Death / Thrash / Origional Metal Bands

Featured Replies

How could you guys like any kind of bands named like "Carcass" or "Blood Bath" or "Cannibal Corpse?" I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but seriously =|. You have to have something messed up in the head if you listen to that disgusting "music" if you ask me. Can someone please explain to me how that can be pleasing to the ears? I'm trying to be open to other styles of music I just can't comprehend how you could like bands like these.

for one cannical corpes has the best bassits in metal

because im a bassist and in my opinion, you cannot judge bassists in metal simply because metal isn't based upon groove like all over genres of music. Bass is a groove orientated instrument, when you say a bassist is good, you judge them by two things: groove and technicality. For one, Cannibal Corpse is a metal band so we cannot comment on Alex Webster's groove. On the other hand, Cannibal Corpse doesn't have very technical passages at all (making them a fairly typical death metal band if it wasn't for their stylistic vocals and themes). Ofcourse we can't completely judge his technicality but seeing as Cannibal Corpse is his only band, we can make a pretty safe judgement that he isn't the best bassist in metal.

For technicality, John Myung of Dream Theater or Lars Norberg from Spiral Architect win hands down with maybe Steve Digiorgio trailing behind with his sloppy fretless playing. John Myung being in a rock/metal band has some songs where he grooves and though he isn't very good at improvisation, he tries so you can logically say John Myung is the best bassist in Metal. He certainly isn't the best in the world or even close however.

k? thx

ok for one your like fighting with your self, 2 your gonna say hes not the best because hes not in more then 1 band?!?!, i have seen him live, must bands bassit really suck im not gonan lie, he plays very fast, very good energry, MOVES AROUND, can play on the mvoe very well, idk how you can fight about this

1. ?

2. I said, I can't judge his technicality or groove due to him not being in more than 1 band, if he was like the Green Day bassist who plays in a jazz trio I could judge his groove. Since Alex Webster only plays in Cannibal Corpse, you can make an educated assumption that he's not very good due to him not trying to make a distinction between himself and other bassists.

Most metal bassists root note which doesn't say a lot about skill, so you whoring a bassist that does nothing but root note means that I can quite easily say he isn't the best simply because there is no way of telling if he is the best or not.

Therefore, you can make an educated assumption that John Myung, Steve Digiorgio and Lars Norberg are all better since in their bands, they have a lot more work to do as bassist compared to Alex Webster.

As you can hopefully see, im not saying Alex Webster is necessarily a bad bassist, rather he is potentially a bad bassist just like he is potentially a good bassist, you can't tell but when you've got bassists like John Myung dancing around a jazz chord progression in 7/8 timing, you can make a good assumption that John Myung is much better.

A bassist being able to play fast is pointless, with practice, anyone can play fast, that's not what being a musician is about. Being able to play your part properly and being able to express yourself through your instrument is the point
