jayc3399
Thank you all for taking the time to open my topic, hopefully you have commented. Recently my parents blocked me from Runescape and they say if I get a job I get it back, and I've failed horribly at writeing a resume so many times it isn't even possible to count. I really would appriciate any help you can offer in writeing a resume. MPM
If you are as young as you seem (16 or so) then most jobs that you can get into do not require a resume. Resumes are used for professional like jobs where certain skills are required. Find a friend that has a job, and ask them to talk to their boss about hireing you. It's always easiest to get a job if you know someone there. ~M

Adamskii
The biggest bit of advice I can give you is make sure your resume or cv is only 1 page long. When employers are going through applications (especially if they have lots) they will have two piles, if a resume is too long, untidy or poorly laid out it will go in the I'm not even going to bother to read that pile. I would suggest laying it out like this: 1. Your details (name, address, contact number) 2. About me (3-4 lines, positive descriptive words only) 3. Previous experience (any work you have done before, most recent first) include:- Job title, length of employment, employer details. 4. Qualifications (similar to previous experience, most recent first) That is a very basic structure for a resume.

As they say it's not what you know its who you know Also if you write a CV make sure you read it and read it again to get rid of spelling mistakes its one of the worst things you can do Good luck finding a job :D Respect- Oy_the_Great, Lode, Bubsa, Weezcake, Thrash111, Gloric, Vmser, Pianofrieak2, Runemetsa Sigs Made By - Pink

My resume is just under 3 pages long and I have employers calling me the majority of the time where my listed skills and previous history meet their requirements. I also tend to attach references along with my resume and letter of application, gets it up to about 6 pages or there abouts in total. I would suggest laying it out like this: 1. Have your: Address, phone number, email and mobile (if applicable) in the header. Then: your FULL NAME (as is on your birth cirtificate - do NOT use prefered names / nicknames) Work History (decending order) Volunteer Work (decending order) Education (decending order) Skills / Qualifications / Awards / Licences (dates obtained - decending) Referees (alphabetical - full name, position, institution / company / address & phone number)

Firstly saying that my advice is BS is heavily opinionated on your account and I don't appreciate it. I will however always take constructive criticism. Secondly does this sound like they are going for a professional job. If they were going for a professional job I would have posted different advice. ____
Firstly saying that my advice is BS is heavily opinionated on your account and I don't appreciate it. I will however always take constructive criticism. I said that them "throwing away long or poorly structured resumes" was and is not (always) true. Your saying that is a huge assumption on your part and deserves to be called out as false without proof to back it up. The only companies who are likely to do that are those you don't want to work for anyways. If their own management can't even take the time to review all applications, what impression does that send? Most likely that they'll take the first person that meets the requirements, whether or not someone more qualified applied because their resume got "thrown out" for being too long. Secondly does this sound like they are going for a professional job. If they were going for a professional job I would have posted different advice.Professonal or not, handing in a half-arsed resume that's lacking your education isn't going to get you a job. Neither will handing in one without references. It's all about exhibiting your qualities. The resume is there to sell you to the employer. Have the one professional resume and use it for everything. It'll have everything they need and if they don't hire you on that, you lucked out but at least it wasn't because you failed to provided basic information to them. cadburys_egg
I am only 15, and I don't have any references, this would be my first job. Any teachers that have seen good/hard work from you? My friend had a resume for a place in the RAF, he got his PSHCE teacher as a referance. Also, take Darkrick's advice. My resume is pretty poor at the moment, mainly because i've not even done GCSEs. Good luck anyway.
unknownmasterofnothing
I have a one page resume. I've only had 3 summer jobs that are unrelated. from monster.com- Consider a One-Page Resume If: * You have less than 10 years of experience. * You're pursuing a radical career change and your experience isn't relevant to your new goal. * You've held one or two positions with one employer. Consider a Two-Page Resume If: * You have 10 or more years of experience related to your goal. * Your field requires technical or engineering skills, and you need space to list and prove your technical knowledge. Put the most important information at the top of the first page. Lead your resume with a career summary so your key credentials appear at the forefront of the resume. On the second page, include a page number and include your name and contact information. Consider a Three-Page Resume or Longer If: * You're a senior-level manager or executive with a long track record of leadership accomplishments. * You are in an academic or scientific field with an extensive list of publications, speaking engagements, professional courses, licenses or patents. Multiple-page resumes can use addendum pages after page two. Job seekers can decide whether or not to send the full document or just the first two pages to a potential employer, based on the job opportunity requirements. A resume's like ... an application-letter saying why you should get the job, right? Because if it is I can probably help you... I think you're thinking of a cover letter? indy500fan
You don't need a resume for any job at that age. You don't even need them for a lot of career type jobs. My dad never made one, my brother in law never made one, the job I'm applying for doesn't require one, and all three of those jobs are good enough to make a career out of. You definently don't need one to work in a fast food place. EDIT: Of course, if you really wanted to do a resume, there is a resume wizard in MS Word or OO Writer. Making a resume is actually my homework for my computer class this week, weird coincidence. :D
Devilsdragon
At your age you don't need a resume(at least here in the US) go to the place that you wish to apply for and pick up an application. Don't be too picky about the hours you work because then you won't get hired(has happened to me and I've seen it happen). If you don't get a phone call within 3 buissness days call the place where you applied to check on your application, they like to see you being assertive. They will most likely give you a test of ~100 questions to see if you are right for the job, lie your [wagon] off and give them all answers that they want to here. If you are deadset on writing up a resume it'll look pretty terrible(I know mine does  ) but at the bottom put recommendations upon request(since you don't have any, it will give you time to get a few together incase they ask =) )
Make7upu101
Oddly enough I can help on this one. My dads job is actually basically resume writing. He says he does alot more such as interview training, cover letters. and updating but from what i've seen it's pretty much just resumes. I'll go ask him when I have a chance and see what he says. He pretty much only caters to professional resumes although we did just do a nifty little one for me to send out to colleges. For a first job you really don't need a resume anyway. When I was first looking for jobs 2 years ago I just went into each place, asked to meet the manager(or whoevers in charge of hiring), got an application from him/her, filled it out, turned it back in and waited for a call. If they didnt call (which the place that I'm working at now did) I kept calling and asking what the next step was.
