Chaotic Rapier or Chaotic Longsword?

Recommended Posts

Its been my goal to get a CLS for about a week now and I am well on the way to it, the reason I want it is simply for monster hunting. TD's, Bandos, Sara and Zammy in particular. Although lately I have been hearing a lot of people say that the rapier is better here for solos as well as training, slayer etc.

I would be mainly using whichever I get for solo's and Duos at the bosses I have already mentioned. Now I know a lot of people will have their own opinions formed on this, but what I am really looking for is someone who has experienced both, preferably has both, and can say which is better.

I understand that gear may be a variable, if so please post that to.

Thanks.

CLS is superior on high-defence opponents (Graardor, Zilyana) and rapier on anything else. Rapier is still good on Graardor, and on Zilyana you can use Verac's (ideally, the maul). If you want to tank Zilyana, CLS is the way to go (pick up divine whilst you're at it). If you want to do all you listed, go with rapier or get all three chaotic weapons.

Erm... (do realise this is all from the general discussion thread). On solo Bandos, you probably wouldn't notice too much unless you got crashed by a CLS-using overloaded turmoiling etc. etc. person. Duo Sara it might be better to go with Verac's/CLS, since you have to hit-and-run and that makes high speeds less useful.

Yeah I figured this would probably burried somewhere in that thread, although thats mostly dedicated to pking/training, or so I gather from the pages I have read.

Last question, which would be hands down better for TD solos?

Rapier. No doubt. If you can switch, that is.

If you are getting both, rapier + maul beats CLS everywhere except solo Bandos. Including solo/duo Sara, TD's if you can't switch etc.

I don't own either, but just for the heck of it, I'll add my two cents.

The Chaotic Rapier is a.... Toothpick. And those who wield it along side a rune defender are known as the "Toothpick-wielding-warriors-that-wield-a-pretty-big-toothpick-along-side-a-slightly-smaller-but-still-decently-sized-toothpick".

A toothpick of death. That is basically a supped up whip. It excels in DPS against the longsword in fighting basic enemies for slayer and such.

...But if you're like me, you don't want to pay 200k an hour for marginally faster training or slaying. But some would.

On the other hand, the Chaotic longsword excels in all stats. Except it's missing one thing: Speed.

I'm pretty sure this could cut though bosses defense like butter. And would be better for any sort of PvP. This is what i would most likely go for when i get 80 DG'ing. As I'm not ready to fork over 200K/hr for general training. I would only use it for PvP and such.

What it comes down to is what you're going to be using it for most. A lot will still say that the rapier is still better for boss hunting. But i haven't seen any stats on this.

It's an improved whip, by a lot. The cost is closer to 100k/hr, and all bosses except Graardor and Zilyana have low enough defence that rapier has higher dps. All minions are best killed with rapier, so if you count the time for that, rapier is probably better anywhere if you are getting only one weapon. If you're getting two, maul allows flashing soul split on Graardor.

As for rapier being a toothpick, well, CLS is bulky and over-sized. Elegance all the way .

Link has no idea what he's talking about. His entire argument is essentially "CLS looks cooler and people who have rapiers are losers with toothpicks."

I have my opinion on the subject (rapier), but you should definitely read the entire chaotic weapons thread. It's full of calculations and testimonies by owners of the weapons that all prove the rapier to be superior to the CLS in nearly every way. CLS is second best at everything with the sole exception of solo Bandos. Rapier and Maul both beat it everywhere else, definitively.

If all you plan on doing is solo Bandos, get the CLS. If you plan on doing anything else, get the rapier. The most preferable option, however, is to get both the rapier and maul.

Again, you should really read the whole thread. It's very eye-opening.

Alright thanks Ob, I got through the first 2 pages and last one but didn't read all the body of it :P

Might head over and do that now.

But of all the aforementioned things solo bandos is probably the thing I'd do least.

Yeah, definitely get the rapier in that case. Besides, the only downside to using a rapier at Bandos is the possibility of being crashed by someone with a CLS or maul. That's not really likely to happen, though.

It's worth mentioning that the cost for a chaotic weapon is far below 200k/hour, with pure cash.

it depends on the # of monsters that are attacking you simultaneously.

If it's just 1 at a time, then it's far below 200k/hour

PS calculations would indicate that a rapier on stab is much better than a longsword on slash, in terms of DPS, even on heavily armored player targets

You need to realize that a +10% increase in DPS will always give you a +10% increase in kill rate

whereas a +10% increase in accuracy will always give you less than a +10% increase in kill rate

I own rapier and maul so I have a bit of experience.

TDS:

w/ Steel titan : CLS = Maul >> Rapier

w/o Titan: CLS = Rapier > Maul (really depends on how well you switch)

Bandos:

CLS > Rapier by a small amount (the two are pretty comparable though)

Sara:

Maul > CLS > Rapier

Slaying

Rapier >>>>> Anything else

DKS (supreme):

Rapier >>>>> Anything else

Training

Rapier >>>>>> Anything else (by far - it's not marginal)

Against Dragons

Rapier >>>>>> Anything else

Also, @ Link, it's clear you never owned any of those weapons. The cost is FAR below 200k an hour and from what I hear, CLS sucks for pk'ing.
