The Back Room

Exactly. The world is, obviously, huge. Changes in one continent may mean an entirely new language spun off, with only remnants of the first still surviving. And then even more languages will pop up, disrupting it further. And, even if it is the same, people may argue over this, how this is spelled, said, regional differences conflicting with each other... And war would be a hell-raiser for any world language.

A dictionary which is enforced by only words therein being accepted in educational facilities and a liguistics ministry to decide wether or not terms for new things are acceptable.

Latin-derived words in that sentance:

Dictus Arium = Place of Speech.

In- Fortis = Strong.

Ad Capio = To Take.

E Ducere = Out Leading.

Facilis = Easy.

Lingua Iste = Tongue Practicer.

Minor Ter = Lessly

Terminus = Limit

Latin seems to generally be used to avoid the creation of new words and turns of phrase, since it's a dead language. But that's only in science. I agree with Archi. :/

With less of an aerodynamic design to increase fatality rates, yes. It does.

Lemmings aren't suicidal:

[hide]

Stephen

It is a lemming, it's a Norway lemming.

Alan

They don't actually jump off cliffs.

Stephen

They don't jump off cliffs.

Clive

It was invented by Disney or somebody?

Stephen

Oh, dear me.

[Forfeit: Klaxons sound. Viewscreens flash the words "MYTH INVENTED BY DISNEY".]

Stephen

It was not invented by Disney, no. There were two myths about it, one that they commit mass suicide, the other that it was Disney who invented the myth.

Clive

Ah, right.

Stephen

In fact, they didn't. As early as 1908 in an . . . Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia, he talks about them throwing themselves off cliffs into the water.

Sean

They have done it. It was when their migratory path hit a cliff.

Stephen

They don't really migrate, but they're fantastic breeders. A mother can produce eighty in a year, and when the population swells, they have to move off to find places where they can eat.

Clive

So what are we saying, they do throw themselves off cliffs, or they don't throw themselves off?

Stephen

They don't. They don't at all.

Clive

They don't.

Stephen

The Disney film though, you're quite right, was completely faked. I mean they made this film called "White Wilderness"; they had to bus in lemmings from thousands of . . .

Clive

And they . . . they tossed them off the cliff did they?

Stephen

They did, well they sort of dropped them in front of camera in a close-up, in a rather pathetic attempt to do it. They're not any more suicidal than any other

Wholly incorrect

[hide]

- The French language has only a quarter of the number of words the English has. As a result, the French sometimes use French words, but they are mis-translated. In French, "Les people" means "Celebrities"; "Un brushing" means "Blow dry"; "Un relooking" means "Makeover"; and "Vaselin-ay" means "To flatter". French dictionaries do not include these words, but they are used all the time.

First lesson of life, Earth. Anything can kill you.

You haven't known fear until Emily explains how she would kill you with a marker in a childlike HAL voice.

Reiteration of this, you don't know fear until you imagine having your blood set on fire in your veins, being tortured, and stabbed repeatedly in all the worst places for about three hours until you finally crack and think about how that squirel just peed on you..

Happy four hundredth page, Back Room, may your suffering end soon.. Or long continue, depending on how much you like it.

Not Mods, Admins. Red names work much better with that whole theme. Though I suppose green has been implemented in the past. :-k

So this is one of the characters for my "planned" webcomic. Note: She has no arms, she moves the sleeves via telekinesis. OVERPOWERED PLOT DEVICE GO

D'you guys think I could get away with making a webcomic as of now, or do I need to improve my art skills some more before actually starting?

Maybe, not sure, I believe most people read webcomics for the plot.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?

Yeah, but if it has crappy art, most people will just pass over it thinking "oh, no effort there. lazy bastard." So my question is - is the art good enough for people to actually get to the plotline without vomiting?

I say the art's fairly good at the moment, but it needs a little bit of improvement. With a little practice you could probably get to Parallel Dementia levels, which aren't particularly impressive but convey the atmosphere of the story very well.

I think that the faces need a bit of work, mainly the mouths, because I can't usually tell if they are smilling or frowning or whatnot.

Other than that, if you think that you can portray all of the scenes with flair and emotion, then you are ready. :)

Think it was the guy behind xkcd that said something along the lines of "If you're going to have bad art, at least make the quality good". Or something like that.
