Tournament: Best movie of the 50s. Change of plan, read OP.

Featured Replies

Alright, the greatest movie of the first part of the 80's is over. Time for a new tournament. This time we're going to do best movie of the period of 1950 till 1959.

For those who don't know. Yes, they did make movies before THE GODFATHER. The 50s is the decade of Marlon Brando, James Dean, Grace Kelly, Nicholas Ray, Alfred Hitchcock and Akira Kurosawa. But also the end of the Itallian Neo-Realism in the early 50s and the start of a new era: the French New Wave, in the late 50s which was an amazing influence to modern favorites as Scorsese, Spielberg, De Palma and Coppola.

In the first part of the 80s tournament everybody could name as much movies as they wanted. We're going do it Philly style this time. Everybody can choose to add a list of 10 or 20 movies. That means no lists of 5, 15, 12 or 7. movies. At the end the 20 movies with the most votes are going to be in the tournament. The rest of the tournament is going to be the same the 80s tournament.

The rules have changed a little bit. Otherwise we couldn't keep the tournament.

Keep it friendly and have fun.

PS. Phil, could you de-sticky the other Tournament thread and Sticky this one? Thanks. :)

[done - Phil]

Alrighty. After a while we're going to start this tournament. There are 17 movies automatically qualified for the tournament. 16 of these had 2 or more votes. One of them is one of the 27 movies with only 1 vote. The movie with the higest rating on IMDB is added to the 16 automatically qualified. Otherwise it's not possible to keep everything going smoothly. You will vote for the other 26 movies with 1 vote, and 13 of them will qualify them for the tournament.

1. The Blob (1958) 6.1 (IMDB)

Behind the movie you can see the rating it got on IMDB. There are three movies with the highest rating. And that's 8.5 (Don't shoot me because they're movies I suggested, it wasn't 'planned' or something). So out of those three movies the one with the most votes is going to continue.

How were you doing the seeds? I can make up the next round

'A rebel without a cause' had me and my friend in tears, watching the begining in media was the funniest thing i've ever seen, probably the most stereotypical showing of teenagers EVER.

We were literally in tear's when he said, "so, you were drunk, we get it kid! but why in god's name did you have to shoot that bag full of puppy's?!" oh sweet jesus.

If we have 15 movies left, shouldn't we add one, so that there will be 16? Then you could go 16-8-4-2-1. I don't know how we would choose which one to add though, so I guess this is the only way.

I don't feel right choosing one to discard, seeing as how I haven't seen all of them. Of the ones I have seen I would choose Sunset Boulevard, so I guess I'll just make that my choice.

We could do the same thing except vote one of the ones who were just beaten back in.

I choose Ben-Hur

Get rid of Rear Window.

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

So we were just supposed to discard one movie this round right? There's 15 movies left, maybe we should add one to make it 16, and then it would work better.

EDIT: When I looked at my other post to see which one I chose to discard I noticed I said the exact same thing there, so you can just ignore this :P .

I'm going for All About Eve, I think. There's still a Wilder movie in the tournament, so.
