I've been trying to learn an instrument online, or even get a feel for music but had no progress. For all of you who can play an instrument, how did you learn?

 

 

 

Looking to either play guitar or drums... \

In band class, I learned a note at a time. Then I play songs with the few notes. Then learn more notes, and play harder notes. and then it continues like that. Playing songs until they get harder.

STICK WITH GUITAR.

 

 

 

I've been playing guitar for about a year, no lessons, and I rule 8-) Not trying to brag either.

 

 

 

I just sit down and look up some tabs for songs I like and play them. Learn scales online also, because if you learn solely by tabs, you won't be able to be creative on guitar and thats no fun :(

 

 

 

But yeah like I said, just sit down with a guitar and woodcut on runescape or fish or something lmfao. Thats pretty much how I got so good :oops:

 

 

 

Edit- some good songs to start to learn are simple riffs from songs like Iron Man, Smoke on the Water, or Come as you Are

I've tried guitar, but when i look at tabs, i dont understand how you tell how long to wait before changing chords and how they work.

Where can you learn scales and tabs online? Cuz I can't afford a guitar, atleast not yet, but I might down the road, and I might as well learn while I wait.

its best if you learn with a guitar, because your fingers will hurt like hell if you learn online, and then start once you have already learned some advanced stuff. You need to start with the basics, on a fret so you can break in your fingers.

 

 

 

First i suggest learning the A Magor scale and A minor scale. Then the G, F, D, A and C Scales.

 

 

 

Then start learning more ways to play the scales, as well as bar/power chords. Then move on to 1/3's and 1/5's.

Pick up an instrument, listen to a song you like, try and play it by ear.

 

 

 

Oh, and practice a whole lot.

my parents made me play the piano... took me 2 years to get really good ( i play it since i'm 8), picked up the guitar in less then a year,. right now i'm trying to play violin...... doesn't really work if you don't own one and your friend lives far away..

 

 

 

but there was this point where I thought that I didn't make any progress at all and wanted to quit. i didn't, i guess i'm way too ambitious for that. just stick with it and when you passed that point ..........

If you want to eventually learn multiple instruments, then start with piano. And I mean hardcore - theory, notation, chords, etc. Then after you've mastered piano, you can pick up any instrument in a week.

I learn the drums, and have been for 2 years and 3 months. If I were you, I would try and learn the drums as they are easy to improve and get started on, there is more need for drummers than say pianists or guitarists, and it's a great way of killing some time and some unneeded stress!

I've played the drums for about 2 and a half years now, I'm 100% self taught. To get started I just learnt basic songs and then gradually progressed until I had enough basics to start learning more complex stuff.

Ay Lageris, I learned drums myself too. Practice makes perfect, as they say.

So you want to learn the guitar? Find a song you like, nothing too hard, don't jump straight in with Eruption :P Make sure that the song has a fairly simple riff. (I'm presuming you know the notes of the guitar, if not learn those fully) Look up the tabs on the internet and play the riff again and again until you've mastered it. Repeat, gradually increasing the difficulty of the riffs or songs. For chords...buy a book, chords on the internet i don't think are that great. You might be able to find something though.

i know how to play a lil of each. the guitar is easer for me, i learned how to play a song on there (twinkle twinkle little star :oops: ) within 45min-1 hour. the drums takes more time to learn. I stopped the drums because of my instructer, but ima retake them. my personal advice would be to take lessons from an instructor rather than online.

yeah, I taught myself songs from listening to them by ear. it's really not so hard. i've been playing for 4 years, but then again i never really play my guitar anymore.

 

 

 

if i listen to a song that sounds kind of easy i can figure the whole thing out in 10 minutes.

I'm learning the guitar atm. I find that it helps to jump in at the deep end and try and learn something really difficult to begin with. By doing that, and have a few easier things going at the same time, I find that I notice how much I improve far more, and I don't get bored because I've still not mastered whatever it is I find hard at the time.

I play bass and I'm completely self taught.

 

 

 

Make sure that you eventually learn how to construct scales and modes and read music as they will help your playing a great deal.

 

 

 

And make sure you have fun!

I was in the same situation when I took up Trumpet. I couldn't blow into it right. I gave up. Don't give up! #-o

Here is my suggestion:

 

 

 

1st: Look up a music theory guide online in order to learn how to read chords (can get quite confusing... in fact pm me if you have questions and I will help find the answer)

 

 

 

2nd: You looked up online how to play, so you should know where the notes are. Play each chord according to the guide.

 

 

 

3rd: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.....

The best way to lean an instrument is to learn another instrument.

 

i started out playing the recorder...and i was horrible..so i quit

 

Now i play the trumpet..and i rock!
