This post is a great example to help you all understand my point just above.

Freddie Adu is a great player, and I absolutely love the guy. He's modest, sportsmanlike and athletic. I like him much more than the overrated Landon Donovan. That being said, I don't think Adu and Pele even belong in the same sentence. Pele is the greatest ever, and for good reason. Adu has yet to play a significant international match. Maybe in 15 to 20 years we can assess Adu's performance.

 

 

 

On a side note, never believe media hype until it's backed up. This is what happened to the US national team (cover of SI, etc) and most of it turned out to be hot air.

What irks me is how often adjectives such as "world" are misused in American sports. Like the winners of the NBA Finals are called "WORLD Champions" or something else like that. Pretty arrogant methinks.

 

 

 

What's even more arrogant is when the rest of the world automatically assumes that all Americans are like that.

I think Americans don't like soccer partially because of one thing, not enough body contact.

 

 

 

I mean just look at American football and basketball, Americans love watching body contact, especially with African-American athletes.

Two points I'd like to make on this statement. One, the FIFA rankings had the US at 5 overall. Although the ranking system makes about as much sense as the BCS, that isn't the media doing anything, the world's governing body of soccer had the US team hyped up. Second, the article in SI was all about inciting fan interest.

 

 

 

About the topic in general. America is still the haven for a handful of major sports. Baseball, basketball, football, golf, hockey, tennis (could be wrong here, don't know much about tennis :) ) and extreme sports like snowboarding and skateboarding. The fact that all of these leagues can be moderately to extremely sucessful in America, and that the place to be for the elite in these sports is America shows that the USA still has a pretty strong hold on world sports. Just wait until the next summer Olympics, you'll see :D

You're right--the FIFA rankings had a large impact on perception of the US national team. I think that FIFA needs to restructure its system, because the ranking of 2 for the Czech Republic was off, too.

Yes, the United States is horrible at sports, that's why we won the second most medals at Torino and the most medals in Athens.

 

 

 

The basketball team that played in Athens wasn't that great, the all star teams were better. Some players didn't join. Some had personal problems and others were worried about security.

They're all dangerous and all that in their own way, so I'm not saying the players are "less manly" than others, but that's just the way I view it.

And has anyone also realized that, thus being so hard to score, how ELECTRIFIED the crowd gets when one is scored. Do you see how AMAZING half of these goals are. Lookie here, im not a big soccer/international football fan, however i am truly amazed by the world cup, and i believe it's a SHAME that international football isnt as highly celebrated as it is in other countries. If more emphasis was put onto international football, then the kids of america would look at the game and say "Hey, i want to be like that guy" or "Hey this game is really good". I think that the US National team needs to get that SUPERSTAR calibur player. That Ronaldo, that Pele-esqe type of player. A seed needs to planted amongst the youth of america if the US ever wants to be a dominant sports country and it HAS TO BE DONE NOW.

And no, I don't like to see "body-contact" between African Americans. It's part of the sport. I actually do enjoy soccer, on a big scale. I probably agree with most of you when I say, the MLS sucks. Maybe a tournament every year between the 50 states' best players to get people into soccer? An idea me and my cousin came up with. What do you guys think? I think it'd be great and fun. It'd make people want to watch soccer. Have like,

Huh? Are you stating Ronaldino is fat? He's got a 6-pack where we can only dream of ;)

 

And why in the world would we think all Americans are the same? By stressing stuff like that you only encourage people to think that way. I do think, and I think I have a right to say so since I've been in the US three times, that there is a significant resemblence among countrysiders and among city people. I find city people to be a lot less patriotic, but more open-minded, though that's not always good of course. In western Europe the difference between people from the city and from the country isn't that big at all, since the distance between cities and villages is never more than a few miles.
