June 27, 200620 yr Author If all infinaties are equal (which they are because they are all infinate) then: There are infinate numbers, and because there are infinate numbers there are also infinate prime numbers. If that is true (which it is) than that means there are an = numbers of numbers (#'s) as there are prime numbers. # of numbers = # of prime numbers The problem is that you assume that infinity takes a particular value. Something cannot actually be infinity, but it can tend to infinity, which means it is larger than any value you assign it. Or, another way of thinking about it is, infinity (infinities?) are very large, but you don't know how large. So you can't really compare different infinities. That's why operations such as infinity minus infinity, infinity divided by infinity, etc. are undefined. What Im saying with the prime number, all number thing is that science the number of numbers is unlimated (infinate) that there are also infinatly more numbers that are not prime than prime yet both are infinatys so both are equal as best as we can understand (make sense? probaly not. but infinaty=infinaty+5=infinaty*googleplex) for anyone who dosent no gooleplex is "1" followed by "google" zeros(not the search engine). google is "1" with a hundred 0's.
June 27, 200620 yr There is no infinity, its only a theory. Keep counting. Tell me when your done. :wink:but i could never reach infinity could i? i would eventualy die if i counted my whole life, and then the chain would end. That is why infinity in reality is only a theory, can you show me something infinit? (Circles dont count, they stop and start somewhere) That dosn't make any sense. If you could show something that is infinit, it wouldn't be infinit because it stopped.... The question you should be asking you self isn't if numbers are infinit but when they stop. When do they stop? Would they stop at 10^a million millions? Its just not logical for numbers to stop.

June 27, 200620 yr Well yeah, you can't show infinity, but it can be understood mathematically. Okay, so I'm gonna not be lazy and show you what I'm talking about when infinity doesn't really mean infinity. Lets find an nth term here... Let n approach infinity... n! / (n+1)! = (infinity)! / (infinity+1)! Which equals infinity / infinity. Looks like infinity / infinity, which is undefined, right? Not quite. (n+1)! = (n+1) (n!) So... n! / [(n+1)! * (n)! ] = 1 / (n+1)! As n appraches infinity, the term equals 1 / (infinity) which equals 0. So, that's what I mean. Saying that those two infinite series are equal just means you're failing to simplify.
June 27, 200620 yr So, that's what I mean. Saying that those two infinite series are equal just means you're failing to simplify. Infinite is a region, it's not a specific number. ^The most disturbing signature on Tip.it^Last.fm|HELLY KAYLA!|Oh the mehagurtz!|#Siencemakers"they care less about their spelling mistakes then I." - Lionheart"apinagez... let me
June 27, 200620 yr Infinity is not a number, it's a symbol that denotes an unbounded limit. You can't compare two 'infinites' with each other. Though, when talking about set theory, like mad4u689 said, there are different 'grades' of infinity to consider, namely countable infinite and uncountable infinite. June 27, 200620 yr There is no infinity, its only a theory. Infinity isn't a theory, it's a mathmatical concept. Its also a theory... its impossibel to reach infinity of anything. Yeah, but it works in math using calculus. So mathematically, it's alright. Math is something humans created, so in nature, its not real. :P math is perfectly real. it represents objects that are real. for example you have a square that is 4 cm on each side. math represents the square, which is real.

That's like saying that my consciousness isn't real; it only represents my bodily and corporeal form. Of course it's real, or as real as any subject or discipline, but it just doesn't take corporeal form most of the time. Whoever mentioned the Fibonacci sequence was probably trying to suggest that there are mathematical concepts that take form in nature. For example, the spiral of a seashell follows this sort of mathematical pattern. It's not a coincidence... it's just that mathematics is a way to describe the world and then better understand it (and can also be interesting purely in its theoretical uses!) Infinity is not a number. It is not a theory. It is a mathematical concept, and a very real one that does have real world applications, and one very important for calculus and much of mathematics beyond. Everybody hug and spread the love :D

But tecnicly, infinities are all the same in that they are ALL unlimated. Also, because of the nature of infinatiy, infinaty -1 = infinaty as it dosent matter how much you remove from unlimated it is still unlimated. Unlimated is a PROPERTY not a value, and it is the property that is truly be compared by the "=" sign.

June 28, 200620 yr Also, while 'Pi' does have infinite digits, 'pie' is not infinitely edible. It truely has an end. Couldn't help myself
