It's hard for me to describe how the vocals sound. The only words I can find to describe them are "pushed" or "forced." The vocalist will often have a red face after a line. It is singing, not screaming or yelling, and it sounds good.

I'm not exactly sure if this is what you're looking for, but there's a couple songs in Origin of Symmetry by Muse where their singer is just guuuulping for breath (Micro Cuts for instance)

While I agree that Linkin Park is only a mediocre band, Chester's vocals are far from awful.

I don't know if it fits your description, but AC/DC vocalist Dave Evans forces a lot his voice while singing.

 

 

 

He even press his jaw against his chest.
