Adam007
There are no threads with potential for disagreement. There are no threads about topics that actually make a difference. Everyone was so anxious to avoid conflict (topic starter included, I believe). Well, now you've got it, and I guess you don't like it. Lack of conflict is proportional to lack of interest. Are you talking specifically about the lack of religious threads? No, I'm talking specifically about the lack of argumentative threads about things that matter to people in real life. An argument about a video game subforum pales in comparison to an ethical argument like Saddam's hanging (the last decent thread here imo, and it was locked). I agree. The argument I'm in right now is pretty nonsensical to be honest. I mean I'm holding my ground but overall it has pretty low significance compared to what we could be talking about. I'm just not seeing so much intelligent conversation on most issues. I think a topic needs to start off with some informational prompt that leads to discussion. A thread is pointless if there isn't room for real discussion and debate in my opinion. Threads that are specific questions (like: "What kind of engine should I buy for my new car?") have little merit to me.
Gin_and_Tonic
A thread which containts logical, well presented, interesting opinions, points of view, or facts is, in my opinion, a 'good thread'... As long as it is'nt 'Where do you live', 'Fave Team', or something which contemplates a one or two word answer, then its topical.

Intarweb
Except that's not a conversation, Actually, it is. Do you not know what a conversation is? if it were a discussion about what it's like where they live(like the one thread on this forum) then it's ok, but just going "Where do you live?" is just spam. The opening post cannot end with "Discuss." Most of those threads actually evolve into more discussions about the places they live - or why they like certain teams, etc. And even if they don't - what's wrong with enjoying reading about where are the posters are from, or the teams they like? If people enjoy it, why does it have to be a deep discussion? People enjoy finding out information about the people they discuss with - so what's wrong with that? You have to remember I have also said "in a reasonable quantity." Of course we wouldn't every thread to be like that, but if people like threads like that - why not have a few? You crampin' my style. And yes, even though people find one-answer threads fun, it doesn't make it any reasonable. I'm sure people would love to see porn threads in here, but would that be reasonable? Yes, imo, but the mods might disagree. edit: bad typo :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
Devilsdragon
Actually, it is. Do you not know what a conversation is? My view of a conversation is that there are one or more people talking back an forth multiple times. A question such as "what is your favorite color?" with the answer of "blue" doesn't fit into my definition so I don't consider it a conversation. I put stuff like that on the same level as exchanging pleasantries. Most of those threads actually evolve into more discussions about the places they live - or why they like certain teams, etc. And even if they don't - what's wrong with enjoying reading about where are the posters are from, or the teams they like? You have to remember I have also said "in a reasonable quantity." Of course we wouldn't every thread to be like that, but if people like threads like that - why not have a few? Yes, they can evolve and when it does then it can be considered a quality thread, but most of them don't. I never said that there was something wrong with it or that there had to be deep discussion, just that there has to be some discussion. There's nothing wrong with threads like that, but I consider them spam. The thing is though that my view of spam is very wide and even though I consider it spam I don't think it should be locked/deleted.

The sad thing is, that kind of hybrid, knowledge-applying "wise newbies who have used other forums" don't virtually exist on tip.it. Real smart users here are 1:500, (fortunately a lot of them do post on off topic). Even the example you mentioned doesn't apply for certain reasons which you can possibly figure out. Look at the recent posts by new users. That's most likely going to be the trend even in the future.
