Heart of a Lion

13,034,431. This is the amount of experience required to achieve 99 in any skill. Accumulating that much experience can take a considerable amount of time even if one "buys" their skill cape. To celebrate such an accomplishment, drop parties are usually held by players that just broke beyond the 13 million experience point mark.

Why?

It doesn't make much sense that the player who invested plenty of time and gold should also be expected to drop items for the people in attendance. After grinding my ass off, I want someone to buy the cape for me, not be bombarded by colorful text.

If you don't want a party then don't have one. And others are no more obliged to pay for your cape than you are to throw a party.

I've never had a drop party for any of my 99s, and none of my friends expected it of me either. I have had friends who have hosted drop parties, and as far as I can tell, they're not "expected" to, but want to to celebrate. As you said, it can take a considerable amount of time to reach a 99. So why not celebrate it with a drop party?

Who doesn't like a party? :shades: But in all seriousness, getting a 99 is an accomplishment and should be treated as such with gifts and recognition. Giving free stuff out after such a long grind just seems completely backwards to me.

@Skill: Celebration is in order, but the new 99 should be on the receiving end, not the giving.

I never really had a 99 party, a few clan mates have come by to cheer in person as I level up, the rest say congratz through clan chat etc. then I just grab the cape and get on with the game. I got my 99 fm when no-one was online to even say gratz.

Tbh your insistence that there SHOULD be a party and you SHOULD get gifts for accomplishing it just pangs of greedy and wanting hand outs, afterall 99 isn't *that* much of a big deal these days. Maxed players are numerous, let alone the vast swathes of 99 in every skill and with all the metagame knowledge you can get most stats to 99 in under 2 months a pop if you just focus and do it.

I've never really had drop parties myself, only when "quitting" and dropping my stuff around banks for people to pick up.

Usually when getting a 99, I have a "gathering" of friends, none of which expect me or anybody else to host a drop party - they're so 2005 :shades:

@Sy_Accursed: I can see where my post "pangs of greed". But you're assuming too much. When I say gift, that doesn't necessarily imply expense. For example, at a 99 fishing party, an appropriate gift would be materials for Trawler Fishing or bait for Rocktail fishing. Purchasing the skill cape was just the first thing that came to mind.

@Mylez: I wish more players were like that. :)

@ghjkl: Friends should be more important than experience. Who cares how high your stats are if you have no one to play or talk with?

I'm going to go on a limb here and suggest that the OP has probably never once given a gift to a friend for reaching 99, even if he does try to claim he has. OP is like that kid we all knew in school where no one went to his birthday because he'd spend it complaining about how he didn't get any good stuff.

In my house, that kind of greed will get you the spicy keys. And nobody wants the spicy keys.

Two seconds, putting on my Ice Gloves to respond to this flame bait.

I'm going to hazard a guess and assume that you didn't read the entire first page. If you did, you would have picked up on how lighthearted I am by nature and about this topic. (But probably not because, you know, cynicism and laziness)

About three or four days ago I had a player tell me in clan chat about how she had just lost her entire bank playing hot cold. She had 1.2 million and gambled it all away. Knowing how discouraging a low stack can be for lower leveled players, I offered a 100k donation if she was willing to meet me in World 46 Varrock west bank as I was smithing steel plates at the time. She came, I told her not to gamble anymore, I was thanked, and she left. Haven't seen her in clan chat in a while come to think of it.

But I'm just an elaborate story teller, don't mind me.

I like the fact he says 'Op probably never once gave a gift to a friend FOR REACHING 99'

Your 'comeback' is This kid in my clan gambled their bank away so I gave em 100k and not seen em since.

Yeah that doesn't really refute his point at all and just suggests you're a bit of a mug who can be scammed outta cash with a good sob story.

When I was younger, I had a lot of friends that played. But seeing as how we were also kids without money for P2P (we even used computers at our local library), the situation I'm under attack for never came about. The example I gave was just one instance of my good will to another player considering that I just started playing again. The players I had on my Friend's List are now inactive or have forgotten about me. I don't blame them, because I don't remember them either.

It's a sad day on Tip.it that you're either a sap for being charitable or a phony. When you've played as long as I have, gold is as easy to part with as it is to earn.

I think people who hold parties after reaching level 99 are generally (but not necessarily) the more well-off types who, after spending lots of time working to 13034431, feel satisfied and happy, and want to share their joy by holding a drop party. It's not like they want renumeration for getting a 99 - no one really expects to be paid for levelling their own account - but rather that they just want others to be able to share in their happiness.

This post puts things into perspective quite nicely. Since I don't have a 99 yet, my rant was just an observation from the outside that made little sense up until now. I imagine that once I get my first 99, I too will also want to celebrate by being charitable since I'll have some money to throw around. :)

@Blaze: You misunderstand. I don't have a problem with people hosting drop parties. My question was why is it that players who grind to 99 are also responsible for dropping gifts. If it's their celebration, shouldn't they be on the receiving end? Mage cleared things up for me though.

Wait, why do you have a problem with people having drop parties when they reach level 99? How does that affect you? If people waste money on drop parties, that's their problem.

Because he believes getting a 99 obligates his friends to give him phr33 st0ff pl0x.

I'm trying to remember exactly how things worked out, but off the top of my head, of my 99's to date, I have always had a 'party' in so far as a gather to cheer me on as I get 99, and then a short after party in my POH for whoever has extra time. I think I have recieved gifts twice, both times in the form of 99k gold to cover the cost of the cape. Of these two, I am up only 99k total because I returned the favor to one friend when he got his first 99 after buying me my cape (so it was only fair I should return the favor), and if the other friend ever gets another 99, the gift will be given to them as well. In my circle, its just a way of saying that since your such a great friend, I would like to contribute to your awesome progress by buying you your first cape.

Some people do have drop parties I suppose (none of them being people I know), but I don't think its really expected.

I achieved my first 99 today in strength. It was also my 1300th total level. For the people that took the time to congratulate me, I held a drop party of items totaling 13M.

I know you think the idea is backwards, but to be honest I don't care. Play how you want to play, celebrate how you want to celebrate, just don't expect anyone to go out of their way to be nice to you when you level up.

99 dungeoneering achieved, thanks to everyone that celebrated with me!
