)

beholder.jpg

The Beholder is a large floating fleshy creature with a massive eyeball and maw and six eye stalks that it files magic beams and such from. There are many variations of these kind, which the only constant being "Large floating Orb with a big eye and lots of smaller eyes."

Sound familiar?

When you accuse content of being ripped off of other content, you should take the time to guess that they may in fact, simply be based off of the same source.

Or ... people have "invented" floating evil eyeballs all indepently... It's not like it requires this much imagination. I'm pretty sure you can't create any boss monster today, without it looking like a previous one in some obscure game/book/movie/... Everything's been done already. From now on, it's recycling.
