Bubsa
I'd stick with the PC. For one, you have experience with them. Secondly, by not having a console now, it seems a bit of a waste to invest in a new one. And third of all, you just can't beat the keyboard/mouse set up for a quick FPS ;) This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
Anesthesia
If you need an AGP card you could get the 7800GS. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

Nadril
If your going to get a decent upgrade, I would strongly recomend an AMD athalon 64, and as well, a motherboard with PCI-E support (don't get PCI or AGP, can't go up that great).
Ks_Jeppe
Sadly, i've had bad experience in the past with AMD, and great with Intel... I feel more secure and better off when i'm sitting on an Intel... :P Will look into the PCI-E support though...
Nadril
ok :). Go with PCI-E though, trust me. You will regret it later if you buy a brand new AGP/PCI motherboard (they are going out).

Stuart_G
A couple of questions. How much do you have to spend on this and do you intend to re-use current case/monitor/speakers/keyboard/mouse or any parts out of your current computer?

How much do you have to spend on this and do you intend to re-use current case/monitor/speakers/keyboard/mouse or any parts out of your current computer?I'll be re-using everything 'cept for the MB, graphics card and proccesor... i'll add an extra 512 MB ran though, and a new bigger harddisk... Also i'm considering getting a new keyboard and mouse, but that i dont really need help with :D

Mr_Putter
Hey Nadril, how do you know if you're graphics card/motherboard is PCI, or PCI-e, or AGP? Since I'm probably buying a new graphics card in a few months, and want to know if I can...

Ks_Jeppe
So what was your ideal budget for this upgrade?Around $750 I think... Maybe slightly more, but i'd like to keep it around that :)
indy500fan
emachines are going to start coming with a pci express 16 slot on their motherboard. read here. i know emachines arent a very popular brand of computer, but ive bought one for my parents, one for my sister, one for my grandparents, and one for a friend. (not paying for them, telling them what to buy :P .) they have all been more than happy with price vs performance. they arent the fastest, but you pay $400 for a computer (comes with monitor printer and everything) throw in a gig of ram extra, add a video card and your system isnt half bad. plus you dont have to worry about all the problems with new motherboards... Stuart_G
Intel Pentium 4 630 - $169.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116198 Gigabyte GA-8I945P-PRO Motherboard - $122.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128293 eVGA Geforce 6800GS - $179.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130267 SeaSonic 430W Power Supply - $96.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817151023 Kingston ValueRAM 512MB - $37.26 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141424 Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB - $83.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144309 Total - $688.24 All those parts should be compatible and work fine with each other. You might notice i added a PSU to that list. Why? Because PCI-e is a tad more power hungry than AGP so it needs the extra power. That and most PCI-e motherboards have 24 pin power connectors these days. So yeah, all those parts should work fine together, it all came under your $750 budget and hopefully these parts will last you for a few years to come. If your unsure about the parts i listed or want to know something else, just ask and hopefully ill be able to help you out.
indy500fan
the evga geforce 6800GS is $179, the evga geforce 6800 is just 99. the gs would be better, if that extra performance is worth it, go for it.
Stuart_G
Here's something thats better than that 6800GS. eVGA Geforce 7600GT - $189.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130283 Another thing i noticed was that both the 6800GS and 7600GT have $15 rebates. So if you bother going about the rebate, the 6800GS ends up costing $164 and the 7600GT costs $174. Hope i havent confused you after all that  If i did, what im suggesting now is that you get the 7600GT over the 6800GS.

Ks_Jeppe
Thanks a lot Stuart :D Just one question, will i be able to use my 512MB PC2100 ram in that MB you posted? If i remember right you can run faster ram in a slower MB, but not the other way around?
Stuart_G
That would be true, the faster stick of ram will slow down to the speed of the slower stick of ram. So yes, that ram i listed before should work fine with the slower ram you already have but it will just run at lower speeds. But since you are upgrading, it may be worth taking a look at something like this. CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM - $78.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145526 It may be worth considering that ram. It's running at DDR2 speeds, so it can make the most of your motherboards DDR2 slots and the extra bit of speed it supplies never hurts  To recap, here is what i think you should consider getting now. Intel Pentium 4 630 - $169.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116198 Gigabyte GA-8I945P-PRO ATX Intel Motherboard - $122.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128293 eVGA Geforce 7600GT - $189.00 (-$15 rebate = $174) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130283 SeaSonic S12-430 430W Power Supply - $96.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817151023 CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM - $78.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145526 Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB - $83.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144309 Total - $728.98 ($713.98 with $15 rebate on video card) Im pretty confident with the parts ive listed, but it may be worth getting a second opinion on them. blade995
Looks like a good computer. You could save some money getting a cheaper power supply like this one. Antec TruePowerII 480watt $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 8171039303 or Antec TruePowerII 430watt $65 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817103928
Stuart_G
Yeah, either one of those would do fine. The one i picked was one of the cheapest with an actual 24 pin connector, thus the higher price. But i took a look at that 430W Antec TruePowerII, and it seems like it would do perfectly fine. So once again! Intel Pentium 4 630 - $169.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819116198 Gigabyte GA-8I945P-PRO ATX Intel Motherboard - $122.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128293 eVGA Geforce 7600GT - $189.00 (-$15 rebate = $174) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130283 Antec TruePowerII 430watt - $65 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817103928 CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM - $78.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145526 Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB - $83.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822144309 Total - $706.99 ($691.99 with $15 rebate on video card) Hopefully you like the look of it all. Ks_Jeppe
Thanks a lot stuart! :D I'll be looking into it a bit more, but most likely thats the system i'll go with... However, i believe my current power support would be able to do, i'll check on that some time tomorrow though, just to make 100% sure :) Owe you one, thanks a lot :D
