Dwarf fortress

Iconic

That's a great idea! Carve out two entire z-levels and fill the top one with water and the bottom one with piping! Then, you can use it to irrigate farms below and later build more pipes that connect it to the city below that! If something in that section of the city annoys you, simply pull a few levers and voila! Instant lack of annoyance! You could even make a series of indoor waterfalls to make the dwarfs happy. Unless they manage to fall in. But hey, that's what we have floodgates for right?

I have it aaaaall planned out. All I need is a volcano, a brook, and copius amounts of alcohol.

I'm not putting in more than one waterfall, because it would crash the FPS terribly. My piping is both above and part of the city though, mainly as architecture. If needed, I can still dig around it.

I installed a lava waterfall in my grand hall, surrounded by adamantine statues of the past fallen champions (Had to use over 100 wafers to get the full set of all 12...)

Still, with the amount of adamantine statues plastered over the fort, all my dwarves are incredibly happy, at least.

Not ready to declare war on hell yet, still arming and training the military. My danger room needs expanding, and I need more seiges so I can capture more targets.

well, be sure to watch the front door with seige engines at least. those will keep the enemies at bay outside, if any get past your traps and dogs.

There is a 20x4 corridor of cage traps, followed by a 10x4 corridor of adamantine serrated disk traps.

On that note, did you know that serrated disks hit 3 times each when used in a trap? So 10 adamantine serrated disks is 30 hits, and that's enough to kill pretty much anything.

Also, giants take freaking years to haul. Literally, one of my dwarves took two months to haul the cage down to the arena.

16,000 pounds(?) of weight.

Things can avoid traps. Unless you have a dragon(Or anything really, dragons can jsut kill things easier.) guarding your gates, then you'll still get attacked by theives. Who may just steal something and run off. (Also, bronze collosus? You can probably use a fluffy wambler as ammo for catapults/balistae and use that for the gigantic bastards.)

That's what the adamantine traps are for. I'd love to see ANYTHING survive 300+ adamantine serrated disk hits.

Kobolds don't present a concern, because the second they get revealed, there is no hope of getting out. My barracks is situated alongside the entrance corridor with fortifications along the whole thing.

Question: Do things that avoid traps simply avoid triggering them? If so, why not connect the discs to a lever and simply turn it off when dwarves need to get in or out?

cause the traps sometimes jam. And yeah, the theives don't trigger traps, they just snea past them. and the fact that they stay stealthed unless they get seen by animals, or they steal something.

Ross, can you take screenshots of your fortress? I could really use some pointers and a picture's worth a thousand words.

Uberforge. Not exactly well designed, but it gets the job done.

[hide]entranced.jpg[/hide]

Theres the entrance.

I'm not exactly an aesthetic architect, as you can see probably tell.

I always embark on a volcano, obviously, so metalworking industry is easy to set up.

Those stockpiles have a good 100 diamonds in them, 100 adamantine wafers or so, and assorted other bars.

The entrance is designed so that the military can react immedietly to any theif that gets inside or a seige in the event that I cannot close the bridge in time.

ORIGINAL DESIGN DO NOT STEAL.

Nah, just kidding.

Hmm. I think i could make that a bit more effecient, but i can never set up on a volcano. Never enoguh tree's for me to do what needs to be done. Or the sand for glass blowing stuff.

So you don't use a grid-like pattern when designing your fortress? Everything in my fortress is in a grid pattern around a central staircase.

I use a grid for my food workshops and stuff. 3x3 boxes with a single tile passage connecting them to the main corridor, relevant stockpiles, and other relevent workshops (Butcher-Tanner-Leatherowrker for instance)

But making forges on this scale in that pattern is a logistical nightmare.

What does your forge area look like?

Me? If so.. All my data got deleted from my comp update, but it seems the dwarves have a rather limited way in and out. if you needed to say.. Oh.. Get a piece of materiel to the gem cutters shop rather fast, and theres a mass of people comming down those stairs, it won't work well. Up/down stairs also help imensley, especcialy if you need to go down/up for materiels REALLY quickly. lLke mega quickly.

I only ever got one forge up-and-running, if you could call it that, and right after that everyone went insane/died.

You can make ammo too?

Congratulations, Urist McBonecrafter, you've been promoted. Hope you have fun in the hauling department.

EDIT:

I'm not seeing any option to make bolts from glass. Are you sure it should be here?

Oops, my bad. Yeah, can't make glass ammo. But you can make just about everything else useful out of glass... including pump stacks.
