Lineage II Private server gets busted by the FBI

If you go there you may notice something..somewhat odd. What used to be the #1 L2 server (although, that was purly off of how many players played it. Sadly, the head GM was very corrupt) you will notice this:

The graphic you see on this page--the FBI's Anti-Piracy Warning Seal--was specifically created to deter illegal practice and to increase public awareness of the penalties associated with piracy.

Why? Because piracy of media and other commercial goods causes huge losses to the U.S. economy each year̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâæand it's American consumers who are paying the price.

Where will the seal (and all statements that say "FBI Anti-Piracy Warning") appear? On a lot of different kinds of goods̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâæsubject to the terms of licensing agreements. But right now, we're just getting started.

As of August 2006, the FBI has authorized use of the FBI Anti-Piracy seal and warning by members of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), subject to each member entering into a formal Uniform Authorization Agreement. Association members should contact the MPAA, RIAA, SIIA, BSA, or ESA for more information.

Now we are evaluating the licensing arrangements we have with members of these associations with a view towards permitting the broadest possible public use of the seal by all individuals and businesses with a copyright interest. Please check this webpage periodically for updates on the status of this initiative.

In the meantime, it is perfectly fine for anyone, without FBI approval, to use the following generic language on material protected under U.S. copyright law: "Warning: The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to 5 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000."

A last word to the wise:Unauthorized use of the FBI seal, name, and initials are subject to prosecution under Federal Criminal law, including Sections 701, 709, and 712 of Title 18 of the United States Code.

In the panic a few other servers (l2-paradise and L2 Revenge) have shut down in fear of also getting charged.

Anyways, comments anyone? These servers were basicly servers set up and run by normal people using leaked C1 files (although later a corrupt NC Soft employee sold many people a full C4 file to run a server). They were free to play although they survived throughout donations for certain items.

Your thoughts?

linea... wha? Sorry for my ignorance, but could you add some backup information?

I don't know for sure what this is about? A game that brokes copyright laws? Don't they have any REAL crimes to fight against?

Thats the actual, retail, game. These servers were breaking the "copyright laws" set out.

Ooh, now I get it. Kinda lika RS private servers, I suppose. So the break was fairly big then if the FBI gets involved?

Yeah, except Lineage II is a much larger game than Runescape.

Wow.. I played on that server for quite a while.. I actually just played it not too long ago, but after they updated with C4 towns/mobs I was kind of lost and gave up. Too bad to see they got busted by the FBI. I didn't think servers like that were illegal. I guess I won't be playing L2 anymore..

If it was illegal, then good riddance to them.

While it was illegal, it was a lot more fun than the retail version. On L2X I could get a character to 60 in 10 hours, no problem. On retail it takes endless hours of grinding to get to 60 (which on L2X wasn't even good enough for PvP). Also, cash drops were great. I could farm 2 bil in a week or less. So while it was illegal, it was more fun.

haha thats like the WoW servers but Blizzard donest care to much about them there not a major threat atm

since you cant do all the same things as the game yet that is

Can someone explain to me in simpler terms what happened?

If at first you dont suceed, then you fail.

And I'm sure stealing cars is a lot more fun than saving up and buying them. But it doesn't mean it's justified.

If I got this right, the point of this thread is not that those actions were illegal and they got busted, but that FBI was the one to bust them.

That's why you run these kind of operations from a country that has no copyright laws and won't work with the RIAA/FBI. :shame:

I know the price. I pay it gladly.

That's the big thing. These servers did take quite a lot of buisness away from the main company.

also, del, L2X was extremly corrupt. And, I belive they are taking action against the main admin of the server ("schmee"). Good ridance to him I say, he made a ton of cash from "donations".

Who else would?

Copyright office?

FBI jurisdiction

:wall: ah I'm bit frozen today - AND I'm not very familiar with US copyright law monitoring. Where I live we have a special independent organization supervising the copyright laws.

I did play on L2Extreme for a while ages ago, I must admit I was amazed at the sheer amount of people, it felt like a real server, just more fun.

However,

That's why you run these kind of operations from a country that has no copyright laws and won't work with the RIAA/FBI.

is true. Most private servers are run from servers in eastern european countries, African countries, Russian siberia, island states etc. that do have copyright laws but the local police can't be bothered to do anything. No police will drive 600 miles to a snowy village to raid every house for a computer, when in that time they have already burned the hard-drive and have backups hidden in another town.

Still I must agree with insane, even though I did test the server out of curiosity.

And I'm sure stealing cars is a lot more fun than saving up and buying them. But it doesn't mean it's justified.

Because the developers did pay a lot of money to develop the game, with the sheer intent of profiting. They didn't state their files can be used privately, which makes the FBI actions justified.

Other than the posts on other forums like "screw the FBI", I don't see how it can't be justified. They did break copyright laws. Though, there ARE poor people that really want to play it but can't afford it because they barely have an old used computer and a 56k modem line. They are just the minority. Most people just don't want the low XP rates of a L2 server.

Yeah I heard about this lol, couldn't help but laugh.

And I'm sure stealing cars is a lot more fun than saving up and buying them. But it doesn't mean it's justified.

Stealing a car deprives the owner of the car. Copying software (not stealing - theft requires the intention to permanently deprive) does not deprive the owner of the software.

I'm not saying it is justified or okay, but that you can't compare it to stealing.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

I play on private Ragnarok Online servers... :-w

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

I just started playing l2x a week ago...

Does any1 know a good C5 server with rates between 100 and 200?

C5 just came out like a month or two dude... Most servers just got C4 working :/.

This is taking away many customers from the game however. I know I generaly had more fun on these private servers than retail.
