When you say 'spice things up' are you reffering to A_bert releasing monsters from beyond the wall, then I completely agree with you but I think sometimes some 'mild' spicing up (dissent, false information) could add a bit of fun for all.

If you are gonna spice things up then you say in the open post that random events will happen...and you give an example of a typical random event.

You don't suddenly start feeding false information for the next two weeks because you feel like it, or because the dice was a 1.

Random events should add something to the game...not take over the game because you happen to be bored.

The difference is that A_bert just stressed people out saying gigantic demons were going to kill everyone randomly, if you add a bit of mild spicing up then you won't stress people out but you'll create fun. I know that Silent Hill III does this well by making lamposts appear as monsters and it keeps people on there toes but it doesn't kill them.

Retech cuts down all the lamp posts in advance

I point out lamp posts are lamp posts not monsters

And stuff that doesn't kill people has a tendancy to be ignored, or swept aside as an annoyance....like 5,000 rebels appearing when your smallest army is 20,000...It doesn't add fun, it just hacks people off.

Although I agree that being respectful is an important factor I don't believe that how much respect a person can command is a necessary factor in moderating a game. You are basically saying that the more respect a moderator commands the more they can get away with being a bad moderator.

No...the more respect a moderator commands the further people are willing to go before going 'This is stupid.'

Moderator says:

Your ship, carrying all your money, explodes randomly.

If the mod has a habit of doing stuff for the lulz...hence unrespected...then people go 'Mod is being an idiot, this game is so terrible.'

If the mod doesn't do anything for the lulz...hence respected...then people go 'Oh. Is their any evidence who did it?'

Evidence of bad moderators are litered through the Tavern.

On balance, myself and Dusty make bad players.

A moderator does need to put his foot down, regardless of the respect he recieves people are obliged to listen to the moderator.

People are under no obligation to listen to the moderator...The worst the mod can do is kick them out of the game...And if they aren't listen to the mod then that isn't really a big issue.

I disagree with what you were saying, if a person is winning why should you stop them winning.

I disagree with you saying red is blue...Please point out where I said this?

You have some good points written above but I think the formula resides in the actual game and systems instead of the moderator, for example if I was to use the battle system that me and Mather have been talking about you wouldn't need a good moderator to work out battles, infact it would be impossible to make mistakes during the battle.

And yet whenever such a system has been proposed in the past it has not inspired interest...Or has been shown to be quickly abusable and linear.

As with Mather's Hegemony and Empire.

I do look forward to whatever you come up with...I am just saying that if you go into this with the view that people will listen and accept a totally new system simply because the mod wants it...I would refer you to Sere's Hegemony, as that was pretty much a masterclass in what happens the mod played god...rather than servant.

Also...I don't claim anything. A claim implies an absence of proof.

Every Hegemony thus far is that proof.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

I didn't think I was THAT bad of a moderator, aside from my laziness and lack of creativity when people roll 1s (rocks fall, you're unconscious.) Oh, and my penchant for portaling people to the land of fire and brimstone.

Supreme Commader 2 YEAHHHHH!

It's a REALLY big shaft.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?

I play SC2, i'm not a professional at it though. It is fun playing random races, because it's a suprise as to what you're facing and what you'll be equiped with.

Congrats. I haven't even tried online matches yet, i'm really bad against the AI. Although that may be because Zerg aren't made for my usual 'Build defenses and get the big guns' stratagy.

Turtles unite!

I favour building a base, then using crack troops, rather than big guns.

Its more...interesting...than tank rushing.

I remember a mod for Red Alert 2 that added another 2 veterancy levels...So I would start out with my twenty tanks, send them on patrol, some destroyed, some become level 2, some stay the same. Then build some more up to twenty, go out, some level 3s, levels 2s and 1s. Then again, and again.

Then seperate out the level 5s, and send the rest out on another patrol, until I had 20 level 5s.

Then I would line up an attack using just my level 5s. Usually the base defences took out one or two before I plowed my way through them, and then residual forces took between five and ten...leaving me with between 13 and 8 to lay waste to their base.

Probably looking at 60-80 tanks killed, verses maybe 30 if you just tank rushed...But there is something to be said for actually being able to control your units, rather than just clicking a vague target and letting them do their thing.

Another thing is that a tank armada generally draws everything back to base, or super weapon attacks...where as 20 or so tanks...rather large, but no one expects them to tear the whole base apart.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Problem is Arch, I have no idea if the veterency ranks for SC2 units even give damage bonuses... Although I usually let the crack troops/specialised heavy assaults do their thing. Which usually causes DEATH. With a smaller army, too.

Do you know what sucks? Getting a lower score on the AMC 10 than last year because you accidentally subtracted incorrect, divided incorrectly, and said 708 was less than 700.

Anywho, Spacechem is a good game, you should buy it...Then buy it for all the people you know, like me, because you know me.

On a more serious note it is actually a pretty awesome game, despite, as Dungeonal put it, being a game about flow charts.

It even has a cool storyline.
