Faux
Prince William gets Engaged to Kate Middleton... http://www.mirror.co...15875-22720983/ On another note, who is more obsessed with the royal family? Us Brits, Amercians, Canadians? I hear the British Monarchy is much more of a big thing outside of the UK, am i right? - why is this? the only time canada cares about your royal family is when the queen visits. other than that i never see anything about it on the papers :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
stevepole
I think people care so much about the Royal Family is just because they're interesting and one of the last dominate monarchy in Europe even if it is more of a figure head role these days. I know there are other monarchies in Europe but none that are as well know. It's also very exclusive in that sense that no one can just become royalty over night, which is probably also apart of the appeal.
Giordano
Man, you can never crack a joke at the English and their feudal system, soccer, or tea. :( "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is." obfuscator
The royal family holds symbolic power only - afaik the Queen has to sign all laws into being before they become active. However, she will generally sign whatever parliament brings her, and if she didn't, she'd be overthrown. Interestingly enough, in the past, Royals (not england) have abdicated the throne to make a moral objection to laws they would have had to sign had they stayed. Piscis_Rex
Technically, every law passed by parliament has to be approved by the monarch first, and only the monarch has the power to dissolve parliament in order for a general election to take place, but the Queen can't really wield her power how she wants, if she tried to, we could have a repeat of the civil war on our hands, so nowadays, the monarch is just a figurehead for the government 99.99999998465% of the world's population is not me, if you are the 0.00000001535% that is me, put this in you signature -"being famous is like being a woman, if you have to tell people you are, you aren't"
Laura
Yeah, I haven't met an American who cares about any English monarchy. Most people don't even know that England is a continent on the other side of the Pacific, or that we defeated them in both World Wars.Wait, how many continents are there again? :P
