Just a heads up; we won’t be releasing another batch of character names this week. This is primarily due to the fact we’re focusing our attention on mitigating the current service disruptions.

Batch two is announced:

 

Character Name Clean-Up – Second Batch

 

In just one day we’ll be releasing the second batch of character names: beginning D-H.

Head back in-game on Wednesday 13th August at 1pm BST and select ‘change name’ in the Hero interface to secure the name you’ve had your eye on.

 

The list of character names will be published here and on the forums at the same time that the names are released. Check the list out for a little inspiration, but bear in mind that it will quickly become out of date as character names are taken.

 

We're publishing the list simultaneously with the release, as we have disabled the name checking function on the website in order to improve performance.

 

We're always looking for ways to improve things, so in response to your feedback, we’ve tweaked the process related to changing your character name.

 

For the first 24 hours, players who want to change their name will require a minimum total level of 1,000 to do so.

This will allow players who have invested time in the game to grab the name they want before newer accounts.

Once the 24 hours have passed all members will be able to have a go. Bond redemption will not be restricted based on level.

 

We've also been working hard to optimise the performance of the website to make things even easier for you.

I'm glad they did the total level lockout, it prevents black market selllers from hoarding names right off the bat.

At first I thought they locked out lower accounts for our benefit, then I kept reading.

 

Silly me.

I was genuinely expecting at least a month for Jagex to figure out tweaks and get on with it.  This is a lightning-fast response by the usual standards :P.

I still disagree with a total level line :/

Now to wait next week for the 'K's.

You cannot change your name with a bond if you aren't 1000+.

 

 

 

Just to clear up another point for you guys. 

Redeeming a bond will NOT allow accounts to bypass the 1000 level requirement!

 The line in the first post of this thread just means we are not restricting accounts from buying bonds at this time.

Agreed. It is good though that they jumped right on when people immediately presumed it would circumvent it.

Worded it badly or were in it for the cash and quickly decided to do some fire fighting/back pedalling when they saw the PR win of fixing the name issue going down the toilet as their not-as-dumb-as-wed-like market spotted the obvious work around which allowed Jagex to profiteer?

That is for general things like selling for cash or exchanging for RuneCoins/Keys/ It will not work to change name if you don't have at least 1000 total.

Jagex have a track record of continually wording things in an extremely poor manner.

How does redeeming via a bond work? I have one right now. If I redeem it for a name change before the names are released, what happens? Do I have to choose a name right then, does it reset my name choice on the main website, or is there a thing in-game that sticks around as a sort of "credit"?

You get the ability to name change and is valid for one name change. It is then used up whenever you change your name.

Is there a way to access it from in-game at that point?

Redeeming a bond grants you an "early" name change if you are still within the waiting period until your next free one.

 

To redeem a bond for this purpose, simply:

1) Click the extras button

2) Scroll down on the right hand side until you find 'Character name change.'

3) Click on it and confirm.  Note: If you haven't entered your PIN you will be prompted for it/may have to repeat the procedure.

 

To change your name in-game, click the 'Hero' tab (or press F1, assuming that you have the default settings), then go to the summary tab and click 'Change Name' under your character name, in the middle of the screen.

Eh, well I'm irked. I was waiting at launchtime for the name I wanted, which is on a level 524 clearly never P2P account I haven't seen log in since I added it, but it wasn't freed.

EDIT my second choice is also "taken" but doesn't even appear on the highscores and isn't offensive or game-related. Bullshit.

I was in game and ready to go...and what happens? The system quits...I lost my chance to get 'Haseo'.

 

It shouldn't hurt this much but it does....

Keep in mind they could play with pm off/friends as well.

At those levels, I can only assume they were "lucky" enough to have logged in within the furthest reaches of the given time.

The other doesn't appear at all on hiscores, but doesn't say it's an unknown player when added in-game. -.-

I've seen several of those too, yet they weren't on the list of names that were released today.  I wonder what keeps Jagex from releasing them.

Two possibilities:

 

1) Banned name/Recently banned account.

2) Has been an active member for past two years.

 

 

I still don't get why jagex set that criteria at two years. That is a rather long time and you only needed to be a member for one month.

They could be banned, but if they have been an active member, then they would still show up on your friends list when you attempted to add them.  The two years was probably to provide incentive for people to buy a month of membership and protect their name for a longer period/with less effort.  Who knows.
