RuneScape Game Mechanics - How is damage calculated?

Recommended Posts

Well, I've always wondered about how the random number generator calculates damage. Could someone provide some insight into this?

My personal theory would be that it consists of two 'dices':

The first dice would be the hit/miss dice, where the attack and defense rolls are tossed. If the attack roll exceeds the defense roll, then move on to the second dice.

The second dice would determine the base hit, calculated using current equipment/prayers/boosts. Any number between 1 and the maximum hit would be chosen (equal chance of any number), and then the number would be multiplied by any multiplier required (e.g. Ags special).

What do you guys think? I'm not sure if this is the correct section and whether this is a thread worthy post, so mods, please move my thread if necessary.

The spreadsheet is great but I can't seem to find the bit with the theory of how damage is calculated. Knowing how damage is calculated is useful because it gives an insight on how Dragon Claw's special attacks work, and such

it runs on a dice system, just reverse engineer it, it's just some algebra.

In all actuality, it's a 3 dice system, in which at first, attack and defense dices are rolled(having attack/defense max hit amount of dies) and if the attack roll is higher, the strength dice is rolled from 1 to strength max hit to determine the damage dealt. Not much use of this for dragon claws spec as it has some different mechanics for dealing damage than any other special weapon. All max hits are basically calculated based on the same equation but for the magic defense one, you just need some knowledge of the stacking for special effects.

It's a lot easier then that for an idiot to sound smart on the internet.

That's exactly what you're doing right now... just saying.

I'd guess that activating the multipliers just adds possible rolls to the dice.

That'd show up in the distribution - adding multiple rolls would make the hits more normally distrubuted, rather than evenly.

If I'm understanding right, you have an equal possibility from hitting 1 thru your max hit from what was said above, but that doesn't seem right?

Like on Lrc creatures, you seem to be constantly hitting 300+, but the posts above contradicts that
