imhomer
Wow, it's been a while since I actually posted work in this forum. Maybe some of you remember me as the mean guy who broke apart your art into tiny little pieces and scrutinized each facet? Anyways I remembered an old picture that GS did a few months ago and I thought it was a kinda cool topic so I tried the same kind of style but with a twist. Behold teh robotz0rz!!!11!! UPDATE: Ok, I started working on this again with the face. I feel that my shading is good but I'm having difficulties with my 6 color palette. I really don't want to go over 6 colors for the gold/green colors but I think I might have to. Tell me what you guys think I should do. Neck Shading COmplete? Neck Shading Cont. Flat shading Basic Profile Neck Partially Shaded I've been trying to do a fusion of human and mechanical parts just as an interesting idea. Doing robots is nice, you can do all hell to anatomy and say "it's meant to be that way" and people have to believe you .

WutangFlu
I dont know if you have seen the show "fooly cooly" but if you do know that show, by chance, does that robot on that show have any such influence on the one your pixeling now? -to me they look the same, even at your early WIP. pryomancer
I don't think so, LP. The robot Homer is using is from an animated film. It does look very nice at this stage, hopefully your shading will compliment it too. Good work.

Uhh, to LP, I don't get cable/satellite TV so...............no I haven't seen it and it isn't based on it. And Pyromancer this isn't from any animated film though I'd be interested which one you think it's from (definatly not Robots. This is entirely from my head. I meant it to be a combonation of Human and Mechanical elements. It has some influence from the Cylon centurions (the 2003 version) as well as from old silent movies such as Metropolis and, of course, The Terminator. Overall though It's not really based on anything, I just tried to bring together a lot of ideas I liked into one package. So far I think it looks awesome but I don't think my shading will be able to do it justice. By the way, update. I didn't really do that much but I refined a few bits that I think needed working on. I'm kinda at a loss of how to draw what's visible of the lower body though.

terley
Didn't work much on it today but I'd like to get some feedback on the shading and detail work I've already done. ok, well firstly just to say the design is pretty sweet so far, and your shading is pretty good so far, my advice would be to up the contrast, and loose a few of you're colours, metal has much more contrast than normal objects so don't be afraid to lighten up the shines and darken the dark areas. I hope you don't mind I made a quick edit to make the most of less colours, more shines and using the darks to define shapes more. but there's seriously not much wrong with your shading, just a few tweaks would improve it so. Also I've added a re-colouring suggestion, as I personally think greys can look a bit dull imo, adding slight Hue shifts should add a little something to this guy. Plus a black background makes him stand out more, plus gives you another shade to add to the detailing. As for his bottom half, too much would be too distracting imo, just something simple like this would do. not sure what you'd prefer. Hope any of that comes as useful, goodluck with this dude. Any other opinions would be great too everyone, awesome suggests there's nothing much to improve on, I say there's always something to be improved. -Ter
imhomer
Thanks for the c/c. Now that I look at it you're right; I've shaded it more like velvet than steel :-k.
imhomer
Took Ter's advice. I might still change the colors around a bit.
terley
Much better Imo dude =D> remember to look at references for this also, it's almost impossible to re-create metal without first observing what actually happens. I was browsing deviantart and I though of you : .. could help with shading maybe. wtever lol. http://tn3-1.deviantart.com/300W/large/ ... _robot.jpg car part robot by ~madatom13 http://ic1.deviantart.com/fs12/i/2006/2 ... _airaf.jpg anime robot by ~airaf again goodluck with this. imhomer
Yeah, those ref pics sort of confirm what I thought. It seems that metal has a single very bright spot, then a middle shade that extends quite a ways without much difference in light and then a dark shade. Essentially 3 main shades with smaller contrasts within the main shades to blend a little.
reddawn509
posting as requested :P ...erm, not much to C/C right now, a bit later on I might have some hidden excuse to avoid making my self look like a idiot after your C/C age on my thread  well see how it turns out :)

eckered
no offence but your face looks terrible imo. you shaded it left to right, which gives it almost no texture. his mouth makes him look sad. his nose is mishsapen. my mom is screeming at me to get off the computer. so se yeh wop wop

It's shaded left to right because the light is coming from the right..... I'm not sure how shading it from left to right makes it have little texture, I think that's more to do with the lack of colors I've shaded it with. The mouth, eyes, and eyebrows are supposed to make him look like he's sad; contemplating his own existence. I'll look into the misshapen nose. Now that you mention it it does look somewhat odd. Fortress2000
I think the robot would look better with a visor, rather than a face. More.... robot-like. Writing in colour was fun while it lasted...The Tip.It. Furry! :D
misterxman
The shading is good; however, it would be better if you made the dark tones really dark (for much higher contrast, which most metals tend to have in terms of color). To finish the coloring, add some really bright shiny spots somewhere on all parts depending on lighting, as you may notice on most metals. Otherwise, the robot seems to be made of rubber and not have that robotic feel to it. Pixel sigs by me.Pixel Art
