Teenager commits suicide on webcam
So... if he wasn't being serious, and this was only a cry for help, you should just turn away and forget about it? I'd help him anyway. The guy's clearly in trouble. Whether he's serious about killing himself is neither here nor there. It just adds to the gravity of the situation. A) He was bipolar. During an episode your mind doesn't exactly think straight and defeatist attitudes towards the world around you are a common symptom of that. I'd also be interested to know if the pills he was taking to control his bipolar condition would have had any impact on his mentality at the time; B) Maybe the reason he was on the Internet is because he felt the "real world" was completely closed to him, ergo, there was no other place to appeal for help? This story runs much deeper than "a looney kid kills himself on the 'Net".

Prostitution, should it be legal?
"Didn't work out" seems to be a misinterpretation of what was said. Try "sex slavery". I'm not interested in crime stats or so-called 'rights to freedom'. It dehumanises the main issue in this debate. No woman, or man, should ever be forced into selling their dignity, their body, or their sexual discretion for money, and for the state to turn round and say, "We're not only gonna decriminalise it, we'll even run the brothels to sell yourself in!", instead of providing tangible ways to get them out of the situation they are in to lift them out of debt is horrendous.

Gun Control
I don't even see any need for a gun. The chances of Gordon Brown declaring a military coup are so insanely minute it's barely even worth contemplating. In fact, the very image of him standing outside Buckingham Palace and declaring marshal law using the Queen's troops is hilarious. Why a whole nation of 300 million people needs a right to own a gun, I'll never know.

Prostitution, should it be legal?
Sounds similar to the anti-pornography arguments. It's more likely that the male dominance seen in the mass media, the porn industry, sex work etc. caters to a pre-existing ideology about gender roles, rather than creates or fuels that ideology. You presume I'm fine with all types of pornography? Most types I'm fine with, but I find pornography which depicts a false image of sex as a male dominated process in which the female is submissive deeply misleading and in some cases inappropriate. There are some sites out there which depict rape (although it's obviously not rape, it's acted). Are those sites OK for general viewing, just because the woman in the film agrees to be portrayed in that context? It provides a distorted reality of a sexual relationship that will affect some people's perception of women, and I'm not obliged as a liberal to shrug and say, "Oh well, it's their choice". The same goes with prostitution. That same argument could have been applied to racism all those years ago. The image of a movie director filming a story now about white people being dominant over black people, and then using the excuse "I'm only catering to an ideology that already exists", even if the black actors consented, is ridiculous. I think that any society should have certain standards in regards to how groups are perceived and treated, and I don't see why that should be any different for women. As far as pornography and prostitution are concerned, it's one of very, very few areas I am more conservative in. I promote tolerance and respect, and as far as I'm concerned, prostitution is a very gender-specific trade that only fuels intolerance towards women. In my opinion, despite being a liberal in almost every topic elsewhere, these areas are the point where liberalism goes a little dizzy.

Worlds #1 Sport?
Are you kidding me? We wear pads, doesn't that make us the smarter country? Some of the hits you see in the NFL would never occur in Rugby (I've watched both), because you would literally die from it. When I go home over Winter Holidays, I'll take a picture of my facemask from my Semi-Pro team and upload it for you. I would literally be dead without that thing. They're both hard games. In Rugby League, you can be making impact with G-forces up to 9. For context, Alton Tower's Oblivion ride goes to 4.5 G. In fact, if we're going by impact, F1 has to be the toughest sport. Kubica crashed last year in the Canadian Grand Prix. The FIA estimate he experienced 75 G, and there have been worse crashes.

Abolish "Attempted Murder"
What does it matter whether someone's dead or not? If someone's dead, it won't help to put the killer behind bars, just like it won't help to put someone behind bars when no-one's dead. I believe that rehabilitation is necessary and that punishment serves nothing. Therefore, someone who kills someone and someone who fails in killing someone should be treated equally. The outcome is completely irrelevant. Then you also have to get rid of serial murder. If consequences are not taken into consideration by a judge when sentencing then it frankly doesn't matter whether they've killed one person or ten. Under your logic, they've tried to kill someone, so should be treat equally. You cannot expect normal citizens to accept responsibility for the consequences of their own actions, and then have the whole system refuse to take consequence into consideration during sentencing. It's quite blatant hypocrisy. There are reasons for there to be a distinction between attempted murder and a successful one, and there is not only the justification of "they failed" for that distinction. Secondly, your argument presumes rehabilitation is achieved in prison for a murderer. I'd like to see some sort of criminological report which supports that statement.

Teenager commits suicide on webcam
I wonder if all those people who are happy to sit here and call the boy stupid for committing suicide even bothered to read the bit where it said he was suffering from bipolar disorder? The people who should be called stupid are the idiots on the other end of the webcam egging him on. It's another example of what can happen when certain people use the anonymity of the Internet for their own twisted personal gain. If this had happened outside of the Internet, they'd have been arrested and charged for a hefty sentence.

Abolish "Attempted Murder"
There seems to be a complete breakdown of common sense here. Let's compare consequences: Murder: Someone's dead Attempted: No one's dead. OK, it's not that black and white, but the impact of the crime has to be a factor in the sentence. Quite clearly, the impact of attempted murder is not equal to the impact of a successful one, therefore, the punishments should NOT be equal. Secondly, prison is not a rehabilitation camp. People generally don't just murder for the sheer Hell of it. They murder because they have a motive, and being put behind bars does not instantly remove that motive. You can keep someone locked up for 5 years or 20 years, unless the motive has gone, they might try it again anyway. Hence, you either keep them locked up until they die (to prevent them doing it), or you accept that the amount of time spent behind bars in comparison to murder does not really matter in stopping the crime from happening again.

Prostitution, should it be legal?
venomai, many of the claims in that article are completely unsubstantiated. Frankly, I've no way of telling whether this man is telling the truth or whether he's pulling numbers out of his [wagon]. It's a poor article and there's a few claims in it which made me raise my eyebrow. For one, attacking all anti-prostitution campaigners for using sweeping generalisations, and then using sweeping generalisations throughout the article to argue the case for legalisation is quite clearly a logical fallacy. If it's two consenting adults, and one is fine with being paid to have sex with, then I've no issues with that. It's none of my business and I don't happen to find selling sex particularly immoral. I would also like to see greater protection for women and legalisation would be one way to see that. What I take issue to is the wider social impact prostitution has on an area. People say the problem would be solved by moving all prostitution into a brothel. It wouldn't. People in the local vicinity would complain about it, the area around would become a hotspot for drug dealers and the crime that is associated with it. Moving all prostitutes into brothels still fails to create a distinction between "sex survivors" and those who are doing it completely out of their own will to make money or enjoyment. It also creates a new cultural attitude that it is fine to get whatever you want in this world so long as the price is right, sex included, and that is not an attitude I want my kids to be having. Given so many prostitutes are women, it also further fuels an attitude in some members of the male population that males are dominant to females by circumstance. It is not the act itself I find bad, it's the wider impact. All legislation has consequences wider than the act it's trying to take effect on.

Our Generation
Kids rebel against authority. Have done since the times of ancient Greek city states. What age exactly was Joan d'Arc? It's just a fact of life, and so far as I can see, over half of children in the UK go to college and the vast majority will still get on fine with their peers. It's part of growing up, learning to see things for yourself.

Prostitution, should it be legal?
...No, it means businesses that are stuck between two equally qualified candidates should choose the candidate from an ethnic minority, or in this case, the female since they're at a general disadvantage anyway. If the white male is better, than the white male gets the job. It's still as simple as that. Positive discrimination is to stop an employer choosing a white male for the simple fact he's white or male when there are better candidates for the job, as used to happen quite frequently during the 1980s and before. As it is, only one in five of MPs sitting in the House of Commons are female, when they make up half the population. The same pattern applies for most professional occupations. That's hardly representative of Britain, is it?

Our Generation
I do think there is a decrescendo of respect. Where? And is this really exclusive to our generation or is it more representative of a wider erosion of respect in the whole of society, adults included? Personally, I come onto Tip.It, I see plenty of people my age here and there's plenty of respect for each other in comparison to the rest of the Internet. I see people my age are much more politically aware than they were a generation ago. The number of kids these days who would take the [bleep] out of a gay person, or a black person are much less than twenty years ago. I think less kids would have come out against the Iraq War twenty years ago than did five years ago. I go out, and if I'm not drinking, people my age respect that. Twenty years ago, I'd have been called weird for not wanting to get drunk. I just think we have a habit of blowing crime and disrespect out of all proportion. Forty years ago, there were riots in America. How likely do you think that is now? It doesn't. It teaches them using or threatening violence is a method of getting what they want out of someone.

There's a Minister for Prostitution? Who? Alas there is no Prostitution minister! however it falls under the home office, and the bill I mentioned is put forward by Jacqui Smith. Jacqui Smith believes women are better than men...?

Our Generation
The kids of today are no more worse than the kids of a generation ago, or the kids when Plato was still around. If you don't like popular culture, don't indulge yourself in it. I can't say I'm the norm for my age either, but I'm not gonna sit here and [bleep] about other people my age when their lives are really none of my business.

Prostitution, should it be legal?
See, with drugs and whatnot, I would say legalise it because it allows for taxation, policing, support etc. but with prostitution, my opinion's slightly different. At the end of the day, no woman (well, hardly any) wants to sell her body for sex, while conversely, people do want to take drugs. Under that analysis, it's an abuse of power. The male (let's presume it's a female prostitute) knows the woman needs the money in order to survive, or feed an addiction she might have, and they still choose to abuse that position and get what they want out of it. Whatever way you look at that, it's still incredibly immoral even if the woman has no problems with that. If you removed all the prostitutes that are forced into that position, and left the ones who want to sell their body for cash, you wouldn't be left with much of an industry to legalise. There's the difference. As for comparing rape and prostitution, please, don't insult our collective intelligence. Rape is the completely lack of regard for someone's right to refuse sexual intercourse, and a complete lack of respect for the victim. Prostitution is hardly anything like it. There's a Minister for Prostitution? Who?

NZ Rugby League Champions
Are you joking? Ireland did amazingly well. Probably better than England, but the tournament structure was skewed. Paddy Richards was a star. I just assumed to be honest that we'd do badly as League is virtually non-existent here when compared to union and union isn't even in the top 3 games played here. There was no coverage of the Irish matches on Irelands own TV network, speaks a lot about how popular it is. Because there's no major League team in Ireland. The plan is for Super League to become a European thing. That's why we're introducing a Welsh team this year, and there's plans to introduce another French team to go with Catalans in the years to come. Next stop will probably be Ireland or Scotland. Also, the "Magic Weekend" event might be hosted in Dublin in three years time after Edinburgh. Apart from a few players, most of the Ireland team has played in Super League at some point. There's as many Irish players in the Wigan squad as there are Aussies.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
Let us deal with this piece by piece. Big problems are often easier in bitesized chunks. That's what the BBC told me during my GCSEs anyway. :? Can't you see that's what you are demanding though? I'm gonna hazard a guess and say that your insecurities about the status of the relationship between you and her have flared up in the past, because usually, those sorts of things are really noticeable and they stick on people's minds. She's put into a situation where she either hangs out with you to make you feel good, even if that's not something she wants to do, or else she doesn't hang around with you and you get worked up. It's not a nice choice for her to make. I think you're too obsessed over this girl. And fine, OK, I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But you have to step back and realise that not everything you do in life has to be done with her in mind. What's wrong with letting her go out with her friends, and you and your best mate can go do something else completely unrelated? If you did that, and just left some space to breathe between the two of you I think you'd both find it much easier to deal with. That involves not texting her all the time too. If you love her, trust her. If she's worth anything, if the relationship was ever gonna go anywhere in the first place, she's going nowhere else but you. I'm sure it means nothing, although I understand it can provoke you. In all honesty, the only thing you can do is talk to her about it and seek reassurance he's not up to something. I'm sure she'll set you straight. Again, if you love her, trust her. Telling her to stop this friendship because you don't feel comfortable with it is just plain selfish and shows you as the complete gutless wonder you would be for doing so. Right... so she knew him before you, he's asked her out, she sees him everyday and she still isn't going out with him. What does that tell you? She's not interested, and no matter how much he tries to protest about that, her mind ain't changing. From the looks of things, from her actions and his attitude problem (treating her like some object you can call dibs on) it won't ever. THEN TELL HER! I don't mean to cause offence because I acted very much like this with my last relationship so I'm no better. But Jesus, there's clearly a problem with the way you trust her and the way you pick up on what she's saying. In all honesty, being someone who is entirely seeing this with no emotional connections, I think you've nothing to worry about. She seems to be a playful person who likes winding you up and getting you to laugh at yourself, but never means it in a malicious way. Sometimes, those intentions can be misinterpreted as something else, but if she didn't want to be with you, she wouldn't be. From the way you describe, she strikes me as the kind of person who wouldn't mind you being that insecure and would actually appreciate it if you just said what you think so she knows where she stands and where the boundaries are. I could tell the bolded bit from the rest of the post without needing to look at that sentence. Still, you have to recognise that she has that wall up for a reason, and if she felt like you were trying to learn everything about her, she'd fell immensely uncomfortable with that, to the point where she would start having problems. You mean well, no one's doubting that, but you have to give her that space, for her own wellbeing. Secondly, you admit it annoys you when she doesn't admit her emotions to you, and then you persist in doing the same back. I bet you had plenty on your mind after that IM conversation, after she said she was going out with mates, but I also bet you've not told her anything about those feelings. Probably through fear of upsetting her, I don't know, but still, you haven't. As you said, you're insecure. It's your mind exaggerating any negative emotions, in order to evoke a response. You need to find some way of coping with that. On a personal level, I'm quite emotionally unstable and I find it incredibly difficult to accept and contemplate rejection. I recently went for a job interview, got turned down, I went home, played depressing music for a whole hour and spent the whole of the next day locked up in my room playing computer games, refusing to talk to anyone I didn't need to. It wasn't even like the rejection was a reflection on me - I could do the job easily, I had the time, I had shown my commitment, I handed in a good CV and I did a good interview - it was just circumstances beyond my control meant they couldn't offer me a job I have coping strategies when things get really bad though. One of those is writing. I can write and write for hours about my emotions and it doesn't trouble me. In fact, once I get started, it just flows naturally and I can start to slot everything into place. You seem to be a good writer, give it a try. It just removes all the bad energy, gets it off your chest. You feel like you've released it, but no one's been hurt because you just throw away the piece of paper and it's over. Another thing I have is music. If I start listening to sad and slow songs, then slowly pick up the tempo and mood, I lift myself out of it. I used to play drums and ironically I actually found that relaxed me too. I think maybe the sound of a constant, regular beat calms you down. Also, using anger constructively helps me. See the Brawl signature I have? I made it when I was feeling down. The feeling of creating that siggy, and giving it to other people to build up the Brawl Club's reputation was great. Really recreational. Other people like food, drawing, sports, exercise... you name it. Whatever suits you. When you get wound up, just do those things for a while, while you gather your thoughts, and then talk about it calmly with those you're wound up with. If you feel yourself getting out of control, walk away from the situation to calm down. Most importantly though, you need to get this into your head: Just because she doesn't want to spend time with you, doesn't mean that she wants to end the relationship. She needs space.
