Seraphi
Just build a heckton of traps everywhere. EDIT: Entrance hall is FULL of miasma. Lucky all my dwarves are fairly happy as it is or I'd have a tantrum spiral on my hands.
Nexaduro
Hehe, on the subject of combat reports, in my old fortress the leader of my military had an uncanny ability to always get a lucky hit on the first strike when going into combat unarmed... He shattered many a skull and, even though I never gave him a weapon, he had a higher kill count than the rest of my forces (save for Sibrek Bristlespear) combined. 10:53 PM - retech9691: I feel the need10:53 PM - retech9691: To include many chasms in my story arc10:53 PM - Resistance: You mean plotholes? Seraphi
And so, the fortress has fallen. An ambush, which put a lot of my recruits in the hospital, and then a seige, which finished me off. Solon Storlutoslan, the last remaining dwarf, fought off over 20 goblins with that artifact axe, before going berserk, finishing off the other 4 dwarves, and then dying of blood loss. He had severe sight damage, three broken limbs, and a damaged torso, and yet he kept fighting. NEW FORTRESS TIME. Any ideas on a theme?
Jehosaphat
EVIL OCEAN. Skeletal whales ftw. On a different note, it appears my gem setter is obsessed with one specific olivine ring.... he's encrusted the thing with ~10 types of gems now. It alone is worth more than most of my artifacts combined, not including my native-gold-crown-of-awesomeness.
Jehosaphat
Just fended off my first goblin siege, with 2 soldiers, a moronic hunter, and a bunch of war dogs as casualties. May they rest in peace, blah blah blah, I managed to catch on of the goblins. Waiting for my river to thaw so I can test out my goblin drowning chamber. Oh, and I'm building a massive microcline/schist spire for kicks.
Seraphi
Megaconstructions are always fun. Goddamned ambushes are the most annoying thing ever to happen. I chain wardogs next to my entrance to detect them without fail now, because if I'd caught them before in my old fortress, it would still be standing. Jehosaphat
Hmm.... it appears that there is one major flaw in my goblin drowning system... All the goblin's belongings get washed away in the current. Meaning I have no chance to melt them down into useful stuff. Looks like I'll just have to make a goblin shooting range instead. Seraphi
Install a grate, Pie. Liquids go through it, but items and bodies do not.
Jehosaphat
Thanks for the tip, Ross. I have put into effect a new dwarven decree: Any hostile enemies captured capable of distance attacks are to be drowned.Any hostile enemies captured incapable of distance attacks are to be used for practice shooting by either the crossbow squad or by a ballistae. Seraphi
So I just killed a large group of Rhesus Macaques, but my dwarves are refusing to haul them to the refuse stockpile so that they can be butchered... None of them are rotten, and I can see no reason they aren't being hauled. Furthermore, the butcher refuses to acknowledge their existance, and says there is nothing capable of being butchered. Is this a bug?
Earth
i can never get the dwarves to haul the corpses, so i trap, tame, then butcher the monkeys that way.. Jehosaphat
Go to Orders -> Refuse. Make sure you have "Gather refuse from outside" on, else your dwarves will only move corpses and such that are inside the fort.
Seraphi
Yeah, that was it. Thanks. I'm trying to take a more proactive approach to corpses this time (AKA, not leave them outside forever to rot) and I was slightly confused at that. On another note, just dug into an underground cavern within 4 dorfmonths of starting. LET THE MUSHROOM TREES RISE.
Jehosaphat
So I left my legendary boneworker (dude made one of my only useful artifacts - donkey bone buckler) with a task to create bone bolts on repeat. It just so happens I had slaughtered a migrant wave's worth of new animals right before that, and killed off a mass of cats before that, so.... I now have enough masterwork bone bolts for my 10-man crossbow squad to train themselves to legendary, and still have enough to take out ~5 goblin sieges. Yeeeeeah. Jehosaphat
Speaking of goblin sieges, I just got one. And halfway through the long golbin trek to where my fort actually is, Windows decides to go, "oh, time to update myself and shut down automatically!" I was hoping to actually have some fun, but Windows wouldn't let me. So... TIEM FOR NEW FORT. Don't wanna play the old one without the challenge I would have had fending off 2 pages of invaders. Jehosaphat
I'm digging a stairwell down to the magma sea. MAGMA SMELTERS (and demons), HERE I COME.You have to dig through bluemetal pillars in order to hit demons, iirc. It goes:Cavern 1 - wimpy monstersCavern 2 - meh monstersCavern 3 - scary monstersMagma Sea - MAGMAAAAABluemetal Tubez - Spoiler your spoilers, Ross you heretic!Happy Fun Stuff - Death. Oh yeah. My new embark is on a 2x2 area - cuts down on savelag a LOT, and ups your FPS something wonderful. These dwarves are going at like Mach 2... Seraphi
Yeah, I have begun adamantine mining operations. Best make sure not to dig through to those demons. Also, magma smelters and forges are built.
Jehosaphat
I think I just had the most epic artifact of all time made. A Green Glass.... BUCKET. Worth 10,800 dwarfbux. The_Mather1
Any tips on how I can get DF to work? The only thing I managed to do was to set where my settlement was supposed to be and attempt giving them orders... then the game messed up.Also stonesense slate didn't work. Nexaduro
Stonesense is worthless except for showing off your fortress to those unversed in the way of the Dorf. You need Dwarf Therapist, it's the only reason I ever got anything done whatsoever. 10:53 PM - retech9691: I feel the need10:53 PM - retech9691: To include many chasms in my story arc10:53 PM - Resistance: You mean plotholes?
