Have you ever MADE a text-based game?

Featured Replies

Well, i visited a web site called http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5758.html (oh, boy)

and this guy was talking about this text-based game he made and i got curious if anyone here ever made one. So if you ever have just post here and talk about whatever about it :) . Oh, i almost forgot, tell me HOW I can make a text-based game. I tried typing "text-based rpg maker" on google but get nothing interesting back!

I made a really simple one in QBASIC when I was very little. Very simple and stupid, I don't even remember the story and it was almost impossible to complete.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

I made one on my graphing caculator once.

I think it composed of turning a few corners and fighting some monster. I kind of liked the battle system I came up with (actually had it so it would roll a random number). If I would have spent more time on it (and had not been programing it on a caculator I could have done a lot more.

Maybe someday if I get a C++ compiler on my PC i'll try one.

I made a semi decent text-based RPG with the C++ programming language, with about 1 month of experience (starting from scratch). Now, I think programming is very boring and just not my style of spending time... But if you are interested in it, it's actually easy to learn. :) I don't believe the "go for the simple ones first or you can never go for C oriented languages". C++ was my first one and I had no problems with it.

I also made a very detailed text based DOS calculator with C++, which is probably one of the least challenging tools to write (but handy to have on your computer if you don't like the click-and-calculate version that comes standard with windows operating systems.. Or if you use Linux.

I made one with a partner in JAVA (Not Javascript!) And had alot of fun with it. I just typed in things in Wikipedia and came up with "The Ice Dragons of Ice land are Attacking Dublin, you must help !"

It was ok.

I made one as a guessing game, but when someone answered, it closed the menu.

I <3 Gears of War 2.

Add me on Xbox Live and mention you are from Tif :D

I made several text based games in python. Most just used ACII art to represent a visual image like tetris blocks.

theres a program called quest or something that can make text adventure games i used it a bit.. i never really made a text game.... i do make normal 2d games though

Yep, made one on my graphing calculator when I was bored in highschool. Was good enough that more than just me and friends was playing it before it died out.

Yea my friends made one on a graphing calculator. It was pretty simple and you always ended up falling in a hole and dying no matter what you did.

Yeah same here. Except mine was about winning Pokemon on the Price is Right

Oh, to be 11 again.

I've typed some ''games'' over in my graphic calculator, but I still didn't make my own ones. Can anyone give me some basics on how to do that? :)

At least, I think that.

Same here. Also, not text based really, but this reminds me of Unlimited Adventures. Some of those were hilarious.

I don't use a mac anymore, but when I was 11 I wrote a fairly complicated game based in applescript! It had an engine, and you could explore different rooms and go in the compass directions and upstairs and stuff, but no combat system. That was my first ever program. I'll see if I can get a copy up here.

You act like the game community is like the stinking bowels of hell.... In all reality.. its much.. much... worse.

I made one on my calculator during the week of standardized tests in 8th grade. It was about being a drug lord...

I also made one awful game using PHP/MySQL 3 or 4 years ago called "Pirates Don't Cry (they kill people)"

It was a fun way to pass time at least...

If you guys want a very advanced program made for creating text based games only, check out Adrift.

Bleh, once I get off my lazy bum and go to Imageshack, there will be a picture here.

GameMaker, so easy, no programming languages provided. You can make RPGS but not text based I don't think..
