Guide to Shades of Mor'ton Mini-Game

The following is a guide to the Shades of Mor'ton Mini-game. Data collected has been gathered by various members of the Tip.it Community and the progress of that collection can be seen Here

This guide is still a Work in Progress!

Premise:

The Temple in Mor'ton is overrun with deadly shades who attack the temple. It is up to you to repair the temple and kill the shades around the temple for great rewards. The reason why you're down in Mor'ton kiling shades and rebuilding the temple is so that you can earn Fine Cloths which can later be used for Splitbark armor.

Quests needed to have completed:

Priest In Peril

Shades of Mor'ton

Quests that are a great help:

In Search of the Myreque

Nature Spirit

In Aid of the Myreque

This guide is broken down into multiple sections: General Information, Getting There, The temple, Slaying Shades, Burning Shades, Splitbark Armour, and The Afflicted

General Information:

The goal of this mini-game is to accquire fine cloth from the Shade's tomb. To do that you must repair and or defend the temple against shades. Doing either of those tasks will net you "Sanctity". Sanctity is what allows you to create Olive Oil into Sacred oil.

After getting the temple up to 100% repair state with the group of people you're with you can then light the Fire Altar if it appears sanctified (a message in your chatbox will tell you if the altar is ready to be lit or not, so keep an eye out for it). The Temple must always be at 100% Repair State if you want to be able to make Sacred oils! You can light the altar with a tinderbox (which gives you 10xp towards firemaking) and then you can use Olive Oil (or Serum 207) on the flame. To turn your Olive Oil into Sacred Oil you will need to have at least 10% Sanctity (in actuallity you need 14% sanctity to actually make a sacred oil as it draws away 3.5% of your sanctity when made). Simply click on the Olive oil and then click on the Flaming Fire Altar.

Map of the General Area:

shademapez9.png

Getting There

You'll need a Druid Pouch (attainable at the Nature Altar in Mort Myre Swamp) and a Blessed Silver Sickle is a benefit (to protect you from the Swamp Disease)

Get to Canifis whichever way you can (Teleport to it via Kharyll teleport, teleport of Port Phasmatys and run to Canifis, Run to it from Varrock/The temple on the Salve) and now you have a couple options, firstly you can go south through the Swamp and risk attacks from Ghasts who will rot your food if you do not have a Druid Pouch. If you've completed the In Search of the Myreque quest you may use the secret tunnel south of the Canifis Bar but you still need to run past through a swamp area with Ghasts. If you bring along the Ring of Charos and want to ride back on the boat (and brave the swamp again and go back through the secret tunnel) you can do so for free, otherwise it will cost 10 gp.

It is my suggestion that if you are serious about doing Shade Burning/Slaying you complete the In Aid of the Myreque quest to unlock the Burgh De Rott Bank and thus eliminate any need for travel through swamps.

The Temple:

There are two roles at the temple. One is repairing the temple and the other is defending the temple.

-Repairing the Temple:

Items Needed:

Swamp Paste

Hammer (or Flametar hammer costing 13,000)

Limestone Bricks

Timber Beams

-Tips about Supplies:

-If you have not used Serum 207(p) on at least Razmiere the General Store owner it would be wise to do so during your first run.

-Using a chisel on plain limestone which you can mine or purchase from the Builders Store is a cheaper way of gathering Limestone Bricks

-Swamp paste can be made by using Swamp Tar with flour and cooking it on a range. Making large quantities and bringing them with you will significantly reduce your expenses.

Repairing the temple requires you to have at least five swamp paste, one timber beam, and one Limestone Brick. The more you have the greater your resources. When first building or repairing the temple you will run through your physical supplies very quickly but your Resources number will remain high and you can "feed" off of your resources percent and continue to build without any physical resources until you reach 0% resources. If there is no temple at the time you will need to click again every time you lay down a new brick. Otherwise it's simply click once and you will continually build until your resources reach zero.

To be effective in building you should have an even amount of Timber beams and Limestone Bricks and then five swamp paste for every Brick/Beam that you have. If you keep one chisel, one Hammer, and only have Bricks, Beams, and Paste left for your inventory the max you can hold is 12 Beams, 12 Bricks, and you'll need at least 60 Swamp paste and you'll have one slot open. For every Resource percent you use you'll receive about 72-76 experience points in Crafting.

-Defending the Temple:

The Loar Shades are only level 40 so most people can handle these shades. If you're going to be fighting the shades hand to hand then put on your best armor and weapon. The key ingredient to this would be the Salve Amulet. It increases your damage and accuracty against Shades and so is extremely effective to use. The Gadderhammer is said to be extremely effective as well but against the Loar Shades a regular weapon will suffice. If you plan on Maging it bring what you can that will give you good melee defence as well as allow you to cast your spells effectivly, again the Salve Amulet is all too important here. If you're set on maging than this may be a good opportunity to use the Crumble Undead spell.

Since you'll obviously be taking damage you'll be needing food. You have three options to get food. Go back and forth to Canifis through the Myreque Shortcut, be sure to bring the Ring of Charos for a free boat ride deep into the swamps. Go to Burgh De' Rott bank if you've completed in Aid of the Myreque and lastly take a large supply of your food noted and sell it to the general store and buy it back for yourself (the least effective method, do that ONLY if you've not completed in Search of the Myreque).

While doing all of the repairing and the fighting you should be gaining Sanctity and thus using it to make Sacred Oil. Here is a generic route that is fairly effective. Step 1.) Gather your full amount of supplies or foods. 2.) Repair the temple or Fight Shades and earn Sanctity. 3.)Once you reach 100% sanctity and your supplies are gone (not neccessarily your resources percent) or your food is gone run to the Mor'ton General Store and buy as many sets of four as you can (At most 24 total). 4.)Use one Olive oil(3) on the other three olive oils in your row thus making rows of one empty vial and three sets of Olive Oil(4). This will allow you to use your sanctity more effectively and you are not wasting it on an extra vial. 5.) Create Sacred Oils at the temple. 6.)Run to a bank (or if you are unable to do so or wanting to use them right away, drop the empty vials and slay some shades and bring them out and burn them) and deposit them. 7.)Go back to the Temple. Now repeat those steps until you have as many Sacred Oils as you want.

--Slaying Shades

There are several types of Shades. Each one increasing in difficulty Loar, Phrin, Riyl, Asyn and Fyre Shades. The Loar Shades are located around the Temple in Mor'ton and are the weakest. The rest are inside the Shade Tombs which is under lock and key. Keys are given by the Shades after burning them (see the Burning Shades Section for more Information).

The tomb is fairly large but is completely open ground and no safe place for Ranged or Magic attack. The most widely used method for killing shades is melee. Inside the tomb you will find doors which are various colors: Bronze, Steel, Black, and Silver. Each door can only be opened by their assigned key as well as any key above them. For example a steel door can NOT be opened by a bronze key but instead can be opened by a steel, black, and silver key. Certain Doors lead to treasure rooms in which you will use up your key by opening a chest. Other doors lead to the further depths of the dungeon. No DOOR will use up a key, only using a key on a chest will remove the key from your inventory.

To fight the shades you have to take in account their level in relation to your own. It's just like fighting other monsters, but now you want every single drop they give. It is important to keep the right amount of food so you're not wasting any food. You could be killing the monsters very easily and be forced to eat a piece of food to pick up their remains. Actual combat wise you should take your best armor, the food that is needed in relation to their level and yours, the Salve Amulet as always, AND a set of Monks Robes for prayers. The Protect from Melee prayer is a very useful method for getting in a few last minutes shades with no risk to yourself. Using your prayers frequently should only be done if you can gain access to the Nature Altar in the nearby Mort Myre Swamp.

shadespray9un.png

I cannot give exact advice to each person, but think it as just regular combat, because that's what it is. If you're twice the level of your enemy, you know that you'll have little need for food, if the enemy is twice your level you know that you may rely more on Prayer than food. The overall advice would be bring your best Melee armour, some food (dependent upon the monsters level relating to you), and if you have 43 Prayer (Protect from Melee) bring along Monk's Robes and if possible a God book. If you're going on a prolonged amount of Prayer then bring little food but more Prayer Potions, if you've completed the Rum Deal Quest you could bring along the Holy Wrench to add to the prayer points a Prayer Potion gives.

Training:

Many people consider this place to be a great training spot. The lower level shades (level 60 Phrin) are aggressive towards anyone who is level 120 or below and are easy to kill without taking too much damage yourself. Fighting here until you run low on food and then concentrationg on gathering their remains for a shot at getting Fine Cloth can be a profitable venture.

Here are the Various Levels of the Shades

Loar Shade (40)

Phrin Shade (60)

Riyl Shade (80)

Asyn Shade (100)

Fiyr Shade (120)

--Shade Burning

Shade Burning can net you only two things: Keys and Coins. The coins are always helpful but we're really after the Keys. The Keys allow you to open up chests in the Shade Tomb and get various items, coins, and most importantly Fine Cloth. The best way of doing this would be to stock up on Sacred Oils/Pyre Logs of your choosing and the Shades Remains and then go for an all out burn fest with them. A Word of caution. Be sure you bring EVERYTHING you need, if you leave the pyre that you've already set up then whatever is on it will be gone.

To prepare your Pyre Logs you will need your log of choice and the Sacred Oils that you've made. You cannot use multiple single dose Sacred Oils on the Logs, which is why creating 4 dose oils is the best way to go. Making hundreds of pyre logs can be tedious, but if you set up your inventory properly you can get it done much faster.

Logs/Oak Logs (2 Dose Required): In this setup you go log, vial down a row, log vial. When you get down to the bottom of the first column it will then go vial, log and the last column you will need to click log, vial, vial, log, log, vial, log. One space remains open unfortunately.

oaksetup3wh.png

Willog/Maple/Teak/Mahogany Logs (3 Doses Required): I haven't found a GOOD way of setting up your inventory for preparing Pyre Logs while using 4 dose Sacred Oils. Your best bet would be to plan ahead when getting Sacred Oils, if you're going to be using Willows or not.

Yew Logs/Magic Logs (4 Doses Required): Simply go Vial, Log from first row to second row. The last row goes log, vial, log, vial.

logsetup7md.png

To burn the Shades you require Pyre Logs, the remains of the Shade, and then of course a tinderbox. Funeral Pyres are scattered around the edge of Mor'ton (See Map in the General Information area above). You will need to use the Pyre Logs on the Pyre and then the Remains on the Pyre. Once the two have been placed on the Pyre you will need to set it a blaze by using a tinderbox on it. A short animation will play as you see the Shade's spirit/soul is put to rest/destroyed. Then a puff of smoke (Such as how an Imp appears) will appear over a small pedestal around the Pyre and you will receive your Key or Coins. An Interesting Note is that the Shade Spirit you see from the Pyre is actually an NPC for a brief period of time, one with no interactive uses except for an examine but it becomes a yellow dot on your Mini-Map. A reason why I bring this up is because if you're going for speed with the burning you can sometimes instead of using your Pyre Logs with the Pyre itself you will still use it on the Shade Spirit and thus disrupt your pattern. The only solution is to wait a few seconds before using the logs with the pyre.

Keys From Shade Burning

When burning the shades you can either get a key or some coins, the coins are negligible as you're really after the keys! That's what leads to treasure!

The value of the Type of keys goes as follows. Brown, Steel, Black, and Silver. The value of the Eyelets(Handle) goes along these lines. Crimson, Brown, Red, Black, and Purple.

--Splitbark Armour

Splitbark is a powerful Armour for wizards, it gives you a decent Magic bonus AND gives some protection against Melee. The stats of the Splitbark Armour can be found in Tip's "Guide" for Splitbark.

To get your Splitbark Armour you will need your 11 Fine Cloth, and along with that, 11 Bark from Hollow Trees and 77,000 gold pieces. The trees are located in the Haunted Woods. The Woodcutting level is not extravagent, but there are aggressive monsters in the Haunted Woods, so dress for trouble.

shadescut3id.png

You'll see the Wizard Dressed in Full Splitbark talk to him and select each item individually. Once you've done that you'll be a proud owner of Full Splitbark Armour. I must attest from personal experiences with the armour that it is decent against fellow mages, you will be hit less often by magic and when they resort to attacking you with their staff you're more likely to take less damage than wearing other Wizardly robes.

shadewizard9us.pngshadesplit8kb.png

--The Afflicted

Down in the Mor'ton Village the good citizens have been afflicted by the evils down there. They are walking Zombies but still alive, we know that they are conscious of their affliction and yet are helpless to fight against it. We have helped Razmierel, the general store owner so why not the other locals as well?

I've decided to add this in seeing it as a useful tool if you're new to the area. The afflicted in Mor'ton are ranging in levels from 30 to 37. But we will not be fighting them. Using a Serum 207(Tarromin + Ashes in a Water Filled Vial) on them we can receive various items.

Items:

Herbs-Always Tarromin

Coins (10-23)

Regular Logs(1-5 unnoted)

Waterfilled Vials/Empty Vials: 1-3

Olive Oil (Dosage of 1-4):1-3

Swamp Paste:8-10

Hammer

The Drops from killing the Afflicted will be very different and you should consult the Bestiary for it. I am assuming that the purpose of being able to "cure"(That not being the best word as after about 60 seconds they'll become afflicted again) them is really only for people who did not come prepared for the quest, seeing as how they give logs, hammer, swamp paste, and herbs that are ALWAYS Tarromin, I'm guessing that this was for people who didn't bring any Money down but brought plenty of Serum 207's. Nowhere near as useful or as rewarding as the Shade Tomb though.

Hey everyone! I've been updating this guide whenever a new thought occurs to me and have been reading it again and again to make sure it's all down and a complete newbie to the mini-game could understand and do it with an expert's skill.

I just got 90 Combat from Pest Control and so I'm going back down to Mor'ton to start Shade Slaying starting with the Loars, seeing as they're the easiest :D . I'll be posting up some more information in the next couple of weeks regarding Chests and whatnot.

He he I just found this topic. One thing is missing, you dont even have pictures of the temple broken, in progress, and fully built. Also instead of saying to have it at 100%, show them what it looks like too.

world5913ad.png

Eh? Well thats what I saw that needed some work on it. Also inventory shots are always key too. If a guide has too much writing and reading, I fall asleep, but pictures keep my attention. Keep it up right now tefda!

A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

It's certain Fiyr drop ALL the silver keys possible. I have to check the weaker shades again.

Sorry to bump the old guide but I just updated with some more information and whatnot and hopefully this will get someones attention and then they'll start doing Shades as well. It's extremely profitable if you work on Asyn Shades or Fiyr shades. Also Splitbark Tops go like Hot Cakes to Mage Pkers.

Sorry to raise this guide from the dead, but this really does deserve some serious kudos. I think we need to bring up this project again, it brings in some hefty firemaking xp.

Good guide but if you want to save a few hours on the Long run,

Go to the temple with just ur building stuff, build and get the sacreed oil. When you have as close as possible to 28 (4) pots, bank. Kepp repeating until you have a desireable amount. Then "pyre" the logs. Note them and bring some money. The go to the tombs with only ur weapons to kill shades. Sell the logs to the genral store, and buy back with money. You can also do this for food. i have used this way and i find it more efficient then going back and forth between killing and geting logs
