First of all: I hate idiots who think they're good drummers because they can do a solo. It's just not right. A drum is in the first place always an instrument to indicate the beat and rhytm of the song, not an instrument to be played on solo. A band needs a drum, just as much as a drum needs a band.

 

Also, aside from being able to lead the band, I think a drummer needs to be the more or less silent, intelligent type of the band. The mysterious person hidden behind his machine.

you said it. I show it. Maybe not fastest or "wickedest" drummer in the world but keeps it all together more than well which in my opinion is a skill that a good drummer should have. (check the drum break in 2:56)
