Best Song Covers EVER!
Eh, that Disturbed video isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The solo wasn't on par with Kirk's playing ability - seemed like he was lagging behind. Definitely not a good cover, but definitely not the worst.

Detrimental Effects of Television
Yes, that's true. Sometimes things such as sound and sight can even add to your overall viewing experience instead of taking away from it too. I was never really trying to bash television - in fact, my first post on this thread was me listing the benefits of it. Right now I'm just saying things are generally more eloquent on paper than anywhere else (which evolved into a tv VS book argument). One of the main reasons I say this is because people can sound a lot smarter on the internet than they really are in real life. Another reason is because the few books that I did read were far more enlightening than the many many movies I've watched. It's simply a more pure form of communication. Let's face it. The majority is more interested in television than books at this day and age. Marketers use this to their advantage by making it a lot more entertainment-oriented than it is with books. Literature usually has stronger morals and don't have all the Hollywood fluff movies have that's only there in order for it to sell easier. Pretty girls, violence, and stuff like that are prime examples. Having a pretty girl for a character in a movie is almost mandatory now.

Detrimental Effects of Television
I hate books. I don't have to like them to know that they are more effective at getting points across than television though. Of course there are some exceptions - informative television is better at giving you the idea of what Africa looks like, what kind of spiders to stay away from, etc. But as for fictional stories, logical discussion, and the likes, literature takes the cake.

Detrimental Effects of Television
Not really. My point was more about how things are more eloquent in written form because then it's harder for the hectic everyday aspects of life to interfere. I don't recall mentioning anything about sensory input at all. This applies to movies because there is going to be more running through your head than if you were to just read a book. (His nose is big, this song reminds me of prom, she squeaks when she talks.) Not only that, but finding the remote and rewinding is a lot more work than skimming back a few sentences to reread, so it's easier to miss something in a movie than it is to miss something in a book. Basically what I'm arguing is that nothing can replace written discussion and be as effective. It might come close, but nothing will ever surpass it. How can something be more effective at getting a point across than raw discussion? Saying that television is exactly the same as books has to be one of the biggest stretches I ever heard. It is true. There are many great lyricists who express the fact that general and vague lyrics are so powerful because they're flexible and can be applied to anybody. With a movie, you're pretty much forced to think something looks/sounds/acts/feels a certain way. With a book you can personally fill in those gaps, which contributes towards a more emotional experience. PS: You do know what you're trying to defend, right?

No, that is a strawman. Care to tell me how it's a horrible analogy without one of your own?

Detrimental Effects of Television
That's true N0M, there are a lot of thought-invoking intelligent films out there. But something I realized is that things are just generally more eloquent in written form than when they're verbalized (unless of course there's music complementing them). Take these forums for example. There are some fairly intellectual discussions on here. Now imagine all the TIFers getting into one big room and trying to discuss things. There are gonna be more distractions and things will prevent us from communicating as eloquently as we do here on the forums. Our attention will be divided because there's a lot more going on than just a written discussion. (We'll be concerned about what others are wearing, how they sound like, what they're doing, etc.) Same with movies. You're focusing on sounds, images, and many other things - your attention will be divided, which can take away from the message of the film.

Final Fantasy Discussion thread
I had to purposely stop my chain when I was fighting Cuchalain. I think since that area is filled with mist, you don't run out (or you run out very slowly). I don't know, watching 20 consecutive Quickenings bores me.

Detrimental Effects of Television
Television sends vital information to masses of people which can really be helpful for avoiding dangerous weather, knowing what's going on with politics, discovering much needed products or services, being taught good morals, etc. It also gives you the feeling of company since you'll be hearing human voices. Unfortunately, television also breeds laziness. I remember when I did nothing but sit on the couch and watch tv all day. That's definitely not a good way to live your life... watching other people live their fake lives. I guess I kind of see television like I see drugs - they have extreme benefits but also extreme cons when they're abused.

Why is America cold?
I love the rain. Rain on a sunny day, yes. Rain in cold winds whilst doing a 20 min walk home... no thanks. Eh, it's still a life experience. I like the mood of those gray dreary days for some reason. It relaxes me.

Stuff you could NEVER get into
We have memes? :? Glass eating, Viking porn, Zombie invasions? Could be wrong Don't forget Lenin love. Nothing against Lenin - it's his fans that always have to kill the jokes, which gives me the feeling that he's probably the most annoyed by it out of all of us.

How many of you frequent some sort of *chan?
Yep, that's the one I'm talking about, but it evolved into a general death thread with lots of cars and guns. I was really sickened by the man who pushed another guy down onto the tracks of a subway, right when the train was about to come. It made me hungry for justice.

TIF memes. They're just a way of trying to tell ourselves that we're important and/or funny.
