Whats the difference between a Democratic and a Republican.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've always wondered.

Basically just their core policies and values. Republicans vote more conservative on social issues and are very liberal economically, while Democrats lean to the socially liberal and economically conservative.

I like Lewis Black's definition though: Republicans suck, and Democrats blow.

np at all lol. They're both essentially the same thing, political parties trying to hold position in office via elections

Republicans stand for more state's rights values, religous values and fundamental values really. Conservative and right-wing is what goes with them

Democrats are a less big business and more federal orriented group who are pro-environment and liberal and left wing.

Democrats can pronounce "nuclear". :P

Republicans also generally try to impose strict Christian morals on people (anti-abortion, anti-gay, etc).

Thanks for the civics lesson.

Personal opinions aside:

Republicans tend to favor less Federal Government involvement, and an emphasis on the rights of the individual states. They have always run this way, but have only really been the "Conservative" party for about 15 years. Before 2000, they were fiscally conservative as well.

Democrats tend to favor greater Federal Government and believe that Washington should be more involved in the affairs of the common man. The Democrats were the Conservative Party until 1988. They have traditionally been more liberal with the budget, but recently have stated otherwise. Which is funny, because they can't accomplish thier goals without spending lots of money.

Religion has only played a part in either since 2000. Before then, the last President that people talked about being religious was Kennedy for being a Catholic.

uhm.. and what's the difference between a republic and a democracy?

Republic: The Common people elects a representative (for state, city, etc), who among themselfs (other representatives from other state, cities, etc) vote for laws.

Democracy is the common people vote for laws, what the representatives do among themselfs.

Basically a republic is spilt into municipalities/districts. These districts each send a representaive to a senate/congress to vote for the people. A democracy is basically where the everyone in the country participates, like general elections and stuff. The US is supposed to be a Representative Democracy; a combination of both

True, representative democracy is the correct word. Not only is direct democracy like that of ancient Greece with it's popular assemblies nearly impossible today, with the sheer amount of decisions to be made, it would be very costly to ask the people about every single thing they may not even have enough information about.

No opinions involved only facts  :

Republicans don't care for you and just attack every country they can't pronounce.

And democrats use your money for your wealth and well-being and generally making your life easier.

Now half-seriously:

The nordic countrys are pretty leftist(/democratty(I love to make up my own words in a language I don't know how to talk)) and we have free public healthcare, schools and that kind of stuff, and I'm really happy with it. And by the way, the Finlands educational system was ranked the best in the world this year. (can't find a source just now, google it if you don't believe me)

Guest GhostRanger

So how about someone giving a thorough definition of the difference between Reagan Republicans and Bush (41 or 43) Republicans?
