ilovecuttingyews
Hey, a couple months ago I won an HP mini from a university draw. Because I have already got a laptop I've let my brother use the mini for casual web surfing etc. Lately I've been hard pressed to find space on my laptop and I'm wondering if there's a way for me to wirelessly transfer files from my laptop to my mini? I have tried to use things like USB's and even my brothers and my MP3 players to manually transfer the files, but any time I do, the movies (which are a large chunk of the files) become another format and only play with audio. I've also tried using my laptops 'wireless file sharing' feature but my mini never recognises my laptop. I am not a computer geek so any ideas you have will have to be spelled out clearly in english with step by step instructions. Thanks in advance
Sbrideau
Install CCCP on the computer you are trying to play the files, simple as that. http://www.cccp-project.net/

Dracion1
You might be able to get an adhoc wireless network set up, I know Windows 7 will let you do that and I'm pretty sure XP will too. All you need to do then is make sure you've got sharing turned on and you should be able to copy things between "Shared Documents" on each computer. "In the beginning, the universe was created. As for sbrideau, I prefer to transfer the files wirelessly because my USB is only 1GB, and you can imagine moving 100GB of files 1GB at a time.... though, I've put more time into researching how to transfer then it would have taken manually. But thanks for the link. I'll look into it if I am stuck with manual transfer.

The Runar
I transferred files from my old laptop to my new desktop with FTP. FileZilla has both client and server available (though server is Windows-only - which I assume you have though). I don't know how to use the server (because I use Linux), but it shouldn't be too hard to set up. Here's a tutorial I found. The Runar's (OSRS) DIY blog - most viewed Blogscape blog ever! indy500fan
You shouldn't have to create any sort of network, you should be automatically in the workgroup network from both Vista and XP. Just right click on a folder and then sharing options, and share it. Then go to network (can't quite remember where it is on vista/xp) and you will see both computers there (and any others that are connected to your network). Open the computer that is sharing files and you should see that shared folder there, along with maybe a few others Windows shares automatically. The CCCP was nice but with a 1GB USB it would take forever to transfer files. I downloaded Dropbox, but it's a 2GB max (if I was willing to pay, i would just buy one of those file transfer USB thingys) so transfering would stil be a pain in the butt. Adhoc hasn't worked for me and Filezilla looks confusing. I have the folder I want to share set to share to everyone and my mini can recognise my laptop, but when I open the link to the computer, it just comes up blank. Can someone give me some sort of step by step guide to this? I've tried but everything I find is made for techno-geeks and I'm not that sort of person.
