Boston Marathon Murders
Red light cameras suck, and I plan on never moving anyplace that uses them, or traffic cameras in general, because I like driving on roads where everyone, including the police, feel free to add 5-10 to the limit at their own discretion, 15 on the highways between 4 and 7 am. I don't think I have ever seen our police (specifically the RCMP, not the city police) drive the limit.

Today...
Good to hear RPG, though someday I hope we get to hear the story (I am going to assume you aren't going to want to talk about it at least until the judicial system does it's thing). I was watching TV, and the cops have a suspect in custody, and while it turns out he didn't kill their victem, they tie his gun to a few other murders, because his is a hitman for the mob. Suddenly it hits me how stupid that seems. If I killed someone, be it as a gang member, or as a hit man, or anything else, my purpose in life following the crime would almost certainly involve things such as never telling anyone, and making sure the weapon I used could never ever be traced back to the murder. It's not even hard to do. If I was planning on maybe using the gun again the future, I would remove the barrel and replace it. If it was a crime of passion or something, I would just skip to step two which is to go to home depot, get a hacksaw, and cut the barrel/gun into a few pieces so that no one can fire a bullet through it to get a groove pattern. Then I would take the pieces, and drop them in the water. Any body of water should do, as long as it's bigger than a ditch or water hazzard on a golf course, and not the closest one to the crime scene. At the very least, I think I would put some tiny nicks in a few bullets and shoot them, to scratch the barrel a bit. At the very least, that should make it a bit harder to match bullets to the gun. So I guess my real wondering is if there are people who are actually that stupid, that they would keep the same gun they have used to commit previous murders entirely in tact and on their person during another job. If this is your career, surely you can't possibly be that stupid. To me, that's on par with handing the liquor store you actual drivers license, then deciding you'd going to rob them. Given that this isn't a hypothetical situation, I'm going to assume that yes, there are probably people out there who are in fact that stupid that they would willingly keep a gun on their person that links them to multiple murders.

Hmm. I could always change one of the other censored words to cabbage. I even have an idea for which word I might choose that would make sense (as in, both nouns), and add some humor. I'm not sure I have ever seen it come up, but all the common ones that are nouns already have something (that is, wagon and garden tool). I am unsure if I would want to revive cabbage on another word though. I could always do something like 'brassicas' (or even red cabbage) though to revive the spirit.

Boston Marathon Murders
Apparently Canada because we have Tim Hortons and they don't  Also, about not worrying if your not committing a crime, its a lot more fun for everyone if you actually take the comment in context, because you'll actually get different viewpoints. Unless you love of the grid in the middle of absolutely no where, and never interact with the rest of the world, you are probably not going to find anyone who is for having SWAT randomly storm their house just in case. And if you do live totally off the grid in the middle of no where, then you don't have an internet connection and aren't posting here. As for me, I don't mind. Aside from having preventative qualities, it seems like a really easy way to help the police catch people. The only exceptions are that I disagree with red light cameras on the grounds that they exist for the sole purpose of making people slam on the breaks (as in, they cause accidents), and pad the police budget. I'm also not going to support cameras that have a view of you while using the bathroom. Finally, I am not going to support cameras that can see beyond the visible spectrum that have a view of private property (such as thermal imaging cameras) on the grounds that humans are using to thinking in terms of visible light, and are likely to focus any attention to their expectation of privacy as such (you would for example, need special curtains to block a thermal camera in some cases). This also extends to technology such as Van Eck phreaking in public surveillance tools. That's the sort of stuff that needs to have a warrant.

Today...
Today I spent some time actually trying to figure out how graphics processors work, and also found a lovely video illustrating the basics of CPU operation, to the point I now have a conceptual map in my head of how they work purely based on the clock and logic gates. Information of GPU's is frustratingly hard to come by, though I did find out what a CUDA core is, though I have yet to find a satisfactory explaination of AMD's use of stream processors. I feel I am missing some intermediate level of knowledge, but I at least have a bit better of an idea of what affects their performance, and how things like their memory actually works (which is totally backwards to how I thought apparently). I've also found out that GPU's are surprisingly resiliant to heat. It seems CPU's usually have a maximum operating temperature in the 60's ©, where most modern GPU's will top out a little past boiling. It is however my understanding that 70C would still be considered hot, and by the time you reach 80 you are definitely shortening the remaining life of the hardware. I else expect bad things happen if your GPU actually gets hot enough to boil water (if nothing else, you'll probably cook everything else in the case). Also, speaking of unsatisfactory answers. I am wondering if anyone knows if starring at white paper for extended periods of time (like during an exam) causes colour fatigue in the eye across the entire spectrum (though I am particularly interested with losing sensitivity to red). I noticed during today's exam towards the end of this morning exam that the skin on my hand seemed to have mostly turned grey, which isn't exactly expected (and I am not exaggerating, to me it looked a bit like a zombie hand), but I'm not even sure that's possible. My assumption (and this is exactly what you want the back of your mind to be working on during a calc exam) is that starring at white paper under fluorescent lights for more than 2 hours dulled my ability to see red a bit, and if I went a bit pale while being stressed out, that could make my skin look grey to me. Might I also say it's actually kind of depressing when you work through an entire term of calculus only to learn that limits, derivatives, and integrals, are mechanics like addition or subtraction used to solve other types of equations? Not that they aren't each useful on their own. Derivatives and Integrals are massively important as a stand alone thing (I have no idea what limits are used for, except higher orders of math), but so is addition. Sequences, Series, Parametric Equations, Differential Equations, Polar Graphing. It's also fun to realize that at some point I will probably be doing Differential Equations in particular at some point that make the ones I suck at now look like child's play. I've also realized over the course of this term that my trigonometry is a pretty big weakness, and over the summer I actually need to dedicate some time to learning that stuff over again.

We absolutely hold our staff to standards, and yes, there is a code of conduct. However, part of being staff here is maintaining yourself as a member of the community, not always being a moderator, or a crewbie, and just being a user. If that means allowing our staff to get away with a "shitty" or "crap" here or there, so be it. If a staff member adopted it as their word of the week, that would be an issue, but we have no problem with staff being casual where appropriate. As it applies to moderation, we actually get a lot of benefit out of being both staff and users in the form of higher quality moderation as well as co-operation. These are the potential joys to having a community that is staffed by it's won peers. That said, you have every right to be offended. Everyone has their own level of formality and so forth that they prefer. Alg summed it up nicely, that there are perhaps higher things up the priorities than maintaining a constant business level standard of communication.

HTML5 beta discussion
As a point about the water, most of the water in game in the beta client right now is a placeholder. I believe only the River Lum (well, most of it) has an actual water texture that might be making it into the game (I don't know if it's supposed to be final, or a work in progress). As for the colours. There is a time and place for everything I suppose. I wouldn't mind things like the grass dialing it back a bit, especially seeing as I am fond of darker grasses anyway. It's the sort of thing I might expect in the fair dimension, if the fairy dimension had green grass. But I know the trees didn't jump out at me the last time I was playing, at least not for colour. My first issue was that I couldn't see when moving between Catherby and Seers along the road, because the trees pretty much block your entire field of view. On my way into Tiranwyn, I also noticed starting north of Ardounge that all the trees in this game really do looks exactly the same, and it's kind of disconcerting. Everything about them is unattural, from them all being the same model to the way they are so regularly placed. Combined with the flat terrain, and it's like the Uncanny Valley of trees, it just feels wrong. I'm also coming around to the idea that the world map needs to be upscaled a bit. I didn't mind at first, but it gets more and more rediculous as time goes on. That all the dungeons can see each other now is a given issue I think, but I'm pretty sure I can see Entrana from Catherby (depending on how good my geography is, but I think that's the right island), and by see I mean it's 50m away tops, and a child could swim to it. It's a tough problem though, because not only would upscaling the map surely be loads of fun for Jagex, but it makes the world for the Java client quite lonely I think. It's going to be hard to reconcile that.

Runescape 3 is coming this summer...(BTS Bonus edition)
I found out a bit about why firefox specifically will not work with the BETA yet. According to Mod Chris E's comment on the second page of [qfc]334-335-90-64905385[/qfc], the problem is this bug. The bug is quite old, and I gather from reading it that this has been a very large, and complicated, fix. RuneScape requiring it has bumped the priority up, and they now hope to have it resolved by the end of March. Jagex is also reaching out to offer assistance, as they hope to have Firefox compatible with the new client by the time it goes live. So yeah, awesome news for Firefox users I think. It also looks like work on tablet support is currently slated for next year, with the possibility that by years end Jagex might be able to convert the HTML5 client into an app for iOS devices should apple not open up support for WebGL on Safari. Revised Notice - Beta NDA Lifted
I believe that's Mod Chris E, but I could be wrong. The NDA was removed from Mod Sevens post in any event. I never saved a copy though, and I did take a peak, but I couldn't find the thread.

Whilst your point is good you are talking some nonsense: 1) They aren't just using people with the best computer. I know plenty from the random selection with god awful systems, not to mention all the gold and silver guys aren't all on good systems. They are using people with a variety of systems to test how it works on the variety and address issues. 2) They are not trying to make it run on phones at all for now. In the QA on youtube from Tues they expressly said for now they are only focussing on the pc and are entirely ignoring tablets/phones. My bad then. I assumed that for the people they were selecting, they would aim for mostly people with medium and high end machines so that they wouldn't have half their beta testers unable to get the client working on low, if that, for the first week or so. The second point doesn't surprise me, though I am still assuming this is the ultimate goal down the line or else this doesn't make much sense (the format of the new client).

So. Tiranwyn (elf land), is not a good idea in the beta client. Perfectly stable for me most of the time. Crashed it going through the mountain pass (why not? Beautiful spot I don't visit much), and again shortly after after getting past a couple obstacles. Thinking I might end up rescueing myself with the java client. Something about that area is setting it off. Also, if I avoid combat, I think I make the client playable. I am using the high render distance, and keeping bloom off, as well as setting the water detail to low, which is sometimes enough to get the fps high enough, and stable enough, to be playable. Other times I need to trade between AA or shadows, as both are using a lot of my available power it seems. I guess, as long as I tailor my settings to the area and situation, it works. Sort of. Good for fishing or something probably, though the bank is a bit problematic.

@RPG, not sure if the video is to your taste or not, but I have been watching a group called code zero gaming play it in multiplayer. This is one of my favourite videos by them, nice variety, not too much goofing off, and a fantastic (to me) police chase in the second half. Actually, I think there are a couple in this one. http://youtu.be/q21bb28XSsA

Unoptomized shadows are so bad for the GPU. Actually, I think shadows in general are pretty intense. I can't believe I hadn't yet thought to see if that's what nukes me at max. I learned from GTA 4, aka the port someone slapped together in an afternoon to melt peoples PC's. In that game it's the shadows that really kill you. I was actually playing the beta for a few minutes on max before I noticed the shadows. So awesome to have realistic shadows fro everything. Water, draw distance, and shadows. Awesome. I do hope it doesn't take long to sort some thing out though, since with everything on my gpu is only running at 40% load, which tells me there is a scary bad bottle neck going on in there (graphical detail seems to have no impact at all on the CPU).

Keep in mind that the client they have us running has very little optimization done, and is much much much more demanding than the final version will be. Right now they are using the players with the best computers to find bugs, and once the client is sorted they can make it nice and efficient. Remember, they are trying to make something a phone can run. It only gets better from here.

Runescape 3 is coming this summer...(BTS Bonus edition)
I remember I had to do something to make the bestiary work. Not the faintest idea what it was, just that there was a problem with the local storage. Downloadable client is not really an option here, it would just be Jagex recreating chrome, because the interface has to be run inside a web browser (a program that can handle HTML5 and javascript). The game runs poorly, though I'm not entirely sure why. Best guess is that I am running out of VRAM, since my graphics card runs pretty steady around 50%, and my CPU is putting out significantly less effort. As a means of testing, I set my GPU to the highest AA and AS settings it could handle, and it murdered the frame rate (from 7-11 to about 1-3), without increasing the GPU load at all. So until I can get the card to give up RAM usage, that's bets guess. The game is quite pretty, bugs not withstanding. The player avatar does not look good, refusing to smooth out at x8 anti-aliasing, and displaying what I would call pixel crawl. I am going to look into getting a newer graphical driver later, since I am a version or two back, mostly because every time I try to update it, my wireless card breaks the next time the computer starts (I suspect the catalyst control center, which my computer runs a custom version of that for some reason also ties into the wireless adapter). I climbed white wolf mountain, and I agree with the above. A bit more draw distance would go a long way in certain areas, and the water draw distances are clearly broken. The ocean to the south just sort of ends, while the land next to it goes a bit further before it fogs out (the water has no fog). I also noticed a lot of buildings missing parts outright, mostly on the upper floors. Still, this is pretty promissing. Once they sort out the rampant bugs and optomize it, it should be a pretty sweet deal. Unfortunately, I don't think it's really far enough along for me to use as my main client. I can have a bigger world space, or I can have the better looking one confined to the immediate area.

Runescape 3 is coming this summer...(BTS Bonus edition)
Not that everyone hasn't already figured it out, but tip.it officially recognizes that the NDA has been lifted and yadda yadda. I was in it, and it wasn't running very well, and the anti-aliasing was like 'what anti-aliasing? 2x?' so I left the game to set it to something better manually, and grab a better gpu monitoring program because the one I had was of pretty questionably use. Now the servers wont let me log back in. So yeah, going well.

Revised Notice - Beta NDA Lifted
Correct. However, the caveat is that since tip.it has no way of knowing for sure who is, and is not, part of the beta, any information protected under the NDA will be subject to enforcement, such as leaked pictures people happen across and what not. This is the only way we can reasonably hope to enforce the NDA, and is the same approach the forum moderators of the RSOF are taking. It also prevents someone who might say, leak a picture to their friends on facebook winding up in trouble with Jagex if one of their friends takes that picture and posts it here where Jagex sees it. Also, as a heads up, Jagex seem to be pretty keen to enforce this. I already know of at least one account that has been banned after the owner was caught livestreaming the beta. I expect Jagex will be keeping up with this, going after users who livestream or post videos after the fact, and I fully expect them to watch the fansite forums for similar breeches.

Runescape 3 is coming this summer...(BTS Bonus edition)
Ranting about the NDA can now be directed here, where I fully expect every person here to agree with you (you can also do it in rants I suppose). And yes, this is not how NDA's usually work. Usually you have to agree to it before being added to a beta, not retroactively bound by it. I expect this is an effort to try and contain the rumor mill or some such (lessons learned from the EOC beta, whatever they may be).

Revised Notice - Beta NDA Lifted
Revised Notice I am pleased to say that Jagex has lifted the NDA, though they are requesting that people hold off with the pictures and videos until the client has been further developed, to give a better demonstration of the future of RuneScape. Now that the NDA has been lifted, it will be left to our users discretion if they wish to post information about the beta. Happy Posting!
