Stupidity, can it be helped?

Some might just have a feeling, that the things that are expected of them make no sense whatsoever. Yes education is nice and helpful, but there would be more important things to learn. Imo the education offered by school is shallow, so why care at all? To neatly fit into and get respected by mainstream society? To become a respectable citizien? I guess many students will feel that way, without reflecting upon it on a rational level. Otherwise they'd probably conclude that it'd be easier to step out of the mainstream, if they learn as much as they can about it.

Anyone can do extremely well given they study for enough time

WRONG! I have terrible terrible memory (I am on several meds for this) and I can study for 5hours for a test and not remember any of it... :wall: And it gets worse when on your papers you see "I know your capable of more" when your NOT!

I think, for the most part, it can be helped. For all of middle school, all I had to do was pay attention in class and do my homework to get all A's all three years. I'm now in a top notch school which is a little harder than just paying attention. But even with about an hour of studying each night, every student should be able to excel in his or her classes. I personally think some people just lack the work ethic; this may not mean they're stupid, but they're obviously not living their school days to their full potentials.

This thread should be turned into 'why America should change to the Metric system'.

... just throwin' it out there.

So if America changed to the Metric system, all problem would be solved? Why ain't I smart then, I'm a pretty average student (6-8's) but I really can't understand why the Metric system is so special.

OT: Ignore them, laugh at them later, spend your money on hamburgers where they work, drive away in your chique car, etc, etc

Get my point? The stupid poeple will work for you.

Some people just weren't born with natural ability, or were placed into a situation where they were unable to build up what can be called "intelligence".

You can go around calling people stupid, but the truth of the matter is that you don't have enough information to make that kind of decision. How hard people worked to get wherever they are isn't entirely in their control, so you can't do things such as make fun of people who work at Taco Bell just because they dropped out of college. You don't know the problems that person may have faced. Sure, it works sometimes, but there's also the chance that you'll just come off as an [wagon].

Edit: I can't say that? I'm suprised.

A mind not to be changed by place or time.

The mind is its own place, and in itself

Can make a heav'n of hell, a hell of heav'n.

I've been told by many different things (test scores, teachers, parents, other kids, ext...) that I am an "above average" student. I'm in honors math and english, and (as an eight grader) i'm taking a freshman French class.

I have noticed in my middle school that there are four kinds of people in the intelligence area...

1. The Smart kids who pass everything pretty easily

2. The average kids who get by on B's and C's

3. Those kids who have trouble in school, and they really try, but cannot pass.

4. The kids who could be smart, but don't try.

It's that fourth group that I cannot stand. Those who have an I.Q. lower than room temperature, but could be so much more. They get D's or F's because they don't try, but blame it on something or someone else. Those people who don't seem to even care where they end up, and those who I resist the temptation to say "See you in 10 years, don't spit in my Big Mac."

I ask, can it be helped? Can a person who doesn't work be molded into a good student? Or is it a real problem that they have no work ethic?

Furthermore, another question I have is where does this problem start? Is it parents that A.) Don't care or B.) Set a bad example?

I may seem mean, and this may sound bad to some, but I want answers. If I have to suffer with these people, so I believe I at least have the right to know.

You have that 4th group all figured out wrong or you need to add a 5th. There are a few kids at my old high school who were ABSOLUTELY brilliant but didnt do any of the work so they got bad grades, these people dont look smart, dont act smart and dont seem smart until you get to know them.

You people think they are idiots because you try hard in school, do your work and study for hours on end and get good grades. Most of these people I knew who were smart passed every test but didnt do any of the work so they fail. The thing is that in easier classes like middle school and elementary school they could get amazing grades because it was VERY easy for them without doing the work so they got good grades. This developed a HORRIBLE work ethic for them, they never did any work in elementary school or middle school and then once they hit high school when it became harder they werent in the habit of doing work.

I know a lot of people who get straight A's but are idiots, they just study a lot and do the work but barely pass tests. These kids are a perfect example of why the education system does not work

Think about it: the English system sucks. 1 foot has 12 inches? 16 ounces in a pound? While we're talking about pounds, why is it abbreviated with lb? I see no l and no b in "pound". One mile has 5280 feet in it (or something to that extent)? This system makes entirely no sense.

Consider this: 100 centimeters in a meter. 1000 meters in a kilometer. 1000 grams in a kilogram. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather count my units in 10's, 100's, and 1000's than 12's, 16's, and more awkward numbers.

Maybe the fourth group is disillusioned with the educational system. Maybe they feel that the subjects learnt aren't conducive to their lives later on - for instance, Reverse Trigonometry. [unless of course you become an engineer or along those lines]. Regardless of what it is, people have different views and precepts regarding how they want to live their life.

There's no changing that. If everyone who had the potential to do well at school [which shouldn't be mistaken for being smart - intelligence and being able to rote learn are altogether different] did so, then there would be very few people to conduct the jobs we consider distasteful, such as cleaning toilets. However our society relies on this integral element of the human condition, because without them, our community wouldn't function very effectively, now would it?

Imagine have 99% of people wishing, and achieving degrees in law. What are we going to do with 6 billion lawyers? More importantly - who's going to farm the food, process it, distribute it, maintain our sewerage and etc.

Or maybe, I'm just a fourth group person in disguise.

I don't get you here, maybe you mean, "Those who have an IQ higher than room temperature". cause if their IQ is lower than room temperature, they're not really expected to do well in school are they? And I don't think it's interesting why stupid people fail classes, what's interesting is why smart people fail classes.

And even more interesting is like we have it in sweden, where the REALLY good people get the same grades as half-dumb people who study a little, just cause the bars are set way too low for the really smart people.

But anyhow, if smart people who don't excel bother you so much, live with it until you can choose not to see people who don't excel anymore...i.e. college or whatever where you can get in to super-serious studying getting rid of all the non-interested people.

yea, but don't you think the celsius scale is SLIGHTLY more adapted to the SI standards (just to make every day living that little less tedious, i.e. writing half the amount of numbers for normal temperatures?)

The sad thing is, the kids that dont try usually end up finding somthing that they really care about and make millions/billions off it. (bill gates, eistien (SP?) VIDEO GAME CREATORS.) so when you say "dont spit on my big mac" your false.

If you have motivation and real plans, yeah, you can drop out of school. If you just decide to drop out 'for the heck of it' to lazy around and eventually find out you have no money, that's a big no-no.

Yeah, Bill Gates dropped out, yeah, Einstein hated his math teacher and failed his classes (and look at what he became).

But they're probably exceptions, though there are hundreds of thousands of other unknown people that dropped out as well and are well off (such as my fathers friend who has less education than me, he owns 4 shops in a shoe franchise and makes more money than I do).

Still, for each 10 succesful 'dropouts', there are 90 who will most likely fail due to a lack of planning. No, you don't necessarily need education to make money. But most people don't know how to go on about their lives without an education and an ordinary job.

And if you don't either know how to make money or don't want to get an education for a job, you could be screwed.
