How to Bring Back a Good Runescape Community

Ok, hopefully this is in the right forum, but if it isnt, move it.

Ever notice that total Jerk that just passed you? Ever see the "Good ol' days" Threads people from classic write on the official forums? and last of all ever hear "I just got hacked, please give free stuff" ?

Well what do you think led to this? I believe it was other people being jerks to them. You know in real life if someone spits some gum on your shoe, and starts yelling at you, thats going to ruin a good part of your day right?

In runescape its basicly the same thing. Someone hacks you, you get the sinking feeling, someone scams you big time, you get the sinking feeling, a friend is mean to you, you get the sinking feeling. Scamming and Hackings a big issue for me, although i don't get hacked and scamed much, im pretty much an impregnable wall :wall: .

But when a friend says it, what do you think? Ive probably helped out other friends recover by lending ATLEAST a million gp.

My first thing im focusing on is Scammers. These people are either the beggining jerks, the ones who ruin other peoples day, or the after effects of another jerk. What I mean by after effects is a person who got scammed, or hacked were he was like a cornered dog, fighting to the death to get back on top. The "cornered dogs" will then cheat because they though "He cheated me, so all im doing is getting back". Well these people get addicted to cheating and they keep on doing it, so you see the same thing happen with a ton of people again.

Then theirs the hackers, srry for the caps but I HATE THESE PEOPLES GUTS. I have never been hacked on Runescape, but i have been hacked five miserable times on other games. This means people lose all their friends, items, and they have to start all over again (or quit). The people that do start all over again, arnt neccesarily the cheeriest of people. If handled wrongly, these people can be like a bull in a china shop (ive seen it happen) .

Well how do we stop this, it all comes down to the title i put on this thread. Simple Politness. You know that noob that just got hacked? Talk with him a bit, dont call him noob, just talk with him. Some of my best friends have been noobs that were in that situation. Another thing to do is apologise if you call someone "noob". its a very inconsiderate thing to do, just think if you called your grandma "noob" and she knew what you meant, would she be to happy?

Another thing, unless in a crowded place, keep the friends and public chat on. Unless you your Zezima or someone else thats high up there, you should just be able to chat with the person that pmed you that you dont know (the result of many friends :D ). Talk nicely to them, be "polite" (a word almost unknown in runescape). Heres a good saying thats fairly common "try walking a mile in their shoes". and without further discussion, take this to heart, i hate seeing jerks on the streets (be polite to them also, even though i do hate them <.< )

exactly... before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes, that way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away and have thier shoes.

no just kidding, i see people do the most inconsiderate things while hunting. someone has all 3 of thier traps set up and suddenly.... poof, evil bob. they get taken away and thier traps are left there. then someone runs up and grabs them, then when the person gets back from scaperune, they wont give the traps back. i mean, come on, the trap costs almost nothing, and all it does is inconvienence the person who has to go and buy more traps.

what do you gain from having an extra trap, that you most likely cannot use?

i always give people's traps, axe heads, and whatnot back to them.

about time someone spoke their mind! i agree with you completely. im sick of people that act like they own the game, just because they are level whatever and im only 73. the people i respect are the ones who try to go out of their way to help people and be nice.

by the way, archer11, nice avatar. im an age of empires guy too

I think the whole 'politness' thing is only a problem with younger players.

Now I'm not saying every young player is a scammer, or someone who just acts like a jerk whenever they get the chance, but most of the younger players I meet are often rude, and have no respect.

With that being said, there are always the older players that are still rude.. But I think it all goes with the fact that people think just because someone's behind a computer screen, one does not get hurt, or take things seriouslly.. And that when you are rude to someone on the computer, they can't do anything back to you. This is a game though, so if someone is being rude, you can easily just ignore them, and if you really need to, just log-out, and do something else (Easier said than done, I'm sure.)

I like what you said though, about just talking to the players, and treat them nicely. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Oh well, I guess I rambled quite a bit though.. but I think I made some points. Enjoyed the post archer11, nice work. :-)

Wha.. What..? Where am I?

You're right, happy to see some considerate people playing Runescape.

I think i am kinda mature (I'm 17) but is it normal that almost 75% of the people on my friends list to whom I talk regularly are over 30?

I don't think so, but it is because they are almost practically the only ones not acting like jerks.

(talking about people I met, but Im sure we have lots of nice teenagers here)

Since my returning to RS, I found that more people are a lot more rude now, then when I was heavily into RS. It's a shame..

but I am a nice person, always accepting friends if anybody wants to be mine, I actually feel bad for the low levels or the people who just died because that used to be me some 5 years ago, but luckily I had my friend help me, so ya, I feel bad for them.

I agree , Since I have become over 100 combat people having been pestering me for money or doing things. I never had anyone on my Ignore list but now I have over 10 people who bug me if I take off.

Please try not to double post.

So far in my travels in the world of Runescape, I have not met many people who I would call "friends": merely associates. Their personalities and interests are generally not compatible with mine - not that I expect to make friends over the Internet, and on a game full of people who are mostly younger than I am...

Why do you resist? My experiments are only helping humanity push the boundaries of the Art of Toxicology... you should be proud to be one of my victims.

I think some of the probelm isn't just people being rude, but... you help a newb out when he dies. Or lend him some money or make him armor. This isn't bad the first few times, but if you say lend out money long enough you get broke... and if a person begs and gets stuff, they just beg more... Plus it IS easy to have no empathy over the internet, as you don't see them... and a good chunk of people getting hacked just need to make sure they don't pick a pass their friends can guess... and with the number of people complaining about being hacked and scammed, you just think "They should just pick a pass that people who know them won't guess"... "they just should've read the second trade windo".."everyone dies get over it"... I think people would be nicer if there wasn't so MANY people getting hacked, scammed, dying, etc.

Small communities are better then large communites. End of story.

Squab unleashes Megiddo! Completed all quests and hard diaries. 75+ Skiller. (At one point.) 2000+ total. 99 Magic.
[spoiler=The rest of my sig. You know you wanna see it.]

my difinition of noob is i dont like u, either u are better then me or u are worst them me

Buying spins make you a bad person...don't do it. It's like buying nukes for North Korea.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

your article was the equivalent of a circumcized porcupine

The only thing wrong with it is the lack of a percentage for when you need to stroke it.

Archer, just two small things:

1) Do not double post, if you have something new to say say and you just posted then edit your last post.

2) Do not bump your topic or ask if someone else is going to reply. If someone will reply then they will reply, it's just that simple. There's no need for spammy posts all over the place asking for people to post. The ONLY time you should bump your topic is when it's on the 2nd page or further and in that bump post you MUSt contribute to the topic. Simply saying bump is considered spam.
