If playing the game in moderation does something to benefit society, then that also means playing the game for extreme amounts of time also benefits society (though probably not that much). $6/month is constant regardless of how many hours you spend on the game.

I can relate, my problem is I'm very focused on one thing, and because I had not much else to do at times, it was RS. I quit some week ago. Now I'm focused on learning the details of the Linux kernel and C++, got more projects coming along.

 

For some people the whole moderation thing doesn't apply, it's a matter of boredness/distraction and letting it lead you to RS. Learn to get yourself some big tasks/projects and monitor your distraction, resist it when it happens and keep focusing. When it comes to games, I won't abandon them, but I see RS as a waste of time and I appreciate people can play it only half an hour or so a day and feel perfectly happy. But I like some fast paced thinking, so I will refrain to other games that will deliver this, as RS compared to other games is a waste of time in a sense that it takes more to get something basic done. I've learned certain things from the game, and don't regret playing it (cept for the last months).

I never said it benefited society, lol. People need to have fun every once in a while.

What about eating, drinking, shopping, socializing and all the other stuff normal people do?

I play Runescape and guitar... learned French when it was a requirement but forgot it all now.

 

Since I don't want to be a professional musician or anything, all those things are just for fun. There are a couple weeks where I'll play more than 20 hours a week (I was sick a couple weeks in the summer and probably played like 8 hours a day for those weeks, lol), some (most) weeks, I'll play less. It's all about having fun... if someone wants to play 60 hours a week and they're enjoying life, who are you to judge them?

Someone has not done anything wrong just because they spend their life playing a game. But there is alot more to life than games, and that's what OP is pointing out.

 

Many people say "Self controll" and that kind of stuff, but i find that crap to be honest. Self controll? If you find a activity fun, will you really restrict yourself to 1 hour a day? Or will you play more than 2 hours? Or maybe 4 hours a day?

^ This. As said before... RS doesn't ruin anything for me now. I'm farther ahead in life the 99% of people my age... But looking and seeing my time played is just saddening. Lol. Although I enjoy(ed) my time on, I picture how much farther / happier I'd be without that time spent online.

I'd skip going out with friends to play runescape. I never did homework because I was playing runescape.

 

My life would be better now if I never found the game.

Simple Answer: Self control.

 

Its like pretty much anything, if it begins to consume your life, generally you alienate people.

 

At least there are weekly updates and a large variety of things to do in RS, it must be worse for people addicted to things like Call of Duty were things get pretty monotonous (despite being a great game)

The point I'm trying to make is that you shouldn't worry about the past like that. I sacrificed schoolwork and friends for RS at one time too, but I don't regret it. I'm in college now and my high school grades don't matter at all. I'm in another state now and I am still good friends w/ the people whom I neglected for RS. If you learn from your mistakes, you can start seeing your mistakes as blessings in disguise.
