Lionheart_0
This thread is about generalized science, not just for evolution. There is no actual point to the thread except discussing science: laws, theories, equations, ect. So no saying this is spam. If this becomes a huge spam war like the Evolution thread, I will immediately get it closed. And yes, i purposely spelled science wrong, its an inside joke :P So, Just to move things off the Christianity thread, discuss any science questions or news or such that you wish to say. First id like to say that I took Biology and Chemistry this semester, and found them extreamly hard. Has anyone had any such troubles? Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! insane
I took first year chem at university last year. What was hard about it was that the lectures contained very few examples, and the ones that were given were extremely simple. It's easy to figure out the oxidation number of S in SO2, but on the exam we had to figure out the oxidation number of, say, C, in KrCO4S5P2Si2. tripsis
I took Biology last year and am in my second semester of Chemistry. Personally, I just don't like either one of them. I didn't/don't find either particularly hard, I just don't put any effort in because neither interest me. But I see science as just straight up facts and concepts: either you get it or you don't. But this is probably just because that's sort of how I "work." I'm good at math and sciences in general, because the way I see it, it's just a bunch of memorizing and understanding, which I do very well. I see a fact and I get it. ..Which is probably why I don't particularly excel in subjects like English and religion which require a bit more analyzing and discussing :P But I really think that that science classes are a lot different than actual scientific research and discoveries. I feel like there's a whole other element involved in that. When we learn about science, we just sit in a stuffy room and memorize a bunch of stuff that someone else came up with, whereas actually going out and being the first to discover/prove something is completely different. Not quite sure if that was what you were looking for, in terms of discussing science. But at least it relates to your last question :P - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog
Lionheart_0
I took first year chem at university last year. What was hard about it was that the lectures contained very few examples, and the ones that were given were extremely simple. Only commenting on this part, because i have no idea about the second part of what you said, only in grade 11 university chem. I found my chem course to contain so much that we had little time for examples, and i had to learn from the text book alot, which i found really hard. My bio text book was easy to understand, but the chem one was too full of stuff I didn't need. Mind explaining the oxidation thing? (If you want) Tripsis: Ya, it relates to what I asked. I have no real plan for the thread, just kinda build on it as it goes along, and hopefully some people might learn some stuff to. Not to mention i hope this gets some science stuff out of the religion topics. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Behave or I will send my Moose mounted Beaver launchers at you! Obsessive_Passion
Well, I no longer study any science. With only 14 'units' of subjects to choose from, I decided a future in business and finance was more suited to me. Then again, economics is a social science, so I suppose that, too, can be discussed? On another note: I enjoyed chemistry and physics during the few years I did actually study them. But it was basic Year 10 work - balancing chemical equations, concept of inertia. Amazingly, though, I still remember most of it.

For a molecule to be neutral, the sum of all of the oxidation numbers needs to be zero, and every cell has a set of oxidation numbers that it may have in certain situations. Tigra00
I took biology in Highschool and it was pretty easy. My friend told me it's pretty much the same course for biology 101 in college. :P I haven't gone to college just yet (this fall!) so I dunno'. I never got to take Chemistry in Highschool. unknownmasterofnothing
Biology in college or ap bio, is very indepth than you'd want to know, unless ur in that field. A lot of memorization, which biology is.

warri0r45
I'm really enjoying my science classes at school. I just find it so interesting and my teacher makes it fun. Theory Haha, yeah I used to love doing experiments. I was known as the guy who did all the work, so my mates would just much around. :P The way i liked it. I took senior chemistry and biology i.e. studied them for 2 years each. I'm doing a science course at uni this year and hope to major in biochemistry. The reason for this is probably the assignment I did on protiens in grade 12 chem. I found it so interesting, and as a result, got straight A's for it, so I know thats what I want to do and would be good at. I also did an assignment on the question 'will humans continue to evolve' for senior bio. Incredibly interesting and again, I got straight A's. I'd just like to say that i don't mean to brag at all, just to show you guys where my interests lie. : Hey great topic by the way Lionheart, something will definately spark up that we can chat about soon. assassin_696
I enjoy nearly all the sciences I do at school, but physics is the only one that i'm looking to take any further. Hopefully to degree level. I find physics concepts so fascinating, especially theoretical physics. I threw myself into a project late last year at school and ended up making it surprisingly detailed. The general topic idea was space, but I focused on black holes which had to encompass relativity and quantum mechanics. I found it so interesting to research and do. If anyone's interested I could copy and paste the text into this topic in very small text :P I don't know how to upload word docs. Celt23
but I focused on black holes which had to encompass relativity and quantum mechanics Did you know Stephen Hawking is starting to think black holes don't exist? There was something on the Discovery Channel about it, but I don't really remember. And quantum theory is my favorite area of physics, I got interested in it off schwordinger's cat. warri0r45
I just thought I'd share an artice about the accountability of science. The system for the search of knowlege that science has set up over the years, is, in my opinion, what makes science so trustable, no matter whether you are discussing theories or facts. The accountability and integrity of the system means that the false is forgotten as the truth is held on to, until a better explination or more hard facts arrive. This is also why I believe in evolution. Obviously many of you would know there is solid evidence for evolution yet people still question the gaps. The strength of science will take on these doubts and be accountable for any flaws found or changes to be made, thus assuring the closest model to what actually happened in the past. Just thought I'd share why I believe science is the best tool to use when searching for the truth.
timmay929
I have a couple questions about different branches of science. 1. What kind of science is the one where you go over things like the periodic table and atoms etc.. 2. If anyone has taken marine biology, how was it? I'm not sure what science I want to take next year so i'm just trying to ask questions to help figure it out. 122 Combat : 99 Hits : 99 Attack : 99 Strength97/99 Defence : 99 Fletching : 99 Woodcutting

Barihawk
I've taken astronomy and geography for sciences at Uni. I love the physical sciences, try to stay away from organic sciences (they are HARD). Love learning what makes the world tick. My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. zeekyhbomb
I took Biology last year, I enjoyed it a lot, I like the more hands on things, like the dissection etc. Chemistry is tough for me, I'm really no good at the maths and thats what Chemistry is. I really enjoyed science and was good at it up until Chemistry, I guess its Anatomy next year and if I really want to... Physics senior year. :ohnoes:

I went into the exam with a 69, and im not sure if i passed the exam :( i really hope i pass though, even by just a little. P.S. im trying to find the website, but there was one that our bio teacher directed us to for free dvd lectures, books, ect. ill find it soon. Edit! Found the site http://www.hhmi.org/ So ya, this site is excellent for getting free stuff. I ordered about 6 items (Although it took me about 2 months to get it) There was absolutely no cost, not even shipping. I recommend the evolution one, as it makes perfect sense, and is being shown to a bunch of high school students (like all the lectures) so its not to hard for anyone to understand any of the lectures. Rebdragon
I love science, especially chemistry which I took last year. I'm the kind of guy who likes to look at the little things before I get to the big picture... when I see an object, I like to think of it not as one thing, but an intricate culmination of many atoms. I like examining the world down to the point of the atom or even smaller... which is why I like Chem, and Fullmetal Alchemist (hawt show), so much. I'm taking Physics next year, so I'll see what that's like, it seems pretty interesting. [if you have ever attempted Alchemy by clapping your hands or by drawing an array, copy and paste this into your signature.] Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.
