Ye Olde Hegemony

They already kept cats as rat catchers during this time period aboard ships and warehouses and whatnot. Though tbh I'm not entirely sure if the cats wouldn't just catch it from the damn rats anyways.

Wasn't it the flees on the rats that transmitted it, not the rats themselves?

Wasn't it the flees on the rats that transmitted it, not the rats themselves?

That is the case. And now I have to find a medieval flea repellent (research?) on wikipedia aside from the usual "KILL IT WITH FIRE" bit.

EDIT: can anyone suggest some good movies for me to rent?

Hmmm... I'm sure there is some kind of traditional chemical used as flea repellant. Anybody know anything about any such substance?

It would appear feeding animals garlic may help with the fleas... Can anyone give me an idea of how good "Boondock saints" are?

It's a good enough movie. Entertaining, atleast.

Everyone knows that the black plague was caused by aliens.

The sour dough of the epitmous pie hungers for another's sweet lips to be dulled into a state of most irreverant humbleness

TUBULAR BELLS!

Heh, once people are done with their plague prevention plans, just send them my way please. I haven't started rolling on it, at least until the Mongols come in. Remember that armies from plague infested lands bring plague! :D

Now to list some possible effects:

Economic penalty (trade routes shut down for the most part)

Social Unrest

Possible Plague Riots

Cult religions based on some crazy ideas about the plague which will spread the plague, yet gain followers anyways

Armies will have trouble fighting in the streets with all the dead corpses

Effects that I don't want to use and why:

Plague kills off large portions of armies - Not really fun to have your force decimated, when they could be decimated by the Mongols instead

How can you blame something so innocent looking.

Crete begins herding and breeding rats BEFORE they are infected by plague. An arsnal of rats are kept and then the Holy Order of the Banhammer declares that all other rats of infidels, and national rat killing week is begun, as much as 5% of the budget is spent per year on rat catchers, with 15% set aside as a bonus to be split between all the rat catchers after the first year that there are no rats anywhere on the island, except the arsnal.

Extermination is expected to take three or four years.

Cretian Shepard Cats are being bred to.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Well I actually researched public hygiene earlier, and maybe it will pay off..

Anyway, waiting for an update before I do anything, and my plague plan is basically shut all ports, cats can get flees from rats, and if the rat dies the flea will just... You know.. Flee.

The black plague lasted for like 300 years in western europe, while not really affecting much of eastern (even poland was unnafected, I think). Just saying.

@Archi - What's the point of breeding the rats?

Hey retech.... so when are the ottomans coming into play?

It also killed 1/3rd of the population of Europe...

Report to the Royal Courts of Europe

The thirty thousand strong first wave of the Mongol invasion has wheeled around and galloped straight back over the east-west divide into Mongolia. It is rumored that there has been a leadership dispute within the Mongolian hoard, probaly after the death of an important strongman in the despotic society.

Meanwhile the plague has thus far been contained, and has not yet spread to any other country.

The line between insanity and genius is measured only by success, and I have a feeling that history will judge me a genius, for I intend to write it.
