Jazz

Since the 'Recommend a band' thread has disappeared, I guess I'll make a new thread.. Sort of. For general discussion of jazz, I guess, but I am really looking for some good jazz, preferably with a nice bassline and lots of saxophone. Hopefully available on last.fm.

Pretty good synopsis of the genre, along with hyped artists and popular musicians.

Last.fm ? :|

Depends on what type of jazz you like, TBH. Some of my favorites - [NB: These are all mostly blues, and noir jazz].

* Grant Green

* Kenny Burrell [:thumbup:]

* Chet Baker [:thumbup:]

* Gerry Mulligan

You might also like some Sinatra and perhaps Johnny Hartman. But that's not for everyone ...

I say last.fm if I'd like to get into a genre without having to wade through obscure sub-genres.

My favorite jazz is the work of Maynard Ferguson. He was quite popular in the 70s. He can hit all of the highest notes on his trumpet and is able to breathe while playing. His most notable work was the Rocky Theme Song :thumbsup:

If you like big band jazz, this is a great guy to listen to. He was so popular, that following his death at 78 in 2006, the jazz world mourned and held a very emotional tribute concert in his honor. My father attended the concert, and it was phenomenal (I saw it on DVD).

[spoiler=Songs:]Chameleon (my personal favorite):

MacArthur Park:

Gonna Fly Now/Rocky Theme (Not necessarily jazz, but he does hit a few high notes) :

Maynard Ferguson Tribute concert version of Gonna Fly Now (dozens of trumpet and saxophone players on stage) :

If you liked those, I recommend Wayne Bergeron and Eric Miyashiro as well.

Player since 2004. All skills 1M+ XP.

John Zorn for something a little different.

Yes. If you're looking for lots of saxophone, something really interesting, different and kinda crazy - John Zorn. His Bar Kokhbah and Masada stuff doesn't have much saxophone [any at all if I remember..], but I like that. :thumbup:

The original Masada group has sax, Electric Masada as well. :thumbup:

Ah, alright. That's one of the few from the book of angels series I haven't heard.

To TS: if you want to try something more 'easy' from Zorn, go for The Dreamers or Alhambra Love Songs...If you're into the more challenging work you could try some work from Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra.
