My junior year, I will get to take a course called "Theory of Knowledge," which bascially discusses how we learn, which I am very excited about. it sounds very interesting.

I take that course! Its a really fun course, except i think we are really behind because we are just covering the Allegory of the Cave ( My Favorite!!!) and the teacher gets offtopic at times. Are you doing all IB in Junior and Senior year along with AP?

Yea! Oh you must be taking IB then. So is Theory of Knowledge as interesting as it sounds? Anything else you can tell me about IB? It's going to be tough, I can tell already with my three AP classes as a sophomore (d'oh). Where do you live?

Add me on MSN, we can talk IB ;) [email protected]

IB is really really tough, In my opinion i think its a lot harder than AP. With 7 IB classes, its all work and no play (not to mention IB testing >.<). Theory of knowledge is a two year course. You cover it some of it as a junior and some of it as a senior. Right know we covered the ways of knowing and basically what the characteristics of truth are. From my what my friends told me, in senior year you cover language and math and how they affect what you know. I live in California and i would add you except i dont use MSN or other IM apps.

I go back in.. 4 hours. :|

Lame huh, first day back at school an I can't sleep.

Back to the topic question.. I [bleep]en hate school. I've gradually gone downhill , seriously... year 7 I was top of the class in everything, year 8 I still was but I didn't do work as much, year 9 same as year 8, year 10 and I start to worry, try and do work but can't be bothered anymore. Now, year 11, final GCSE exams in like 4 months and I've done no coursework in anything, tests I beat most people cuz I can learn easy but I HATE coursework.

I HATE it and I wish it wasn't a part of GCSE courses, because I [bleep]ING HATE IT!!! :@

So yeah in conclusion.. my life's being flushed pretty much, but I'm not phased cuz I always expected myself to turn out as a hobo, way things are going I'ma reach those expectations.

I have 1/2 a year left, than off to college. I've been enjoying school a lot more during my Senior year, but I still hate waking up so early (meh, every morning i'm draging my self out of bed). The homework isn't bad at all as well, because I do 98% of it in my seminar class in the morning, which I have about 20-25 mins in.

And so far its working, my lowest grade this quarter was an 88%, which, last year that was a higher grade of mine :/.

Apart from that school is great, the facilities are great I have wonderful teachers and some great friends, but everything seems to be about exams nowadays instead of learning for the sake of learning and wonder.

Yeah, I agree. I hate hate hate exams, and teachers who give you a grade only based on how well you did on her/his exams are just dumb. Everyone can do well on an exam, it's basically just a question of if you're lazy and don't study, or if you study a lot. Quizzes that the teacher doesn't tell you about beforehand are ok though, because you prove what you really know.

I have one teacher who doesn't believe in tests. He's awesome!

Well...if you are lazy and don't study and therefore do bad on the test - isn't your grade still a result of how much you know? You didn't study and therefore don't know the material. Whereas, if you study a lot for a test, then its just like the quiz because you are being tested on what you know (or should know). :?

Well, the thing is you usually forget basically everything you've studied. I mean the teacher teaches you something, and then he/she gives you a test on it. You go home and study for it, but you'll eventually forget most of it later. So basically you only know the details for a few weeks. At the end of the term, is it fair to get an A for that anyway?

If you have tests or quizzes that the teacher doesn't tell you about, you can test your real knowledge, like see how much you know without revision.

I'd have to disagree with that. I retain an awful lot of knowledge from studying for tests. The point of school afterall is to learn - if they only test you on what you know instead of pushing you to know more and then testing you, its not worth it. If you can't retain any knowledge you've learned after taking a test, you aren't studying properly.

What you're saying is true, I guess. But there are many people who don't really understand the thing they're learning (in for instance Chemistry and Physics), and then when they study they just learn everything they don't understand by heart and repeat it on paper later on the test.

Also, I feel that the things I know after learning something without studying stays in my head forever or for a very long time. While the other details and things I had to study to know gets forgotten much earlier.

I agree with that. I won't retain half of the stuff that I learned when I took Chemistry...but I had to take it. It was good for me to learn that and what I remember could one day benefit me. Knowledge is power...I want as much as I can get.

That point of tests in my opinion? A grade. The point of grades? Telling potential employers how hard of a worker you are, or what you know. Anyone can say they know something, earning the grade gives you the diploma which is proof you know or can do something. That's why we need tests and grades.

For instance, I could go to a college, sit in through classes and learn a lot without ever being enrolled in the school and therefore not having to take tests. I could go to enough classes to get my degree in a subject...but when its all said and done - I don't get any proof that I know what I do.

Yeah, you're right about having proof. Although many times grades are given unfairly and I think it's unfair to give grades only based on how well you do on tests.

I HATE ALGEBRA II. I do all of my homework, I understand it, and study for tests. YET, I still have an F in the class.

I studied SO hard for the Algebra II Final Exam, yet, I still got an F-68% on it.

I don't understand how, while I'm doing all of the right things to prepare myself, some kids in the class who NEVER do their homework, NEVER pay attention in class, and NEVER study for tests, can come in and get a 94% on the Final Exam.

I freaking give up. And it's not because I spend too much time on here...because I manage my time so that I get homework done and I don't get on when I have to study for a test.

I just don't know what to do. This is my first ever F...well...quite frankly...my first ever semester grade that is below a B.

People say, "Oh, it's not about the grades...just try your best and the grades will come." The problem is, I AM trying my best, but I am still failing math. The other classes I am perfectly fine in...

I give up.

I got a C in my math mock without revising at all, which is great cuz I never do anythin in class... again, the bad part, I haven't done any [bleep]ING COURSEWORK so I'll still fail :)

What the hey, I'm a failure, so what? :P

In regards to tests - the only test that REALLY tests your knowledge is open book. Fight if you will, but rather than test your MEMORY (which most do) they determine how well you can apply what you already know and have available to you - which is basically what you're going to have to do out there in the real world.

Well, it's about to start again and I'm excited. I love school, I love the social part, and all of my friends.

What do you guys think about school? Favorite thing and worst thing about it?

I hate the kids that smoke at school, and moronic teachers, but that's really all that I hate about it. :P

lol, the 2006 schools are different then the 1979 schools, we had apple 1's. and i loved them, you guys have pentium 4 processors. i remember when the pentium 8088 came out, and i jumped up and screamed because i knew my computer would be going alot faster. we didn't have moronic teachers love, we had idiots with a chalk board that tried to do simple calculus problems, and then gave us the wrong awnser, i was always that girl with the glasses and long brown hair that would correct the teacher and tell him how he was wrong. Then in physics, PHYSICS WAS FUN! PWF! thats was what our teacher has as a poster, and it simply said in big bold capital letters... PWF!!!! yes that was crazy, i hated my gym teacher though, i was a tall girl, and he forced me to play basket ball. everytime i went to gym i dreaded the thought of mr.ERWIN yelling at me. then there was Art, and my teacher was totally into Fonts, and made me make a font up, so i made a binary like font... those were the days

I had a teacher who still uses an Apple II to type and print all of his assignments out. It was fantastic! :P
