Synesthesia

You all deserve nothing less than a painful death on the stake.

I definitely remember playing a game with my elementary school buddy where we'd keep out eyes sealed shut for half an hour and have fun looking at the light show that creeped out of the darkness. I don't think that's synethesia though.

^ First, wut.

Second no, I'm not sure what that is but it's not synesthesia. You don't need to have your eyes closed to see it, although it eliminates some distractions (I find that I can "see" it best laying in a dark room, with my eyes closed and headphones on, makes it easier to focus).

No, it's more of an "inner feeling", kind of the same way that you know your leg is hurting (As opposed to hurting your leg and thinking your arm is hurt), or when you're hungry.

read me a story dsavi, a story about epic battles, lost loves and ancient lore in the tale of the signature.

'Twas an afternoon in February, and lo and behold! I was bored. I was using Blender to do some strange compositing, and when I went to render it (Using a format that I had never used before), I got this, which, verily, I thought was cool. The screenshots flew and the image was left severely cropped, and I got the signature and avatar you see upon this very day.

That is really strange. I've never seen anything like that in Blender.

Yeah as the video description said it was a codec error, not something I did in Blender.

You don't have to mash down on your eyes to do it. :???:

You can just close your eyes and see the colors, although it helps if you're in a bright room or rub your eyes.

But if you move your fingers around it's trippy.

So I rendered a handful of short sounds and I sampled one. If you can see sound, it would be cool if you could tell me:

1) whether the shapes you're seeing in two or three dimensions

2) the color(s) of the shapes you see

3) How complicated they are (if you can approximate, how many sides to the shapes you're seeing)

4) If they're regular polygons or messed up shapes like the green one here:

490px-Assorted_polygons.svg.png

5) If they happen to be a rectangle, try to draw its proportions.

If you can draw them, it's awesome, but you don't have to. The download link to the zip is beloooow.

This has always been fascinating to me... I love 'weird' and wonderful things. Differences that help to understand more of human interpretation of the World.

It's like how you tune into frequencies of your surroundings. Much like you do a radio.

Everyone can see heat... Just look at a sidewalk on a hot, sunny afternoon. The heat waves cause the image to warp.

I think he means perceiving red when it's hot, and blue when it's cold. If it happens to be those two particular colors, then that makes it very interesting, because there's no reason for the brain to inherently associate those two colors with those two temperatures (it's not even the way it works in nature, the hottest stars are blue). That would mean that the association between color and temperature is learned, not intrinsic.

inb4 this is a useless post because those aren't the right colors or visuals

I actually see cold as whitish/clear. But yea, heat is red. Fun thing dsavi mentioned about hurting yourself; different types of pain look different (seems kind of obvious, but it's neat). Burns are reddish, stinging is clearer and sharp-looking, and muscle pain (like from being punched in the arm) is rounded.

The eyelid thing is supposed to be blood vessels or something, isn't it? Or hallucnations. Meaning ya'll are wack. Not wiggidy wack, just regular type. But whack all the same. I recommend big purple pills.

Edit: trying to answer Harrinator: 2D, color varies based on the sound, (a really high note is usually white, though). Most of the color is set up by the song itself. What I mostly see is not really shapes, but abstract waves and textures. A clean sound has an oftentimes more thin, tubular, and hollow shape whereas a distorted, "warm" sound is really wide and fuzzy looking. So not even polygons at all, really. I've always wanted to draw it, but the thing is that 1, I'm a really bad arrist and couldn't if I tried, and 2, they move.

Here's a little example:

Skip to about 6:25. The wahed parts of that solo, and the sliding part (this whole solo is perhaps my visually favorite piece of music) move around a lot. The wah especially, and not just up and down, but into itself and outwards sideways. I myself certaintly couldn't draw that. An animation could, though, if I could do flash or something. I will say this: that really haunting slidy part is really unique to see, think of 3 long, blue pipes connected in parallel sloping downwards or upwads, depending on if it's going higher or lower. That kind of gives you some insight into it, I hope.

Edit: Oh hold on I have a better way. That section almost looks like stucco. Except for that particular piece, orange. And moving.

Say... if I looked at those four shapes and felt a bit warm for this first, anger towards the second, scared towards the third, and the fouth uhh... I'm not quite sure how to describe it but... some weird feeling towards the fourth....... does that mean I'm synesthesic (sp)?

Wow, that just got a whole lot more interesting if I am... I'm going to check those sounds!

Not sure... I think I'm only half L... If thats possible, like a medium-mild of it. Though I do see lots of colors when I listen to muzak, but not distinctive shapes. Though my hands compulsively try to mimic the notes... I can't stop them L

Also, when EVER I think of a day of the week, or month of the year I get this weird wheel in my head that has all the months/days of the week on it. I NEED to know where I saw it before.

I think those are two different types of synesthesia. We could try something else with you, I'll make a grid of shapes and colors and you'll tell us what you're feeling. Sound good?

Sounds good.

Is that really synesthesia though?

Synesthesia is etymologically "together senses", and you're sensing emotion through sight. So at least in the most basic ways, it is effectively synesthesia. I'm sure you'd find something similar if you sifted through the Wikipedia article.

I used to do that all the time, but then my parents told me to stop because it would warp my eyes or something. Haven't done it since I was seven, haha.

Also, I have something that's kinda like synesthesia, but on a much smaller scale. I associate words, letters and numbers with certain colors (A is red, B is brown, C is blue, D is brown, E is yellow, et cetera), and also associate a direction for these letters and numbers when I conceive them. It also isn't something that I do on purpose. However, I don't mix up any senses, I just have that weird color-location thing with letters and numbers, and the color thing with words. :P

So, basically Earthysun is Jesus's only son.

Also synesthesia.

In one common form of synesthesia, known as grapheme → color synesthesia or color-graphemic synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored,[5][6] while in ordinal linguistic personification, numbers, days of the week and months of the year evoke personalities.[7][8]

That is definitely synesthesia; My "Year map" and "Week map" are also wheels. Yes, the shapes can be hard to describe, but I find that with a little concentration you can get them into something semi-coherent.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry I didn't post this earlier, was busy with the last week of school. I typed this post nearly all out, was on the last audio file, and then I yanked on my mouse too hard (Which was wrapped around my computer power cable, as I discovered) and lost the whole thing. :wall: But I should be able to just listen again and type pretty much what I typed before.

A. is a red, translucent, long rounded rectangle that at higher volumes fills my whole synesthetic vision. That's what sine waves look like by definition really, except they often vary in color.

B. is like A, but all jagged and a bit crooked. It's yellow (But maybe that's because I just ate a banana and can still taste it, synesthesia is influenced very easily).

C. I couldn't really describe C but it wasn't so hard to draw, so I took a shot at it in Inkscape.

synesthesia1.png

(I drew that jagged thing in like 20 seconds but it's close enough)

D. This is pretty hard to describe, but even more difficult to draw so I'll take a shot at describing it. Imagine two rectangles from C; They are bent and stretched into inverse sine waves. They seem to get thinner and thicker, but I think it's because they seem to move farther and nearer to the "camera" sometimes.

E is in a strange format that I can't open, sorry.

F. is a different perspective entirely. It's like looking down a pitch black hallway, with each "sound stream" on either side, going towards the end of the hallway (The left audio channel on the left and the right on the right). They are also quite like C. They waver a bit up and down before cutting off.

G. Like C; however the jagged thing has more amplitude and frequency and is more even. At the top of each wave, though, it seems to reach some sort of "maximum" and is flat. It travels from left to right, and moves quite smoothly and slowly closer and farther from the "camera".

H. I can see that this is something that was twisted and distorted. Each of the noises looks something like this: (Just a lot more jagged and complicated)

synesthesia2.png

Weird, I know. But I'm not arguing with my synesthesia.

Hope those descriptions made sense.

When I hear loud noises, I see colors that I really can't identify as "blue" or "red". These are usually insync with whatever the noise may be.

This may or may not be what you're describing, though.
