I imagine they want to keep a hold on the title of "best free play game" in the world. It provides them some good, free publicity.

I can see this being moderately useful, here is one example: Training in stronghold of security I fish for food in the river Lum. This new item I could stuff 2 trouts in and at flesh crawlers (where I train) the extra 7 hp is actually pretty significant.
