Maging Abbysal demons

Recommended Posts

For reasons I can't explain I want to Fire surge Abbysal demons for 99 mage.

I'm totally lost on the gear and method I should approach this with. Should I even mage Abbysals, or should I mage steel/iron dragons instead? Or how about something else? Am I missing a gear set that would be more effective? Does Fire surging Abbysal's even profit anymore? What does profit?

I can't afford to use Bandos' to tank, and I'm not using Battle robes dude to my inability to get FoG tokens.

Which of the following setups should I use, and why:

tank2.png

tank1.png

tank3.png

tank9.png

tank8.png

tank7.png

tank6.png

tank5.png

tank4.png

If it's hard to look at the pictures because there in hid tags, just let me know, I'll take the tags out. I just didn't want it to be a ridiculously long topic :P

And should I use:

EE + yip

EE + Yip + Mage pots

EE + Wolpertinger

Uni

Uni + Mage pots

6 or 7 seems best to me; ahrims has decent melee defence after all. Maybe use a bss for 10 more mage atk and 3 more prayer bonus (over dfs). With a unicorn you should be plenty fine.

I find that hard to read so I'll just state them.

Farseer Helm

Arcane Stream Necklace

Ahrim Robetop

Ahrim Robeskirt

Infinty Boots

Mages Book > Unholy Book > DFS (If you get hit too much)

Seers Ring (i)

Staff of Light

God Cape (Use SW cape if praying)

  • EE + Bunyip or Uni will be fine. (Get an EEE?)
  • If you want to be lazy, use SW cape and pray melee.

Since you don't have soul split and can't use overloads, i would go for the zammy book setup, switching arena cape for sw cape(or ardy 3), using wolpetinger, deflect melee and leech magic.

If you have the option, i would advise getting 85 dungeoneering and maging frost dragons, as your profit quite heavily from it compared to abyssal demons(where you about break even).

I plan on getting 85 dungeoneering after 99 mage, but what would be the harm in getting it first and then maging frosts instead of Abbys? Know a guide or something for fire surging frosts, or is it exactly like Steels/Irons?

And the problem I have with the high mage bonus setups is that Abbysal demons are, well, demons, which, as we know, are weak to magic. I'm fairly positive the best setup would be a tank setup with -20+ magic bonus and an EE + wolpertinger for faster kills / less cost per kill?

But that's why I made this thread, to find out if I'm wrong.

There's a half-decent(at least i think so) frost dragon maging guide linked in my signiture, if you are interested. Maging frosts would also help you in leveling ranged.

Abyssals are demons, but that doesn't mean they don't have defense, they just have a very low magic level, and defense against magical attacks is both defense level and magic level, thus a higher magic attack is always better. With a decent enough prayer bonus the cost of prayer potions would be very low. I would suggest always having atleast 70 magic attack bonus.

There are alot of alternatives for the gear. You don't need super antifire, or extremes, but it'd be very helpful getting your herblore up as soon as possible.

The whole reason I'm killing frost dragons after 85 Dungeoneering is to pay for 95 prayer and 92 herblore. Since I wont be using epicly expensive gear, I'd have a mage bonus of 114 and a prayer bonus of 6, or 108 and 12, if using a Soul wars cape instead of Ardougne 3. Deflect mage, leech range and mage, antifire pots, prayer pots, yak + scrolls, cannon + cballs?

Assuming a 6 prayer bonus, I'd be needing an anti pot/prayer pot ratio of 1/8.

Assuming a 12 prayer bonus, I'd be needed an anti pot/prayer pot ratio of 1/7.

Is the loss of 6 mage bonus worth the 5 prayer pots saved per trip? FYI, this would still only allow me 5 antifire's per trip, as I wouldn't have enough space to warrant bringing an extra anti. But it would give me a few more inventory spaces to work with, and keep in mind I'm just doing this casually, not 100% efficient, I want to have fun, not grind.

What about Iron's/Steel's/Mithril's? Do any of those profit enough to warrent doing? I do have a Pack yak, so I can bank any and all drops worth over 500gp or however much Scroll's cost.

Or am I better off just getting 85 dgne now and maging frosts, or even Abbysals, like I planned to do?

I did a bit of fire surging miths/irons on my way to 99 mage. I can't tell you the hourly xp rates or costs, but I'm pretty sure I lost money both ways, though I did find it quite fun. One thing you might consider doing is maging rex for some of the experience. I got around 60k mage xp and 1-2m profit per hour depending on respawn times and how lucky you get with drops.

Rex is quite possibly more annoying then soloing TD's, I just cannot stand Rex. besides, I don't get to play much now a days, maybe 10- hours a week. That's like 2/3 trips per week, but that's assuming I played in 3/5 hour intervals, and I can't be bothered to log in for that much time.

At this point it comes down to Abbysals, and if so, what gear, or Frost dragons.

Do abyssals with Opeths set up. A friend of mine mages abby demons for tasks and with 95 defence manages to go whole tasks on just yips, so with 99 defence you shouldn't be too troubled. Also you can take yak with some food and to bank drops, pony is overkill, even for maging, but if you want, test it out first.

I want to know if Fire surging Abbysals profits, first. I'll do the calculations by myself when I get home tonight if no one else does it by then.

It really doesn't matter if it profits... you're paying for maging and making money from abyssals, if they cancel eachother out, that's coincidence. If you wanted profit, you'd go for frost drags + barraging lobs to 99 summ or similar.

You're telling me it doesn't matter to me weather I profit? I'm telling you it does matter, which is why I asked. That's like saying it doesn't matter how many charms I get bursting, if I get a lot it's just coincdence. I'm paying for maging and getting charms from lobbys. If I wanted mage exp I'd alch and If I wanted charms I'd kill waterfiends.

I wouldn't have asked if It didn't matter, as it's a matter of personal preference. I would just like to at least break even or make some money, I can't afford to loose any more cash.

I think the point he was trying to make was that there is no direct profit from demons, only a chance for profit. Frost dragons on the other hand, drop bones worth 17k each 100% of the time, which is greater than the money you are spending to kill them. If you are insistent on not losing any money, you should get your dungeoneering up.

Well the fact of the matter is, abyssals aren't a great place to train magic if you have the option on killing frost dragons. Where as with abyssal demons, having average luck, you will barely profit, frost dragons will always be more than 2m an hour no matter what armor/spells/etc you use(i think they are more than 2m an hour if you don't use any combat style at all- just stand there and let the cannon kill them). The time to kill abyssal demons was 5 years ago.

Green, blue, or bronze dragons will break even.

Abyssals will loose money.

Don't waste your time getting dungeoneering for the sole purpose of maging frost dragons.

Frost dragons have decent magic def so you'll go through extended periods of not hitting.

I'll be meleeing them for hundreds of millions and hopefully a Visage after 99 mage and range, so why not get a head start?

Point taken, guess I'm off to dameonheim! I wont be using a cannon, though, it's just too messy, if you ask me. Plus that's a massive drain on profits, right?

It's not worth it to kill frost dragons without a cannon, it will barely be better than abyssal demons.

As for frost dragons magic defense- with leech magic/defense, it's not that bad. Magic is around as good as range with zammy bow+zamorak arrows.

Oh, less cost/damage with cannon versus more surges? ;)

Should I use leech range, too, since I'll be using a cannon? So deflect mage and leech defense/range/magic?

Leech ranged is probably not worth it. I'm not sure how it works, but Zarfot claims that the cannon uses the accuracy of your primary attack. This can mean:

  1. Magic attack + magic level vs. magic defence
  2. Magic attack + magic level vs. ranged defence
  3. Magic attack + ranged level vs. magic defence
  4. Magic attack + ranged level vs. ranged defence
  5. Ranged attack + ranged level vs. ranged defence

2 seems the most likely to me (not the last one according to Zarfot), meaning that ranged level is no use. Also, the dragons have no ranged level to leech.
