bjbj1991
Are sports/PE important in our schools? The reasion why I am asking this is last year when I was in a public school still we had 5 full time teachers dedicated to PE every year the kids would tear the equipment up so they would have to practicly buy everything again. When I left they were forced to fire I think 10 teachers due to bugget cuts (My math teacher and english teacher both lost their jobs I think becuace I dont see them on the website anymore, but none of the PE teachers got the boot), every class had atleast 3 student computers but most were never conected to the net and I think some were over 5 years old so they were worthless. Most of the kids that I ever did manage to talk to (most hatted me because I couldnt do spots) said that they didnt care about their education and though that every kid that plays sports all the time will become a millinare. I fail to see the ultimate importance in PE excpecialy since we are I think the 3rd stuppedist states in America and America itself is fairly low compared to other developed nations. pennywise
Well P.E. is for people to get some excercise once in a while, but sports during P.E. are sometimes pointless because the new equipment just costs more and more money which means more budget cuts. But then it is fun to play football with all of your friends... bjbj1991
Well PE is infact the main reasion why I had no friends at school. Also the 2.5 mile bikeride too and from school kept me inshape (not to mention a diet that doesnt consist of 50% Macdolnolds(that how you spell it?)). To me PE drained 5 extrateachers trom my school(including my 2 favorite), added a number of memorys that I would like to have forgoten, and wasted 5 hours of my life every week that I could have been reading or doing homework. With the exception of the pain I would gladly break a leg next time or something to get out.
Shadd
I would say sports is important because it prepares you for the next level of play, college and onward. But physical education was memorable when I took it. It's suppose to do what the title says but virtually everyone just does there own thing in the GYM or wherever the class is held. unknownmasterofnothing
In my middle and high school, I had one gym teacher for each. In middle school, I loved it, so much sports, it's competetive and fun. But then in high school, the teacher taught more than did excercise, we learned more about health, training programs, circuits. We did weight training, and dancing... And he was forced by the city to do a sport a year! O man, he chose sports that you wouldn't usually play. I guess he thought it was beneficial somehow, since sports like basketball, you can always play. We played team handball the 1st yr, whiffleball the 2nd yr, badminton the 3rd yr. Worse of all we had to do dancing. It was most of the yr, we did the tango, salsa, square dancing, and so much others... Also tae bo. I'd say students need P.E to keep in shape, It should teach how to stay in shape, when you're not in school anymore.
Invidious
Are sports/PE important in our schools? Are you asking whether the government of whichever country you live in considers PE important? Maybe you should supply which country you reside in currently? I'm guessing this was aimed towards America as most of the forumers here seem to be Americans... From what I know, school/educational legislations differ drastically in each State/City/County in America. Perhaps you should check with the nearest governmental office for details on what the current laws are(Information should be avalible in the form of pamphlets). EDIT* I forgot to mention that Private Schools are completely different from public schools. If you are currently enrolled in a private educational facility then I suggest you ask your Dean of Education for details. Your Dean of Admissions would also have that information at hand. ____
Sports was perhaps the least important aspect of my school. Although nothing else was really above it either, everything just all around sucked.
Bpob
I don't mean to sound ignorant, but P.E in schools, which I think it what your talking about I think is a godsend. Its a period off where you can muck around and play games with your mates, and forget about the calculus test next period or whatever. I dont know what its like in America, but here in N.Z. the amount you have to do P.E. goes down the higher year level you are. Here you can do P.E. as an assesed subject that can go towards your university entrance etc etc. It may be different for you, but the main thing to do is try and enjoy it. If you go into P.E. with such a bad attitude as yours, then yes, it will be trash. But try thinking that its a chance to take a break and have some fun, then you'll be into it. In a few years time you'll be wishing you could play a game of sports with a bunch of other people your age

Necromagus
I hardly found P.E. more fun. At best it was a break from tedious classes, at worst it was a pointless reason to stay at school/come in early, since the lessons always seemed to be scheduled at the very beginning or the very end of the day. From my first to my fifth year I had two hours each week. Indoors it was all sorts of stuff, mostly volleyball/basketball/football. Outdoors it was mostly softball/field hockey/football. I could care less for it to be honest, just seems like a waste of time... insane
I loved it - it broke the monotony of the classroom routine. I hated it if it was before last period though, then you were all sweaty for your last classes :P

Bubsa
I think it's vital. For some school kids, of which the number of them is increasing every day, P.E. is the only sort of exercise they ever do. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
RoyalKnight
I loved gym. Football, soccer, basketball, handball, european handball, etc. were fun as hell. Even cross country was fun :) Only period that I looked forward to during my elementary days. Probably because I am more athletic than those who really it. The only part that I hated in gym was the running part; we had to run 10 kms (about 6 miles) and I can tell you that for some one who doesn't sport that is torchure! But when you don't give in to the pains and the nausea, you'll get there, exhausted but damn satisfied. In general I loved every moment I was in school, wonderful teachers and great fellow students. assassin_696
I think it's vital. For some school kids, of which the number of them is increasing every day, P.E. is the only sort of exercise they ever do. Absolutely, even at my school, which has a reasonable rugby and sporting tradition, an increasing number guys my age are unfit. For some of them it'll be the only exercise they get all week. If it wasn't for that 3 or so hours of mandatory exercise a week I reckon many of them would develop serious health problems, like diabetes. I'm lucky in that at my school the sports facilities are great, and there are loads of different sports to choose from, but if all your equipment has been ruined, what happened to the virtues of a good old run? Or pressups, situps etc. Personally I love school sports, it's introduced me to loads of sports I might never play after school (water-polo, volleyball, climbing) in P.E. sessions, and I can play the current sport that's in season for my school team (rugby september to Christmas, hockey Christmas to Easter, and tennis during the summer term, swimming throughout). The games session alone is something to look forward to towards the end of a long week, and then there's all the afterschool training as well. In short, I don't think i'd go to a school that didn't have a decent sports program, i know i'm lucky enough to be able to have that choice if i wanted, but to me it's as much a part of school life as exams and the academia.
