Fixing the ever broken PvP system.

First off I have to tell you guys that I am posting this from the viewpoint of someone who has not played in a year. However, I am also posting this as someone who thinks that this certain idea could very well bring back a lot of PK'ers and help the wilderness and PvP.

The idea is simple, and soley lies around the logic of pures. Pures are what make up the wilderness today. However, because of such an emphisis on having to destroy your opponent quickly before they can get away, the deffence stat has such gone ignored. Many will get it up a little bit, as it helps on PvE mobs, but in the PvP game this stat is not practical. Yes, it can help you in duels and 1v1's, but runescape's PvP isn't about that. The wilderness is all about scoring that fast kill.

Now, you may be wondering what i'm getting to here. You see, the majority of PvP today is enjoyed by pures until you get up to a quite high level. Because of this, however, everyone tends to become the same cookie-cutter builds. The idea that Strength and attack are nearly the only important stats in PvP as well cut's off the ability to PvP by many of those who actually wish to have deffence.

I've always tried to think of a way to solve this problem, PvP that is. It than dawned on me:

The deffence skill. It largly relates to protecting yourself and governs your hitpoints. My suggestion in general than, is this: Make your deffence skill roughly govern most of your hitpoints.

The reason is clear, both for ballance and simply pure logic. The logical answer is it is how will incresing my skill with a weapon help my HP? How will being able to shoot a bow better or simply being able hit harder affect how much I can get smacked around? The answer is, it doesn't.

The ballance issue is the large one, and obviously such a change would need to be taken with the upmost care. You can't make a change such as this on a whim or the turn of a dime or it's bound to screw up.

There are a few ideas on how this could help:

- Make deffence and HP a 1:1 ratio. Every level in deffence gives you a hitpoint. This would cap out at above 99 though and is logicaly a bad move, because you could have a low level character running around with 99hp, making PvP even more unplayable.

- You could make the ratio different.

- You could place deffence as more as an emphisis on HP than your other base combat stats. For example, you would gain less HP experience when in an agressive mode than a deffensive one. I can't tell you an exact number, however.

Now, obviously this idea could be fairly contraversial as far as runescape goes. I am not trying to effectivly "wipe out" the idea of a pure, but simply level the ground. My idea is that if you can kill faster than you should be able to die faster as well.

There are also obviously some gaping holes in here. One is the actual combat level of characters. This change may end up making some players be able to be an even lower level pure than ever before because of the change of hitpoints. This could perhaps be avoided by just simply making your combat level be based off of the base stats, and not HP (as HP is simply an after effect of gaining xp in your other stats).

I'm not sure what really got me into writing this, but I guess it was just someone (zubedoo) pointing out the dislike for pures. I guess something simply, I don't know, clicked. I realize I may not be aware of the very current situation in PvP, but from what i've seen on the forums the large base of it has not changed much at all.

have defense reduce the ammount of damage you get as well...

Hmm.. you know, i actually can't poke that full of holes! :XD:

Anyway, i don't think it would work very well, as that would lead to characters like me, with balanced skills, the ability to own the wilderness. with more hitpoints and a reasonable amount of damage, and great armour, i should be able to own everything really fast. And then...

Lets say i was an attack and defense pure. I take my poisoned dragon dagger and attack a newly made defense pure under the new rules. I still hit 20, 20, 20, 20. Not going to stop me unless hes got more than 80 hits, (or im unlucky). Or, the defense pures (with 60 attack) become so powerful that they take their dragon daggers and go own the str pures.

Either way, this will either be done very slowly, or not at all. But i do think the field needs to be leveled, but how?

If it was like that, it would probably just make the pkers with def pwn everyone, just like the str pkers are doing now.

Instead, maybe to level it out, shields have a "chance to block" rather than a defence rating. So with higher defence, come the ability to have higher grade shields, and a higher chance to block.

And maybe armor should give you more protection than it does. I mean, irl if you are wearing a big thick plate body, and someone stabs you in the chest with a poisoned dagger, its gonna do absolutly nothing.

Or perhaps jagex should bring back character classes making them more equal so you can't make 1 type of account that owns everyone. make each character class have advantages and disadvantages. Mages cannot weild heavy swords or armor, hit high on warriors but can take little damage before dying, warriors cannot do magic or run as fast, but can do heaps of damage and take plenty of damage. rangers have some sort of stealth and evation, lower strength but higher accuracy and damage from "critical hits." and a thieving bonus. Monks have special prayers and prayer regeneration etc.

That idea would be more like a rs3, the hard quests could be updated to so each class can have a way of doing them, and some quests are easier or harder for certain classes.

The game mechanics of RS is already too far gone to allow defense as a more powerful skill, such as the ability to lower enemy damage. If defense is allowed to do that, it would overthrow the combat mechanism and would then require a revamp of the whole thing. Example: Armours. They give you much more defense than you would ever get by yourself, without armour.
