RuneScape only for 13+

I was trying to create an account for some little kid of 7 in my neighborhood today, then I saw this: I had to tell his age before I could make his account. I just filled in '12 and under'.

Then I got this message

Since when was this? I think it's a good thing, but I don't think kids below 13 will stop making accounts right now.

I'm 16 myself btw.

There is method to Jagex's madness :)

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)1 is a United States federal law, forming Chapter 15, Section 6501, of the United States Code.

The act, effective April 21, 2000, applies to the online collection of personal information by persons or entities under U.S. jurisdiction from children under 13 years of age. It details what a website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children's privacy and safety online including restrictions on the marketing to those under 13. Similar laws exist in other countries.

Ostensibly because of the cost incurred in complying with the regulation, one of COPPA's largest impacts was to cause a number of websites that catered to children to shut down entirely even though the required website structure to comply with COPPA is relatively light. A number of other general-audience websites stopped offering services to children at all. There has been little actual legal action taken against a website operator for COPPA violations. Much of the time, people under 13 years of age simply create a fake identity or lie about their age for use on these websites.

Basically Jagex have a legal responsibility to do this.

:P Its been around for a fair old time.

It isn't gonna stop anyone from signing up at all. It would however be smarter if they made them put the year they were born. Most kids probably won't want to try and figure out what year they would have to put to be 13 or older. I know that stopped me many times when I was younger :P

Maturaty level in runescape might go up a little o.O

It's been there for a long time. I even believe it was in the Terms and Conditions when I started playing RS-- they're now just making you choose before making an account.

It won't stop people from making an account if they're under 13 years of age, but that's the best they can do to comply with the laws.

Maybe they have to do it because they have some servers in the USA?

Anyone notice that you're supposed to be 13 to sign up to these forums aswell?

Exactly. JaGEx can't get in trouble if the kids lie, but if JaGEx doesn't give the option to tell the truth, they can be sued.
